I'm a trained Lifeguard, but even I couldn't say how I would have reacted in the circumstances, as I wasn't there. Obviously we would all like to do what ever we can to help others, but it does seem that in this instance, that the situation was dealt with in the safest possible way.
The one thing I do know is how dangerous ANY open water is, not just the sea, and that it should be treated with a great deal of respect and caution.

Even trained Lifeguards holding the RLSS NPLQ are not trained to effect a rescue in open water. The necessary qualification is the RLSS Bronze Medallion which is lifesaving - completely different to lifeguarding which is relevant only to swimming pools.

burning houses are much more dangerous, but you often hear of brave neighbours going in to rescue poeple trapped. its not down to what your paid or knew where the boy was last seen. i would have had a go.
no question

Yes, and you often hear of brave neighbours dying in their attempts!
I'm happy that you feel you would have gone it - and I'm happy that the others chose not to go in. Each to their own and each to their own families. If you have no family to leave behind to mourn your rash actions then that's fine and dandy.
Strangely enough I was very touched to see one of the big blokes on DIY SOS ( redface ) last night talking about how he just realised what his selfish act of smoking could do to his young family (and he used the word 'selfish') - his actions impacted adversely on his children and could lead to his death.

Drowned attempting to rescue a man and each other from the sea

Open water is dangerous and no rescue should be attempted by those untrained in specialist skills. These three police officers above all drowned because the man concerned went into the water to rescue his dog. FOUR people dead and one bedraggled but alive dog!
~It's clear enough - you can't advertise AS a TV (etc) or FOR a TV (etc) except in the TV (etc) category. And spamming the site with ads in multiple categories is also against the site AUP.
The AUP can be found at the bottom of each screen or by clicking here
http://www.swingingheaven.co.uk/main/aup.html
As Dawnie said - put in a support ticket if you feel the need! The HELP pages are also very clear:

Perhaps your ad was in the incorrect category? If you've only had your ad deleted and not been banned, think yourself lucky. It wastes a great deal of our time moving/deleting ads that are NOT in the correct categories. If you discover your ad has been deleted, make sure when you place another one that you put it in the correct category.
Perhaps you had more than one ad in the same category? If this was the case, please make sure you simply modify and update ONE per category, as per the guidelines.
I'm afraid we can't recover deleted ads. Just get on and post another, paying particular attention to all the rules and category choice, or you may find yourself with all your ads deleted and yourself banned the next time.

But there are two blokes in your avatar Jags. One is kneels before you with two hands cleary visible. Who's is the third hand that is creeping up the bottom of your leg there?

He's the one I rejected as being inferior for the purpose and he's raising his hand in supplication!
kiss
So your that one solatery hand isn't really supporting the suggestion that you are indeed standing (with high heels on obviously) on a carpet of men, whilst allowing a select few to work their way up your body one at a time. The third hand we can see is actually just second in line of another half a dozen more pairs waiting their turn.
You know me so well Matt - it's scary!! A carpet of men over whom I walk is a very tempting and exciting thought (only you could conjure it up) but it's the queue for my favours which is displayed. You, of course, are in the lead queue!
x xx
Well - I've obviously wasted four years of my life on nothing. No people, no fun, no meetings, no fab and interesting encounters - I must have imagined it all.

I very briefly considered trying to register for a ticket to this, but to be honest no band (not even Led Zep) is worth £125 a ticket, even for a one-off performance.
I'll probably spend the evening at home with a couple of good bootlegs, that way I'm guaranteed a great concert.

Good bootlegs? Bring them round!!

As to the conspiracy theory, I was seriously wondering if some long term posters can post certain things purely because they have been around for a while. There are loads of situations in life where it would be inappropriate for a newcomer to say something that an established member of a group could say without fear of of being put down.
I have loads of conspiracy theories for anyone that wants to hear !!! lol

The thread was left to roll as everyone has the right to post a question. It matters NOT ONE JOT to me whether it's an established member or a newbie and I could easily take offence at the insinuation! It's transparent why the thread got locked. People didn't like the idea and it was about to get nasty - one more alcohol fuelled night and there would be one TTTT who would have triggered off a nightmare.
Now.. can I lock THIS thread or will there be a great big hissy fit from some people??? Hissy fit PMs to the usual address.....not that that would be a change.
:P
Some people can spot a conspiracy without even trying!
I locked it cos there was not a point to the thread - and it was in danger of becoming nasty. Why I didn't lock the other one... simple.. I wasn't around at the time and didn't see it.
Now roll up your theories and put them away for the next time!
:P

Why has my post/thread been locked/deleted!?
Firstly, please carefully read our Forum Posting Guidelines to gain some insight as to why this may have happened. Also, refamiliarize yourself with the forum registration terms you agreed to, paying particular attention to this section: You agree that the webmaster, administrator and moderators of this forum have the right to remove, edit, move or close any topic at any time should they see fit.
Usually when a post is locked the reason is given by the Moderator who locked it. If your post/thread was deleted then it was most likely considered so pointless or such an infringement of the AUP that it should no longer remain on the site.
The possible reasons your post/thread was locked or deleted are too numerous to mention here, so we simply ask you to accept the decision and move on. What we certainly do NOT want to see is yet another post asking why your previous one was locked or deleted.
If you think your rights as a forum member have been abused and you want to have the matter looked into, please see our abuse page and send us as much information as possible, including your forum username and the link to, or content of, the post in question.

The EU's deadline of December 31st, 2009 to enforce metric only labels and ban any supplementary indicators (Imperial measurements) on goods after the deadline has been abolished. On May 9th, 2007 the European Commission agreed to allow supplementary indications alongside the statutory metric indications beyond 2009.
The United Kingdom completed its legal transition to SI units in 1995, but a few such units are still in official use: draught beer must still be sold in pints, roadsign distances must be in yards and miles, and speed limits are in miles per hour, therefore interfaces in cars must be capable of displaying miles per hour. Even though the troy pound was outlawed in Great Britain in the Weights and Measures Act of 1878, the troy ounce still may be used for the weight of precious stones and metals. The railways are also a big user of imperial units, with distances officially measured in miles and yards or miles and chains, and also feet and inches, and speeds are in miles per hour, although many modern metro and tram systems are entirely metric, and London Underground uses both metric (for distances) and Imperial (for speeds). Metric is also used for the Channel Tunnel, and also the Channel Tunnel Rail Link high speed line, Adjacent to Ashford International railway station and Dollands Moor International Freight Terminal, speeds are given in both Metric and Imperial units.
The use of SI units is mandated by law for the retail sale of food and other commodities, but most British people still use Imperial units in colloquial discussion of distance (miles) and speed (miles per hour). Milk is available in both litre and pint containers, with appropriate conversions as well. Many people still measure their weight in stones and pounds, and height in feet and inches — but these must be converted to metric if recorded officially, for example on passports. For example petrol is sometimes quoted as being so much per gallon, despite having been sold exclusively in litres for two decades. Likewise, fuel consumption for cars is still usually in miles per gallon, though official figures always include litre per 100 km equivalents. Fahrenheit equivalents are sometimes given after Celsius in weather forecasts, especially for high temperatures (e.g. temperatures will reach as high as 90 degrees tomorrow).
