Interesting question re Sheene and Rossi. It's a shame we'll never see them race because that would have been special.
Sheene faced an entirely different set of challenges to Rossi. Till he arrived on the scene, bike racing was the preserve of the wealthy. He was a cheeky working class boy who grabbed it by the scruff of the neck and changed racing both on and off the track forever, and he was a hero.
He rode evil-handling 500cc two-strokes with a powerband as wide as a fag paper and inadequate brakes. He had some horrendous crashes and, on at least one occasion, hobbled to his bike on crutches and rode injured. He was a racer, he was willing to take it closer to the edge than his rivals and he had that drive to win that all champions have.
I don't think I've ever seen Rossi crash in a race, though. He was on the podium for every race of last season, despite some horrendous qualifying results, awful starts and on 1 occasion getting a 10 sec stop and go penalty and racing through the pack for the second time. At the start of this season, he moved to Yamaha, took a bike that achieved very little last year and won first time out.
But the the bikes are completely different now. Today's roadbikes outperform the GP bikes Sheene rode, and riding techniques for extracting the available performance have changed. But I bet if Barry was racing now, he and Rossi would give us a real show.
Shameless plug for bike racing - Warwick is right, Gibernau is having a great season and is 5 points ahead of Rossi. Assen GP this weekend. It will be good.
I'll stop waffling now ....
