Should the Royal Engineers be tasked with and deployed to build bridges in Cumbria with out delay.

The Royal Engineers are trained to build bridges over fast flowing rivers and they have the manpower and equipment here in the UK to do it as and when required.
Why have they not been tasked and deployed to build bridges in Cumbria?
The civillian engineers are just talking about future bridge repair/building when the Royal Engineers could be building them in a week.
Modern military bridgeing equipment has moved on a lot since the 'Bailey' bridge and on that point i have driven over many Bailey bridges that were built many years ago and are still going strong.
As for military bridges only good for the weight of Tanks, Well i would ask what was the SWL of the pre flood 'Calva' bridge then?
As a former 'Sapper' i feel the authoritys are talking utter Tosh!
See you sorted yourself out. I do apologise for that kiss
Whack up a few baileys!

That just sounds sooooooo rude lol

PS I do now what he means........but I have an overactive imagination at this time of night
Apparently the local authority in Cumbria have said that any bridges that the Royal Engineers could build would only be suitable for tanks, not civilian traffic ... Yeah! Go figure!
Yeah..... a tank weighs what ten tonnes? A car?
Yes can work that one out.:smitten:

Have we got enough soldiers left in the UK to sort out our own problems? Wondering....
well while people are diverted to the shortage of equiptment of our troops to wage war and not question the war itself, wait for the reasoning from your m.p.'s and the media as to why the army cant be brought back to blighty to wage war against nature to save the "british". you will hear diversion after diversion. oh, and al gore, major share holder in the london based carbon trading derivitives company will say " see, it's global warming"
'elf and safety again.....

This is a thread about building bridges to help flooded out Cumbrians. For God's sake, wind your neck in.
Thanks for getting this thread back on course Foxylady which shows that you have a one tracked mind lol
Well it seems they are going to get a bridge to walk over within a week.
As a former Royal Engineer my view is that only being allowed to build a foot bridge shows a lack of ambition by the authoritys.
Let the army build a Medium Girder bridge that will take the weight of vehicles.
Building bridges quickly is the stock in trade of the Royal Engineers who have the manpower, equipment, and knowhow. Just let them to do it and they will.
Simples!!
Just tell the Americans that there are weapons of mass construction hidden in Cumbria - they'll be over in a shot.

They came over in the 40's and look what happened then. Half the war babies are called Earl or Dwayne. I'm not sure Cumbria could take it twice in a century. biggrin:D:D:D:D:D:D
On the other hand - tall, trained men in uniform - hmmmmm, where's my Wainwright's Walks in Cumbria? :D:D:D:D:D:D:D

If your tits match those on your avatar then who needs the yanks.
Truly they are weapons of mass distraction.
:eeek: lol

I have learned that since 2004 local councils are billed by the MOD for work done at the request of a local council which would make any council reluctant to ask for MOD help as a first resort
If this is so then why is it so in a time of emergencys?
Cumbria is such an emergency that the government should fund out of the national coffer.
A far better use of our money (IMO) than giving it away to foreign countrys.

Err, they would spend the first week building a bar, with dance floor, disco lighting and seated tables out of cotton reels and drift wood. The bridge would be next week!

I was really impressed when I saw on BBC News Website today.
Shows what you can do with some effort and the right equipment. Maybe we should have a Network Rail vs REME build-off. biggrin:D:D:D:D:D:D

Wrong outfit Foxy. It is the R.E. that builds bridge.
The REME fixes army vehicles but are not into wopping up bridges.

They are hot and sweaty and wearing uniform - you think I'm looking at what they are building? :giggle:
