i really dont think this site should be seen to be condoning/recomending the use of a gun on a domestic animal.
these bb guns can kill cats, and any form of animal cruelty is wrong.
ok they shit in your garden? that does not mean you can break the law.
i actually feel that post should be removed. failing that i hope everyone knows it is against the law to shoot a cat.

shoot the cats with a plastic pellet BB gun - doesn't harm them but scares the living daylights out of them and they seldom return for another barrage.
Cat shit can cause blindness in young children - I don't care about their rights, they relinquish any consideration when they shit in my garden!

If it hits the right spot it can cause damage. I've been shot in the arse with a bb gun- and it was easily enough for a cat to lose an eye. The pellet, not the arse. rolleyes
Having had to curtail young kids playing in the garden because of cat unmentionables, I hate it as much as the next person. A water pistol is far less harmful, but just as effective a deterrent.
You can buy a sonic cat deterrent for about £25 and cat deterrent crystals for about £8 from B&Q etc. I have 6 cats and I use both items to keep my cats IN the garden, so they don't creep into other people's crypts, crap and creep out.
BB gun pellets can lodge under the animals skin and become infected as well as the possibility of blinding them.
When i had my german shepherd i carried scented nappy bags with me to clean up after her, we used to walk in the local fields that the kids played in, however i sometimes used to think i was the only one who bothered, and it had 2 dog poop bins at either end of the walk, no excuses poeple!!!!!
As for cats which are just allowed to roam anywhere, they are as much of a nuisance, my old neighbours had 2 that used to come and do their thing in my flower boarders so i used to shovel it up and throw it back over the neighbours fence, their cats, their cat poop, job done.
Don't think sonic cat deterrents work that well ... I used to have on on top of the fridge to stop my last cat jumping up onto it and from there onto the top of the cupboards ... only effect was his looking around thinking, 'WTF is that noise?' wink
The green scented stuff seems to work ok but is expensive and doesn't last very long ... good for keeping the cat off the veggies ...
Not a hope in hell of getting a cat with a water pistol ... I keep trying to spray my cat with the garden hose (cos it's funny!) but he's way too quick.
Amazes me when people complain about cats roaming, have yet to hear of how you stop them other than to keep them locked up indoors 24/7 or building 8' fences all round your garden ... bizarre! rolleyes
I get irritated if I come out and see some birds pooped on the car ... how inconsiderate, we should clip the wings off all birds while we're dealing with the cat poo issue ...
Thing is we don`t keep wild birds as pets, we do keep cats and dogs as pets and so should look after them so as children in their own gardens don`t end up with someone elses cat mess on their hands or shoes
Problem is, you don't give any practical/realistic suggestion re. cats ... dogs and cats are very different animals and for someone to say, 'Oh, cat owners should stop their cats roaming' shows a complete lack of understanding ... were that possible, I think the rspca/pdsa etc would have figured it out by now and it would be law.
Cats learn to use a litter tray very quickly, some cats can even be trained to jump up and poop in the toilet, but if they have access to the big outdoors, they roam, catch mice/birds, because that's their nature and I'm afraid pooping in soil is part of that ... you may not like it but that's the reality I'm afraid.
The clipping birds wings thing wasn't serious btw, it was half joking because it makes as much sense as the 'stop cats roaming' idea does.
I know it was a joke, i`m not that simple, but my point is if my dog came into your garden and un loaded you would not be very happy, i kept my garden clear of my own animals mess, then had to clear up after the neighbours animals too. My friend keeps her cats indoors, another poster has said she has alarms to keep her cats safe in her garden. So why is it only dog owners should be made to clean up??? Cat poop has just as many germs and diseases in it and my personal view is i didnt want it in my garden.
I got my cat from Battersea, they're extremely fussy about who they rehome animals to (easier adopting a sprog probably) and I'd never have got my cat had I said to them it'd be locked indoors all its life given. Garden fence is about 8ft high and he jumps it with the greatest ease so there's no keeping him in - that's my boy! biggrin
Neighbour has a golden retriever, lovely dog and can't leap 8ft fences cool
Only time I've heard Battersea etc suggest keeping cats indoors are (1) it's a house cat as in a flat (not ground floor) or (2) it has FIV so if it got into fights, it could infect another cat.
The day I go walk the cat on a lead, I'll happily clean up its mess ... it'd be a goddamn long walk though, cats only seem to poop about twice a day ...
I really can't see the point in cats. They serve no purpose and aren't even indiginous to this country. Similar can be said for pet dogs. At least you can eat pet rabbits when the kids get bored with them.
Seriously, pets? Why?

My cat serves a purpose confused
He's a great mouse catcher.
He calms me.
He makes me laugh and makes me very happy.
He has taught my youngest two children how to care for another life.
He's good company for our dog.
See loads of purpose to his life. smile
We would be lost without him

Can I borrow your kitten? pmsl
But mine is quite a large kitchen - I think I would need a few of them. Do you use them as a paintbrush or a roller?

Neither- you get yourself a bloke who's not nearly as hard hearted as you are, and use the kitten as...
leverage :giggle:
Some people just cant be arsed clearing up after their dogs crap in public places, nothing will change that.
My dogs do crap 'chalk', thats because they get a lot of bones in their diet, helps to empty their anal scent glands too.
Cats? No collar on, shoot em as feral moggies. I have to keep my dogs under control, cat owners should have to keep their cats under control too....nothing worse than a rampant pussy in the neighbourhood

I don't like the sound of where you live. lol
Walking through Lewisham shopping centre (possibly the arse end of the arse end of nowhere) this lunchtime ... feral kid with mangey looking dog - dog just stops, shits on the floor next to some old biddie sat on a bench ... kid and dog go wandering off ... rolleyes

Can't go along with the last part of that but I would say that people who own cats should (1) get them neutered/spayed as there are far too many strays and unwanted pets around as there are and (2) get them microchipped.
We have a dog and most of the times I remember to take the doggy poo bags with me but when I forget i do at least drag her off the path and far away as I can before she starts to poo. I also walk around for the rest of the walk with a shitty bag in my hand untill we get home and i can dispose of it :-(
My rant is the bleeding horses who crap all over the paths .............why don't their owners have to clean up after them ????
Every time I take the dog out thats what I'm muttering under my breath confused

They'd need some pretty big bags ... my guess would be the safety aspect - imagine a rider got off their horse to pooper scoop the poop and the horse bolted as there may not be a handy branch (etc) to tie it to ... rolleyes
well then they should carry bin bags the same as we need to carry dog poo bags and if the horse bolts run after it like us dog owners have to and if not safe to be in a public place in case they bolt because they are such a large animal and crap a lot then they shouldn't be there
At least horse poo is useful.
My Mum has an old photo of my Grandma stopped over in teh road shovelling up the droppings left by the milk-man's horse - it was THAT long ago. It was for the roses.
My Grandma hated that picture with a vengeance and tried to make my Mum get rid of it. I plan to inherit it and get it framed. biggrin A proper Yorkshire woman making use of the resources around her.
I like to poo in bags.

I thought horse poop had to be 'well rotted' before it could be used on gardens?
(... this is fab ... a whole thread just about poo! ...)
... and yes, ms_whips, some views seem totally divorced from reality/practicality, but I do enjoy reading them ...

you comments are rediculous reguarding horses. the reason we horse owners don't have to pick it up is coz all it is is undigested grass. it doesn't carry the same diseases that cat and dog muck do. if a horse has messed on the pavement the owner should move it. they shouldn't actually be on a pavement anyway but sometimes it is unavoidable. as for getting off just to move muck and the horse bolting....so an out of control dog takes off ignoring it's owner and runs into the path of a car. possibly at worst a dead dog and damage to the car with car people having whiplash. horse bolts because rider is on the floor picking up muck that does nothing and horse runs in front of a car. i'm taking it you've never seen the damaged caused by this? which at worst ends up with the horse and people dead. if your dog gets it's leg broken in an accident it can be fixed in some way. that is not going to happen with a horse. get a grip about it it's not worth the risk when their poo poses no risk. also it's plenty large enough to see, walk round it for god's sake. if you do happen to stand on it it won't stick to your shoes like dog muck anyway.
as for the last bit, i'm hoping that is said tongue in cheek because if not then i think you are being very silly. where the hell else are we supposed to ride? we have everything to contend with including people who think it's funny when their out of control dog attacks a horse. not so funny when the horse kicks it though. and bridlepaths are called that for a reason, it means horses can go there. if you don't like the horse muck there stick to all the footpaths that we were once allowed to use but have been taken away from us because of attitudes like yours.
whips
Well in my eyes pooh is pooh from whatever animal and it's surely manners to pick up after your animal. I don't mind where you ride as long as you don't leave any great big poohs over the path ways where children are walking and parents with their children in prams who have to dodge at best or risk getting some on them. But I suppose that's ok because it's horse pooh. And speaking for myselfe my dog is allways on it's lead and far be it from my dog lashing out at the horses it;s the other way round as many a time I've stood to the side of the track to let a horse past but it's taken an interest in the dog or the kids and scared them halfe to death
And as for it not being so funny for the owners when the horse kicks an out of control dog would you say that if it was the dog that bit an out of control horse???
