Think we are all missing the point of the long sentences.
Been so used to the courts handing out poor sentences, that now someone has realised that we need long jail terms not short that the long terms being handed down seem out of kilter.
It is known that the longer the sentence the less likely the offender is to re-offend.
And while they are locked they cant commit any crimes.

I am fortunate in that I live in a quite country area of France well away from these goings on but when I watch riots in Paris and the South of France on French TV, the CRS (French riot Police) and Gendarme go in very hard and quell the violence quickly. There are usually many casualties (not in the Police ranks) and those that die on the mobster side are quickly forgotten. Those that survive are often quietly and speedily deported back to where they came from. If they don't love France, they have no right to be here.
All the main routes in to Paris are reinforced concrete so that, if necessary, tanks can deployed to quell any unrest. The UK's road are a mess with unfilled potholes meaning that anything larger than pedal cycle (even they are vulnerable!) stands no chance of getting through. Little wonder that the Police - who do a marvellous job and should be credited for doing so - are so stretched.

One of my pet hates is the variable speed limits on the 2am they are flashing 40mph and no reason for at 7am it says 50 and we sit still for long periods.

There was a case in London when the police persued a thief onto a roof and one of the constables fell through said roof and the Chief Constable was prosecuted under health and safety ....Now they are not allowed to chase them incase the same happens again.
