My daughter, who has just turned three was given a trike for her trike has straps like reigns on the seat, you can't take them off,so i tell her that when she's riding it inside not to put the straps on in case she topples on it and gets stuck.
So this morning she topples sideways on it,doesnt hurt herself luckily so i say "darling don't strap yourself in incase you get stuck".
Well i may as well have been talking to myself coz she just went and did the exact same thing again
And my Eldest daughter who is Five is old enough to know that if you put your hand into a bunch of nettles that it will hurt,so what does she insist on doing every time!!
I think the wall would take more notice sometimes. rolleyes
Isn't it called learning by experience, Claire?
But I'm surprised your children already have the independance to think they know best ! I thought that only came with puberty? and if so, it seems you have a very interesting time ahead !
I know a good supplier of Grecian 2000, for when the time comes !!
Of course, it's an excellent way of getting sympathy and cuddles from mum, and as it happens, I've just burnt two fingers getting t-cakes out of the toaster. Do you have somewhere warm and soft I could put them while you give me a cuddle, to make it all better again?
I do love a sympathetic woman, boo-hoo, wahhhhhh.

Ours are exactly the same clare..................................
And i too have no idea where they get it from...............................milkman?? dunno
Someone once told me that when a child reaches 3 they recognise the word no but it takes until 7 to understand the true meaning. To me, that means I have to supervise my child at all times that she is in any situation that could be harmful for her even if I have told her the consequences. However, that someone could have told me a load of bollox but it gives me a damn good excuse to involve myself with her development.......and I get to play barbies redface
It doesn't mean that I wrap her in cotton wool but I keep a "Dads" eye on her when she is around me. Knocks and bumps tho are a good way for them to learn, so sometimes (if the harm would not be too great) I let her do it and after the shock and cry I can come out with the parents favourite saying "I told you so".

Ah, but you wait Clare, in a few years you'll call it subbourn-ness, and only a couple of years later they'll be telling you not to be so restricting, and you'll worry all over again as they use their independance to strike out into the big wide world, and fret over the men the might meet confused:
I believe the old adage is true: They break your arms when little, and your heart when grown! But it must be lovely in between times, to have CHILDREN.
The only life-experience I've missed, I think confused:

So right Keith, they grow up too bloody quickly though sad
As a 33 year old woman who has spent her entire life going round and round and round in circles, and only just realised why, making mistakes in life now feels like the best and most liberating experience ever.
If we don't learn a lesson the first time, it will come back again and again, and only until we change what we do in that experience will that be true learning.
My kids, now have soooo much freedom to make mistakes, to become who they were meant to become, no longer being moulded into what i think they should be. And when they do make a mistake, i now smile, offer a cuddle, even a shoulder to cry on, and just let them be. (Don't mistake this with pure lack of parental responsibility) I can't teach them there mistakes, only help in showing a path, or possiblity for future mistakes.
Wish i had the opportunity to rerun the last 13 and a half years. But hey, its the future that counts, not the past!!!!!
Lots of love, hugs and kisses

all kids are the same - i work at a school and as soon as you tell a child not to do something and turn around you can guarantee they will be doing it again, makes me realise my kids are normal too.

And when you despair at seeing your kids in ten years time, remember how our mothers would have despaired to see us all at the last Munch rolleyes redface

Actually, I think mine invented swinging, because she was always telling my dad how knackered SHE was, when he came home from work. Plus she was always inviting the baker, milkman, council workmen, in for tea and chat, but always made sure they'd gone for when I got home from school at lunchtime.
I never had to call them uncle though !!
Sorry mam, if your listening. Only a joke in these modern times of ours lol

You mean you've never invited her confused: confused: confused: wink
"You might turn your mothers hair grey, but one of us going to leave here, and it's not going to be me" Quote from my father, after they found me and g/f in bed. When I thought I was grown up, age 15 :!: :!:
"You might think you're God's gift, but this is the end as far as I'm concerned, and I'll see you on the street before before I let you sleep with me again" Quote from second wife after finding me in bed with chaimber-maid. Then I was grown up, age 43 :!: :!:
"You look and sound a t**t." Quote from an unsolicted SH e-mail, recieved a few days ago. Perhaps I've grown too old, age 55 :!: :!:
Do we ever really grow up to be different, or do we simply take our background and alter it slightly, to suit our needs? I know I'd love to have my parents DNA, to see if mine differs, with regards to sex drive! Somehow, I doubt it. What do you all think, more or less than your parents might have/had?
At least it might give all you young mums and dads some idea of what to expect in later life confused: lol lol
My lad has just turned 14, the zits have finally kicked in with avengance and the kevin and perry factor is now in full force with huge sighing sounds when I insist he does something, lots of stomping (thought they stopped years ago but are back) and a need to argue against everything, and I mean everything becuase if I ask if he wants something he wants he'll blody argue that its not in his interests to have it... shesh...
I now know what a bastard I was to my parents... and my mum finds this fact highly amusing confused I think shes thinking "arrr ha, revenge" lol
The only thing that works is to mention girls... he blushes and then shuts up for half an hour while walking arround with something held infront of his crotchto hide his embarisment rotflmao
God I think hes going to grow up worse than me... or a turn into a celibate monk rotflmao
My kids are so straight. I guess that's their rebellion. At 8 and 10 though, I spose there's a long way to go.
I have to admit that i find it harder now that my kids are at the age 5 and 7 then when they were babes!..
It might be that i am older and just don't have as much patients! ........................... but trying to teach them Independence is a bloody night mire! .......my 7 year old is worse then my 5 year old!
I have my 7 year old coming out with the ...you don't love me stage now!....................but i couldn't stop laughing the other day when she says to me......... mummy you don't love me because i am like a squashed fly..................... i mean what do you say to that one!.. dunno ......i was laughing so much that we were both in fits!

As I have learned from my two angels, they have the memory span of a nano second when it comes to life's lessons. (Thinks to herself HOW many times have I told them not to go near the road) or my personal favorite...when they ask me where a certain toy is and I tell them it's where you last left it. It leaves them baffled for hours!
Also, the upshot is, they get a huge cuddle from Mum when they hurt themselves and at the age your two are, a 'make-it-better' fussin is a very cool and comforting thing.
