I refuse to be drawn into this dull debate.

What.....You mean the one about the poor old hard done by self employed ?
That would be the one and the other one about how tax evasion isn't a problem.
i think its an opinion on tax evasion and I'm sure hmrc prosecute those that break the law regarding tax evasion
the rest of us are happy to use those laws to legally benefit from what we are entitled
problem ???
what problem :small-print:
Having read through a lot of what is posted in this Current Affairs forum it is no wonder that very few members post in here. Decent discussions are turned into childish playground brawls all in the name of oneupmanship. There is obvious baiting going on and from what I can see some members are being blatantly bullied. Maybe if the Moderators reigned in Moe, Curly and Harry it would encourage more people to start posting.

Good point, it gets very tired after a while and with the number of members we have here it is very very sad to see so few upsetting so many.

wave Welcome to Current Affairs!
I've been away from the UK for a while; who are Moe, Curly and Harry please?
I feel a whoosh moment coming on!

Could a passing mod have a look at the personal comments on this thread and have an edit if they deem it appropriate please. This nonsense really must be stopped. How can we expect to encourage participation by a wider audience if this kind of nonsense is allowed.

Like perhaps?
we seem to have gone from tax evasion to thread evasion.

Yes, sadly. It's a great shame that a lot of the possible natural humour and banter between consenting adults is suppressed in an attempt to avoid having your account blocked or threads withdrawn because of over sensitivity in some quarters. wink
ooo, thanks for that Lizalendrob  *sniggers*

To be honest, I'm really not sure what all the fuss is about or how it has come to this.
Whether you are a new member or an old one (the oldest seemingly posting in this thread having been here 40 years) everyone has the same right to be heard. No-one should have any fear of being harassed or bullied in the forums and I've yet to see someone making a lucid posting suffering that at all. I have come to realise that if I make a silly point or one that is incapable of being substantiated, I can expect to have that notion challenged - quite rightly so! Perhaps I, and some of my other fellow CA regular posters, have the experience and language skills to deal with such a challenge or a question to the authority or validity of a post or the good sense to withdraw/modify it in good spirit but, in my experience here, it is often done with great humour, tongue in cheek and with no malice or ulterior motive whatsoever. Surely that is what debate is all about. Looking back at some of my earlier postings I cringe and think "did I really write that?" but now I find my own style (and knowledge) improving all the time with experience. I want others to share that same opportunity.
I'm minded to reflect on the saying "if you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen" but that would unfortunately mean that some of the more novice posters would find it an oppressive atmosphere. That is not what I seek.
I would really like to see more contribution in the CA forum and for my part will defend someone's right to express a view - even if I don't agree with it but what I fail to see working is the spilling out of meaningless drivel or just repeating the same old mantra and when challenged, shrinking into a cocoon and throwing all your toys out of the pram!
I welcome challenges to my postings; it's healthy (keeps my old decaying brain in daily use) and gives the opportunity for self-improvement. If someone uses a form of words to express a view which doesn't seem to make sense, why should I need to consider sensitivity first when requesting clarification? If the response lends itself to humour, why not exploit it? I have done this in the current thread and others to very good effect without resorting to personal invective and generally it has been received well. I reckon I've got as much as I've given over the years too!
So, come on folks. Lets lighten up, bury the hatchet (in whose head I'm not sure yet) and start posting and learning in this wonderful facility brought to you at great pain and expense by the team at SH!
:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:
That speech almost had me standing at the end!
Great post GNV......here's hoping!
it came from the heart...
Well written GNV.............as usual.
From an " outsiders " point of view I can understand their fear ( if that is the right word )of posting on here. Members me included I may add, can dissect every snippet of someones post, and of course doing that things can well get taken out of context....that is what happens in forums of which I belong to a few.
I would say that I have probably the most outspoken views on here, and for that I appreciate that they will be targeted, especially in this pc world we now live in. I can handle that....not a problem. But what I do dislike is peoples deliberate attempts to get others banned purely because it does not agree with their views, that is bang out of order.
I have been posting on here long enough to know, that people take offense very easily and complain at the slightest little thing.
There is definatly a " them and us " attitude on here, which happens on here and on other forums and the real world...........out there in reality.
People choose sides on discussion boards such as this, it is human nature for many people to do that.
My threads spark debate....sometimes with strong subjects like I do it easily turns into something more than debate but.....strong issues are what ignites peoples minds, it ignites their ability to contribute.
Other forums I belong too my views are the norm, in fact I could well be seen as being slightly left wing , yet on here my views are it seems in the minority, horses for courses I suppose.
I of course would like to see a lot more posters on here, different opinions and attitudes but the lack of people posting is really no different in the CA arena than in the cafe.
Over a million members apparently yet I would say a handful of posters in the forums, I include all the sections of the forums in that...check it out.
On another swingers site I am on the forum is total rubbish with hardly any posters, and it is a huge site with many thousands of members. It could just well be that the huge majority just are not bothered with a forum but the sexual content of the site.dunno
Rob yesterday had the right attitude which is to blank the member/s who annoy you, but I find that difficult when a post I make gets quoted on and picked on. To ignore would be no better for the forum than it currently is, because all that does it to stiffle your own views which is possibly exactly what the other poster wants.:dunno:
Sometimes people can read too much into why people, or not a lot of people post in the CA part of the forum.
I know of a few people who are not members of this site yet love the forums, and read them a lot. How we get people to post in here I do not know, but what I do know is that the vast majority on this site, and others care not a jot about any forum.
Thanks for that kenty.
Sometimes, as you say, you have to be controversial to kick start a debate - mischievous even! but in the end, its the maturity of the protagonists which carries the debate through to a conclusion.
I didn't realise that people could read the forum without being a member...

If you go onto SH without signing in I am sure you can.
i can,t see that this thread was in danger of being locked or that people were being set up to get themselves banned. besides mods make that decision.
it just went off topic in a characteristically quirky sh way.
well the lead singers seemed to have cleared their throats, by letting off an aria. perhaps we can get back to some chorus work, general recititative and perhaps some duets and quartets.
