Grrrrr. Anyone who can tell me why my DECT phones are buggering about- no ringtone, just a "noise" will be worshipped.
I've checked the ADSL filters, to no avail.

Hi smile...
If this was my prob I would remove everything and experiment :) .....all filters and phones the lot....then try a phone in every point (not the dect one -an ordinary that you know works :) ) without filters to confirm your phone points are ok....then add all your filters and go round and repeat....to verify filters all workin.....this will be some really silly fault when you discover it.....there seem to be issues with bt homehub doin this but thats down to bt....and you need to see them if you are havin probs with that....
Feel free to chip in anyone if you have a better idea than me :)....

can anyone tell me why all of a sudden a photo will have coloured pixelation all over it then they can just go? they always start at the bottom of the photo and stop showing some of the photo at the top. it's done it quite a few times now.
it has done it to a photo that i have on my own site. i had sent said photo to dawnie and it was fine. went to send it to someone else and it has the pixilation. i had thought that as it's not part of the original photo that it wouldn't show if i put it in the pm but it does.
whips

Hi smile ...
It sounds like the problem could be an internet one....sometimes file transfer can cause this due to pic not bein sent correctly and random data bein lost....try emailin pics in future and on your site just keep updatin the pic....also the size of the pic counts if it has been altered apparently (just read that on the interweb).....if you are usin dreamweaver for your site for example then make sure the photo in the parent directory (the site stored on your pc) is ok....hope this helps....not really my field....
Maybe someone else could chip in here :)

Ok Gary got one for you............every now and again my pc just switches itself off lol any ideas ?
Mine does that as well.... confused :?
Hi both smile....
Ok this can be caused by over heatin....which can be caused by the heatsink on the cpu bein full of dust....a screwdriver and a can of spray air are needed to cure this....always shut pc down before takin side off....switch off power at the wall but leave plugged in (helps to earth chassis)....DO not touch anything inside but carefully spray heatsink fins to clean them out....this is the easiest cause of shutdowns to cure....other reasons can be faulty memory sticks and voltage spikes from your home mains supply....fridges can cause this :)....Another reason for random shut downs can be a on-its-way-out power supply.....these are fitted inside the tower and can be replaced when total failure occurs for 20-30 quid :)....

plus I compress all the files in my C drive to give me some breathing space (30gig was down to 1.2 free, now has 17 free) the vaio has two drives, I've moved all documents to the D drive which is a lot bigger and is 70% empty. I have quite a few large programs which are on the C drive and it wont let me move them. (Photoshop, Quark, Dreamweaver, Reason, Fruitloops plus umpteen (love that word) others)
H.x

Hi.... smile
Sounds like you have already had some good advice from this thread.....glad people are takin an interest.....you have done lots of the obvious etc.....I was always under the impression that compressin files was a bit of a stopgap that never really works cos the process itself (compress and decompress) tends to slow down the pc considerably.....a good rule of thumb is to never fill a c:drive over the 75% mark.....a good idea if you have 2 partitions is to store created files photos web pages etc on another drive.....programs will install by default on to your c:drive but could also be installed on another partition/drive.....you can't move a program that has been installed so best just reinstall on another partition/drive.....runnin as few programs as possible simultaneously is best as well obviously.....if all this fails to help.....then try runnin "window washer" a very useful prog on a pc with a small hard drive.....or bite the bullet and use the dreaded restore discs.....nothin speeds a pc up more than restoring it.....maybe get an external drive as well these have come down in price and could be added to your home network.....good luck :)

Gary, any idea why my computer keeps telling me Ive run out of memory.... I may only have two web pages open and I get a warning pop up! Thanks in advance... smile

Hi....:)
This can be caused by a few things.....you could need to upgrade the amount of physical ram on your pc it always makes an enormous differance to strugglin pcs......but first try this that i have blatantly pinched off another site....this checks to make sure your virtual memory is set as it should be....
# Click Start, then open the Control Panel.
# Click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System.
# Click the Advanced tab.
# Under Performance, click Settings.
# Click the Advanced tab.
# Under Virtual memory, click Change.
# Under Drive , click the drive that contains the paging file (virtual memory) settings that you want to change. In almost every case, this will be your C: drive.
# Click to select the "System managed size" option, then click Set.
# Click OK three times and restart your computer.
Also sometimes just rebootin cures your virtual memory probs....
check that your hard drive is no more than 75% full as well :)...

ok... got my wireless back now... Archers and everything.
So Rubber Duckie is now fully wireless again also... though reception and attitude can vary, and indeed become rather startling now!
There he was... in the deep-end of the bath... pootling and paddling quite nicely to the strains of something freeform and relaxed... a crackle and a hiss... all of a sudden I have an axe-wielding topper-wearing duckie, in a style of drug crazed Slash...
not nice near toes, knee caps... or nadgers...
the technical world is fraught with danger.
"hello, Injury-Lawyers are Us?... yes, I've had dealings with Techical Corner, and I was wondering if you could....."

Official response from Technical corner.....I think you have mixed up this thread with the...."I think I need therapy and I think I need it now thread".....smile ....

Here's a puzzle Gary...
my laptop has stopped making any noises - why?
I can't get sound from audio or film files, can't get sound if I play a dvd on it etc etc
Oh and yes, I have already checked and my sound isn't on mute... honest!
Help! I was babysitting last night and a very important game of paintpot pickup on CBeebies website just wasn't the same without the sound effects... at least not according to my nephew (I quite enjoyed it!)
Help!

Hi smile.....
I would try goin into control panel and checkin to make sure your audio drivers are still selected and workin....Are you on XP or Vista??.....on XP goto "sounds and audio devices" in control panel....then click on the audio tab.....and make sure there is a sound card selected in "sound playback" default device section.....you can also double click on the volume control in the bottom right hand corner of your screen to check your settings.....
In Vista goto control panel and the "hardware and sound" section. In there you can check your audio settings....
Also if it is just sound from web sites that isnt workin try installin firefox and usin that instead of internet explorer as it is far faster and more reliable.....
These sort of probs are hard to fix without havin the machine in front of you but if that still dont sort it post again with your make and model of lappie....
Cheers Gary xxx

Hi Gary,
I have msn and I used to keep history, I dont now. But it still saves it in my recieved files, which I have to delete via recycle bin.
My son was on the pc one day and I went into his recieved files and all my msn history was in there, yet he signs onto the pc under a different user name.
How can i stop my msn history being logged onto files?

Hi smile .....
Have looked into this and I know nothin is saved on my laptop when I log out of msn.....In msn goto "tools-options-messages".....make sure both message history boxes are not checked.....This should ensure nothin is saved.....Now if this fails to do as it should I would be tempted to uninstall messenger and download the latest version and put it in.....then first make sure those settings are not checked the first time you use it.....everytime you log off check to make sure they are doin as they should....msn does do some weird things sometimes.....basically on a shared comp its always best to check your history has gone.....try getting a prog called "window washer" that gets rid of all sorts......
Cheers Gary xxx
Hi Random....

can i have the idiots guide to photoshop or at very least idiots guide to extracting the image from the background i got as far as doing the red and blue dogs then got lost

You could have a look at the 'for dummies' range of books, my library has a wide selection so you shouldn't have to buy it. Easiest way to take something out of the background is with the magic wand tool, or loso it but that takes a steady hand. If you copy a section and past it onto a new layer you can fidle with it without it effecting the background. Only way to get the hang of it really is practice.
Any ideas of what to do with a wireless keyboard that my adorable rolleyes cat spilt a cup of coffee over?
H.x
Hi H-x ......Regarding the wireless keyboard....personally i would strip it down and see whats what....but if you dont fancy that....apparently popping water damaged items in a bag with lots of dry rice and putting in airing cupboard for a few days works wonders....good for mobiles and ipods etc so they say....never tried it myself smile....take batts out obviously....if that fails sell cat and buy another keyboard (kiddin).....:).....post it to me lol.....
Gary xxx
Dummies guide books are great....very user friendly....
Hi Fanny smile.....Adobe Photoshop is the most advanced and clever photo editing software available....sadly it is also the most complicated....thats why people goto college to learn how to use it....Have you tried photoshop elements this is the home user version and much easier to get on with on....apparently....also try my favourite paint shop pro....which was always easier to use....not done any photo editing for a couple of years much to the relief of people i work with.....did some great ones for work droppin peoples faces onto all sorts lol lol lol....anyway if you still want to persevere with photoshop try the link below.....

Gary xxx
Wish i still had that one where i dropped 2 of the guys faces onto a couple of shemales lol....

i was ok ish about my age .... until garys daughter asked me how OLD i am !!!
i am older than him and really feel it now

You are not old !!! You are a wonderful carin lover smile...
We love "cop shows" we're currently watching Lewis which is very good....Also rewatching Life on Mars which is just simply fantastic....Its serious one minute and then hilarious the next...and the music is great to....Gene Hunt what a hero !! ....Not forgetting Prime suspect and Cracker....
I think lots of the US shows are good to very well made....My favourites are and were NYPD blue, CSI, Bones and not forgetting the amazing 24.......
The country we live in has gone mad.....We pay so much of our wages to mr tax man and then he taxes us on everything except the air we breathe (so far anyway).....and now if I look out and see someone stealing our car (which is taxed every which way).....I can ring the police and expect a rapid response....unless there is a puppet to investigate and in that case tough luck......
As was said earlier in the thread it was such a tame reference to a gypsy life style of days gone by......saw the clip on the news....the mind boggles that some people have so much time on their hands.....I am thinking of complaining to the police the next time a programme made in the US refers to british people and shows a red bus, a beefeater and tower bridge......thats blatant stereotyping smile :) ...........ok rant over :) :)

You are right Geordie its not always the ISP thats to blame.....In our case tho we were gettin regular dis connections at random times.....nothin to do with our laptops....have set up and fixed quite a few wireless networks as well and the switch it all off and start again advice is quite useful sometimes....modems are best switched on b4 routers to enable correct ip address retreval....How come it takes you 5-10 mins to get on with your antivirus.......I use avg free anti virus and spyware doctor and get straight on....Anyway thats gettin away from the point.....Moral is Virgin still havin probs but then again have heard much worse things about other suppliers and seein as we only pay £10 a month am goin to stop moanin smile xxxxGary xxxx

Ok in regard to the above mumbo jumbo........have been on virgin/ntl for several years for their broadband and only last night had any problem whatsoever......as someone on a tight budget they have always been reliable and never once moaned about me downloadin loads of films/apps etc......even on their 2 meg service I get very very high transfer rates and for 10 quid a month thats brill......as regards internet thru usb.....using usb to connect to your modem uses system resources and slows pc down if you are doin several things at once.......fit a network card and you are far better off ......ok cant believe I am defending virgin but thats my experience any way smile
