I agree.... I have no problem's congratulating people on being so sad they have ridculously high post counts lol However, I only tend to reply to the 500, 1000 etc. And can I just add another sentence so this isn't a oneliner......... thankyou

One liners have their place.
I've seen some marvellous ones that punctuate a joke or deliberately entice replies. (See some of Sarge's posts)
Showing appreciation for anothers post using the smilies as well doesn't bother me either and I think that most people will do it at some time.
I also don't think that this light hearted banter is what people are commenting on.
I won't presume to speak for anyone else but the one's I don't like are the pointless ones, or the ones that turn into a personal flirtation session between 2 people. It's better in pm, and this style will normally kill the thread for others who may have wished to post.
They normally end up taking over several threads as the contributors follow one another around making a first reference to the topic and then devoting the rest of their one liners to "ooo you are naughty" " I know" "guess what" "what" "you're great" "so are you" "giggle"

Exactly so. Perhaps some of these threads which are considered to be within this category should be locked after they reach a certain point or number of posts?
Certainly there are one or two still being bumped up for no apparent reason other than to proove a point about making one liners rolleyes

I am sorry for what i am about to say folks. It isnt't offensive (it may sound like a stupid question which may have already been covered!) But.......
What happens when people post on the forum and they are new?
Do I just ignore it? (Cos i usually try and write a line or two saying hello).
Or
Do i write a paragraph giving them advice and the rest?
The reason i am saying this is because since I have been here there have been a lot of new people putting up posts saying hello i am new (this is just my opinion).
Whatever is decided i will abide by.
The last thing i wanna be doing is rubbing people up the wrong way.

On the contrary, new members are always welcome and replies to their joining posts will help them feel so.
What this thread is about is when members make loads of posts, about really nothing of any substance, merely to gain higher post counts.
If you have a look through some of the most recent posts over the last week or two, you will be hard pushed to find anything actually worth reading, which isn't either a back slapping congratulatory post or "look at me" type thing.
These sort of posts probably don't make a new member feel he/she would be welcome to join in with a thread because often they consist of only one or two members posting on it as if it's their's alone.
We don't want rocket science or the origins of man discussed in depth, but a little more substance to certain posting formats would not go amiss.
We are all guilty of one liners from time to time, but when someone's total post count consists of very little more than one liners, I feel it's time they took a look at their style and maybe review it a little.

So is this thread which has complained about people doing one line posts and replies, and emote replies simply going to turn into a mockery of itself? Seems somewhat hypocritical to me.
Ok Sarge and Folks.
I will try my best and adhere to what u have said!
Stupid question here sarge.......
But can u get the Phil Silvers show on dvd or tape?

I think new people to hear can take their lead from whats around them - you'll soon pick up on both the madcap humour and the quality debates and you'll have your own slant on them and can join in accordingly.
I admit to constantly putting one liners up but I hope they are mostly funny or relevent and invite someone else to pick up the ball so to speak.
I will also give threads a boost when I like the person - it may be out of affection even.
And a friendship can develop from one playful or thoughtful comment on never know which one it will hour is can build on that, the personal development of a connection made on the Forum.
Its rare I read a thread where I don't read SOMETHING amusing or worthwhile, don't learn ANYTHING from it.
I have to be free,to trust my momentery we turn into a bunch of grumpy navel gazers with our arms folded whats the point?
By the way - I posted a heartfelt, serious, long piece on Fabio's "Another Question for the Swinging Heaven masses" thread, one which featured many deep, thoughtful contributions.
By chance it got sandwiched between pictures of blowjobs etc from Satins person commented on my post to me out of the whole board.A post that was a gamble on my part - attention seeking, self pitying but brutally honest was noticed by one kind of prooved the point I was making - no,I wasn't against the party pics - I think its wonderful what they do there - and who can blame them being euphoric over it,I would be if I'd shagged half of Swinging Heaven while wearing stockings and suspenders!I'm just saying sometimes you can do something thats like a piece of your soul on here and nobody cares less - it means nothing to them - Vienna!
Fluck it- what does any of it mean Amigos?! wink
I remember this exact same conversation happening shortly after I joined and I'm sure we've had it since ...
The problem with discussion forums is that by their nature they are circular ... regulars leave all the time and new pnes join all the time and so the conversations aren't particularly consistent.
For a while we had it sorted and then it's slid back a few steps, a thread like this happens and everyone picks up a bit and then it will slide back a few steps ... Problems occur when people take it personally and then back off (will admit to having been guilty of this shortly after joining and this happened).
I have a high post count .... why? I'm used to chatting on mirc and I find the chatroom here isn't an appropriate place (more of a arranging meets / pick up place) so I use the forum. Redhot once commented one a different thread that the forum is used more and more like a chatroom (albeit a static one) and I will admit to having used the place for that reason.
There aren't many conversations that haven't happened before and someone moans about that, one liners someone else moans, individual conversing together someone else moans ... it's the nature of the board and I personally think that as long as reminders are worded well and reasonably regular to remind others about their "posting style" then everyone is generally happy.

I knew that, but it didn't stop me from making a little private toast in your direction - even if you did start the most controversial thread in history

Cheers Mark   - ermm....I started the thread but not the controversy. You (certain admin people) started it, no, not by invading Poland, but thanks to some people here, the word "verification" might remain a dirty word for some time to come...but to use the current psychobabble, it's time for closure and moving on lol

I just feel that perhaps the climate here isn't what I'm looking for.
Well I didn't realise I was opening a can of worms here, but having read and re-read all the replies it seems to me that most people agree on what is acceptable and that there are slight differences of opinion on what is irritating.
I have no problems with one liners (god knows I post enough of them!!) so long as they make a point, or are funny or ask a relevant question. I have no problem with hijacking a thread (god knows I have hijacked enough of them!!) so long as it is done in the right spirit of the site and that we are sensitive enough to realise whether it is appropriate for that thread. I have no problem with posting a line of emoticons (god knows I have posted enough of them!!) again where it is appropriate to do so, but it should all be in moderation. Too much of any of the above does become irritating.

the one's I don't like are the pointless ones, or the ones that turn into a personal flirtation session between 2 people. It's better in pm, and this style will normally kill the thread for others who may have wished to post.

I couldn’t agree more, though even these kinds of postings are OK in moderation. It just winds me up when a thread has 5 or 6 replies to it and then 2 or 3 people make 20 posts which are in fact just a conversation between themselves or, dare I say it, a chat!! (Now where would be the best place for that??)
The strength of the Café is the fact that most people are here to have a laugh and I would never want that to change. I love the banter, the advice, the serious topics and the friendship I find here. We are not all going to agree on everything, all of the time but the style of the café is self-policing so it is only right that we should air our views when standards are slipping.
Personally I miss the threads that are interactive stories where anyone can jump in and become part of the story.
Anyway, back to the purpose of this thread. It seems that we all agree that we don’t want celebration threads for insignificant post counts. The general consensus of opinion seems to be that 500, 1000 and every thousand afterwards are the best times to celebrate all that is good here and who am I to argue with that??

Don't sweat it baby .... you have to appreciate that some people are full post count posters and some are one liners ... and most are in between but occasionally one set of posters is more prolific and can drown the boards a tad ....
What people are saying is that whilst a set of posters may be one or another (one liners or full word count) there has to be a happy medium .... everyone has their own style but sometimes you need to reassess and rope it in a bit.
Christ if one liner posts were out the SH clock would have died a long time ago, the hangman thread would never have rolled on etc etc ...
No one is suggesting that the place should change it's just a timely reminder for people to not drown the boards incesssantly and the flirting and some conversations could be taken to pm or msn.
Don't take offence because I can't see one post that has particularly identified unwelcome posts ... just asked for some to have some thought kiss
