erm have to say here as a bloke who went through both scouts and militry map reading ... you do need to turn the map coz it should allways face north:P the north arrows there for a reason ...to show u which way to point the map .. so tho it may look annoying and is a bit of a pain to turn it ..the ppl who turn it are reading it right , just coz leaving the map facing one way so we can read the road names is easier doesnt mean its right

But if you turn the map round then it won't face north . Unless you know where north is and have a compass, but even then it's easier to just follow road signs lol
(face it, using an A-Z on a wilderness trek is silly) rolleyes

Why can't they read the map the right way up (top of the page is North) so that when you need to make a left turn (ie to the East, remember we're going in a southerly direction), you look for a road on the map, as you're viewing the page, which goes off to the right? Simple, isn't it? You KNOW East is to the right of the page, so when you're travelling South, and you're viewing the map from the South looking North, as it were, you know that a left turn will ostensibly appear to be a right turn! dunno

But only when using MAG north - doesn't work if you want true north readings. :P
Guilty as charged when it comes to roads, though goodness knows why. Stick me in the middle of a field with a map and compass and I'll find my way easily enough. It was my best military subject (but I can shoot pretty good to....... lol)
Most people, wonem AND men, who get lost are most likely to get lost while travelling North to South, cos your going the "wrong way" on the map. In America you can buy road maps of the US which have North at the top and on the other side of the map they have South at the top, so whichever way to go, you can go the "right way" on the map!

Easy Slut that's a scandalous thing to say! I navigated my way oop north (well as far as the M6 but that's not the point) today, all on my own, without getting lost! I'm going to visit your truck and have words with you about this!
Just as soon as the AA route planner shows me the route to EasySlut's Layby.....they seem to be missing it at the moment
