Should the Royal Engineers be tasked with and deployed to build bridges in Cumbria with out delay.

Ah, must be God's chosen few.... those elite cellar dweller miracle workers?

The Royal Engineers are trained to build bridges over fast flowing rivers and they have the manpower and equipment here in the UK to do it as and when required.
Why have they not been tasked and deployed to build bridges in Cumbria?
The civillian engineers are just talking about future bridge repair/building when the Royal Engineers could be building them in a week.
Modern military bridgeing equipment has moved on a lot since the 'Bailey' bridge and on that point i have driven over many Bailey bridges that were built many years ago and are still going strong.
As for military bridges only good for the weight of Tanks, Well i would ask what was the SWL of the pre flood 'Calva' bridge then?
As a former 'Sapper' i feel the authoritys are talking utter Tosh!

As a former Sapper you should realise that the Army has enough on it's plate at the moment, if they are not deployed on operations they need to be training and repairing worn out equipment for when they are deployed.
What we really need is National Service, no not the old style, a 21st Century National Service, a military styled, civilian organisation that can be trained to deal with civil emergencies, we don't need conscripts to fight wars but they can be trained on Green Goddess and even Red Fire engines (they can pump water out as well as throw it in) they can be trained in First Aid, evacuation proceedures, forest fire fighting, flood prevention and many other abilities which could help our Nations in time of hardship through disaster.
This would certainly help give our Youth a sense of being too, and ok if they have a job to go to, or a college placing etc they can be exempt, but 6 months unemployed and into the National Civilian Force they go.
