Don't be threatened by other people, lawyers seem scary to people that don't know them but get your own and you will see that it isn't as bad as you thought.
I do agree with Steve about the legal aid thing and believe me, it's not the person that drags it out, it's the lawyer. They are hoping to make the best money possible from the situation.
However, any lawyer worth their salt will encourage you to try mediation first.
