Folks,
I have decided that I can't even put the kettle on these days without something going wrong (actually - I can't - becuse the kettle has just blown sad )
Installed an ethernet card last night so that I can network my ancient old work laptop to my PC. Everything went swimingly and my PC can see my laptop and my laptop can see my PC. Woo hoo!!
BUT, ever since I did this I can't access any ftp sites on my PC? Fine before I played with the network stuff. Not working afterwards. dunno
Anyone ever come across this before? Can anyone hazard a guess?
For info - I access ftp via internet explorer. I don't use any ftp client software. I am not getting any error messages other than a "time out" on any ftp site (and yes I have had others check to see that they can access my ftp sites okay - and they can)
Unfortunately, accessing my ftp site is vital for my working from home - so if I can't sort it I'll have to go into the office   .

Which pc has the internet connection? Does this one connect to ftp sites?

The PC has the internet connection, not the laptop. This one DID connect to FTP sites fine, but can't anymore. confused And as you can see - I am having no probs connecting to any websites.
My internet connection is NTL broadband via USB port (if that makes any difference!
Ditch the USB connection and use a straight ethernet cable to the modem, then get a router so that you can share the connection without having your main system on.
Ethernet connections to broadband modems tend to be more reliable, as they don't require any drivers. You'll also have the advantage of a hardware firewall running on the router.
Must agree with Flapjackboy
We did almost exactly what you've done and our MSN/Mirc refused to work, installed it all through a Router and all of our services work fine now.

I will agree too I had all sorts of trouble with my network till i bought a router. Now all my troubles have gone and I can sit on the sofa surf the net and my laptop keeps me warm.
steggers, XX
Thanks flapjack boy and Calista!! Will certainly try that kiss
Hi rainbow
From what you've said I presume you're using the ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) feature in Windows.
If you are, you will have to go into the Advanced settings and enable the FTP Server service (or Port 21 if we want to get technical). By default, this is not enabled.
You can also add custom ports if needed to access other applications. Any problems, drop me a PM
And I would agree with previous comments, go and buy a DSL router or ADSL modem/router. IMHO, USB modems are a liability!
If you are using a proxy server make sure it is set correctly. For IE some require port 21 others require port 80 (or the proxy equivilent 4480, 8080 etc).
Dont you just sometimes wish that all you had to do is get them out of the box and plug them in, with no hassle.
