I think you'll find it's par for the course with contacts from adverts. At least they had the decency to let you know they could not make it and it may have been genuine in this case and maybe they will re-schedule.
Best way to meet people is here on the forum and then get to some of the small socials, parties and munches. It all takes time so chill out and before long opportunities will present themselves.

Confirmations required!
If you are already on the list (check this thread or PM me) could you please confirm you are able to attend the mini-munch on the 23rd April in Leicester.
Invitations will be sent out in a couple of weeks. If you don't confirm you will not be sent an invite.
Details of the venue location will be sent out a few days before the event, along with a map and details of parking.
There are now over 50 people on the list. Still room for a few more, but only regular SH users please. If you require a list of guests or hotels please let me know and I will send them to you.

The comma or a full stop (or an exclamation mark. Thanks Fabio) are interchangeable in this sentance, but you should never have a comma and "and" next to each other.
That's the way I was taught anyway.

Like he says, the comma before the 'and' is unnecessary or superfluous as the 'and' acts as a sort of punctuation in itself. That's the way I think about it when I'm writing and I often mentally read back to myself what I have written, imagining how my sentences sound as if the were spoken.
You can punctuate with a comma before 'but' though, as in, "I went to the shops, but found they were closed".

It would appear that you both have already had a look around. The way to get to meet people is to join in with the banter on the forums and let us get to know you. Somewhere along the line you'll be able to get an invite to the munches where you can meet others from this site in a purely vanilla social setting. It's a great way to meet people without any pressure.

I think it's down to newbies copying what other newbies have done and it's no bad thing IMO. At least it shows they are reading the forums and seeing how they may make a start here. The best newbie intro posts are those that make an effort to tell us about themselves with a well written or thought out post, not just a few lines which says little. It's not mandatory to do a intro post, though it does help. In the long run joining in with the banter is the best approach to putting across personality and is the best way to get known.

What a cracking night out! Don't think Peterblurugh knew what hit it last night when the SH crew descended upon it. There were a lot of stares and fingers pointing at all the flirting and naughty behaviour of our party and confusion amongst many of the young regulars in the bar as to whom was with whom. :shock: They must have been wondering what the hell we were on, as SH regulars abandoned themselves to utterly outrageous behaviour in full public view. :twisted: It was a hell of a lot of fun and I thoroughly enjoyed myself!
Many thanks to Roger and Helen for organizing this and to Kristof for getting us there and back. wink

Hopefully there'll be another one sometime....if they let us back in! :twisted:

It does seem like a chicken and egg thing ..
I have been told if people can say they have met me i get on a short list for 1 munch.
This makes me feel as tho I've got to arrange a meet with a stranger just to get to meet people in a group ( which for a newbie i feel is far safer)
I have found most on here to be friendly but if i got to arrange a meet with someone to get into a munch it will just be my luck to pick a srew ball .
I dont know what else newbies can do .. i come on the forum most days and leave the odd post.
Have chatted to 1 or 2 on the phone ..looks like ive gotta go and shag them soon if i want to go to a munch!
You don't have to meet a stranger or shag them to get to go to a munch. What most munch organizers will want to see is that you have joined in on the forums or chatroom for some time, so that people have got to know you and you them. This ensues that when you do go to a munch you will know who people are and will find it easier to join in and get to meet people. This is a mini-munch mainly for people who have met before and know one another. The mini-munches are becomming popular amongst more established members for this reason, that they can relax and enjoy themselves in company they already know. There are larger munches which can accomodate a larger number of newbies which are always welcome, but still you will find that you have to be an active member of the site to get an invite. There are also plenty of other things being orgaized on SH, such as small socials, parties and visits to clubs, so no shortage of opportunities to meet people. Have patience and show a commitment to the site and you will be invited to go to munches.
