how do i "unthrottle" my tinterweb connection when downloading from torrent sites etc. I believe it is only "peak time" but this appears to be whenever im out of bed !!!! confused

Hi.....
Why are you throttled anyway??? The only reason an i.s.p throttles people is when that person has exceeded there allotted monthly usage....if you are bein throttled and aren't gettin your correct speed then it's time to change i.s.p........But if you mean is there anyway you can increase how many pcs you are connected to when using progs such as bitcomet then there is....

Hello Gary, if you have time could you possibly advise on this, please - my elderly uncle has just bought his first computer, a reconditioned lap-top for
Within days of using it, the anti-virus software (Blackice) stopped working and now the computer has ground to a halt.
My knowledge on computer stuff is zero, but a computer shop near us has quoted to clean it and put new anti-virus software on there.
I feel quite responsible as it's me who's been telling him to get one for ages, and now he's down and no computer, and even more scared of them than he was before.
What would you do in this situation? Is it worth paying to get it fixed?
Can you give any advice without knowing the specs?
(I don't know the specs, and getting him to discuss it is very hard!)
Any advice gratefully received
Cherry x

Hi smile....
First off did the place where he bought it from not give him any sort of warranty??? they should even with recon stuff....not a very good advert for them....you say it has ground to a halt.....if it is completely dead then it is more than a software prob....but if you get error messages and nothing else it could well be.....if i had it i would wipe and put new software on it.....if you live anywhere near me....pass it on and will do it for him....as long as there is some life in the thing there is no reason why windows me or even xp wont work on it....however slow....would be ok for the net and basic stuff....have done a load of old pcs for folks who just want to browse the net or type letters and things....or even just get the hang of things before diving in and buying a new puter....but if you can get it to me i would have a look for him :)

Erm don't know if you have already got your new laptop but I would steer well clear.....you would soon end up paying for it....nothing in this life is free but just their to make you tempted to plum for a more expensive option.....with decent lappies available from a certain supermarket for as little as £329 I would get one of those instead and pocket the clubcard points as well....lots of freebies are not freebies at all.....have been lookin for new mobile deals for me and better half recently.....we were tempted by the phonesforyou offers of free wiis and such stuff until you read the small print and realise you dont even get a brand new phone....they are old phones repaired or repackaged and called clearance phones.....bloody con....ok rant over smile

In the past few days there have been periods when I cannot access websites at all, or only some, even though I am connected to the internet (broadband connection). I did a diagnostic test which told me that it could not detect a network card (which seems also to be called a network adaptor). Then for a while everything is okay again.
What is a network card? Is mine packing up? Does it usually go gradually like this? What do I do? I would be grateful for some advice.

Hi smile....
Sorry about the slow response I cant always get on here....got loads on at the mo....anyway....
The network card is actually an ethernet card and this is where your broadband is plugged into the pc i am guessing....first thing i would do is look in device manager and see if the ethernet card is working properly.....sometimes the dreaded automatic windy updates install a newer driver and make things worse rather than better....make sure the device is working ok and click to update driver....if you find it is problematic new network cards are only about £6 from pc shops....hard to diagnose exactly from your post so feel free tp post a more detailed account :)

Make sure you know what the programs are before disabling them of course confused

Hi smile.... goes without sayin .... but if you knew what you were trying to close down its usually self apparent ... if you scroll along the line you can see which directory the files are in and work it out from that ... personally I always look in task manager first to work out what to shut down .... moral is tho don't touch it if you don't know what it is ....

Gary's pc tips number 2.....
Today Windows Vista.....
Disabling Automatic Startup Programs
If you don't want certain programs or applications to run automatically on startup, there's an easy way to disable them.
* Click Start
* Type msconfig in the search box
* Click Continue in the User Account Control to continue
* Click on the Startup Tab
* Uncheck any boxes in the "Startup Items" that you wish to disable or click the Disable All button (not recommended)
* Click OK
If you need to re-enable any of the programs, go through the same process and check the boxes of programs you wish to run automatically on startup
Am still figuring out Windows Vista like most people smile but thought this might be useful to someone :)

Tesco is a great shop. They reckon that out of every 7 retail pounds spent in the uk 1 pound is spent at Tesco. My only gripe is the price of the bloody petrol its no cheaper than the regular garages. Give some of the profit back please Tesco.
Gary's pc tips number 1....
First in a series of tips blatantly borrowed from someone far more clever than me.....
Today windows XP....
Eliminate animations
Ending useless animations in Windows will improve performance. Right-click the desktop, choose Properties, and then the Appearance tab. Click the Effects button and make sure everything is unchecked in the next window.

Having a prob with dropping connection every time the phone rings ,have put all new filters on and have it going from the phone line to PC any ideas please

Hi smile ..
Was this workin originally? Have you changed anything recently or started using a phone extension or something? You need to remove everything and just plug one filter and the pc in...and try to narrow down the prob....if you are sure all your kit is workin then maybe the fault is at the exchange and could be your isps responsability....very hard to fix via this forum and not hands on so to speak....Hope you sort it soon...
been like this from day one did every thing wot ya said above and they sent out a new box and was still the same
tks for the help

I do keep harping on about Firefox on this thread but it is far better smile
Cheers Gary xxx

Whats the difference confused: dunno
Hi :)...
I have been using it for years now and running it along side internet explorer....Firefox is faster and far more reliable in my opinion anyway....but its upto the user...most people do like it tho....thats why they have got something like 50-60% of the web using it...try it :)....if you don't like it blame me :)....there are countless add ons and skins for it as well if thats your thing....read somewhere that it is far more secure than IE as well....Its the speed I like....:)
Cheers Gary xxx
Hi smile ..
Quick question missy...what screen res are you runnin as you should not need to scroll left and right....if you have a 17" screen you should be on 1024*768...normally....this would stop the need to scroll left and right or it should....
Sadly sponsored links are the norm now on google....they come up on the right hand side normally tho....
I see you use Internet explorer.....I do keep harping on about Firefox on this thread but it is far better :)
Also if you do use Firefox there are several free extensions you can get for it (well there's loads actually) and if you are determined to bomb the adds you can get one called "adblock"...am goin to try this on mine tomorrow :) no time now am cooking dinner :)...

well its not so much crashing ....pc constantly disconects from internet

Hi smile....
Can be a few reasons for this....
I need to know how you connect to the net router etc....or wired....or adsl....or cable..... :)
Wireless networks can be the most problematic....for instance my laptop worked great with my router for 2 years or so....we introduced a new laptop to the router and my old laptop wouldn't connect....turned out the wireless card in my old laptop needed the latest version of their software to work and has never failed since....
Both work great now....

hi gary,
thanks for the reply. it's not a problem with sending the pictures. the problem is pictures that i can usually see on a web site suddenly being pixilated.
if anyone else has any ideas please let me know.
thanks!

Hi again smile...
Just humour me and try lookin at the same sites thru firefox, this will prove whether it is an IE prob or not......If it is an IE prob try this that I have just pinched from another site.....
Open up IE, and next to it open up a folder (start from "My Computer" or "My Documents") with images. Let's stick to .jpg images to keep it simple. Click and drag an image from the folder and drop it on IE. This should cause IE to display the image.
It should look like it does in PS. If it does not, then there must be some setting in IE that is wrong.
If the image looks fine in IE with this method, then the problem is with images on the web. This can be caused by some Internet Service Providers who put a "proxy server" in between you and the web, and this proxy actually recompresses images before passing them down to your computer. They call this "web acceleration" because they reduce the amount of data by drastically compressing images. This is OK for general web browsing if you have a very slow connection. But for photographers like us it sucks.
Hope this helps Gary xxx
Doh Well done H-x smile
Update on the lappie I was lookin at....should they be rusty inside lol....(conversation my mate should've had...)
