Good point from BG about the WWII debts, it's easy to forget that the US only came into that conflict because the Japs attacked Pearl Harbour! Yes, KS777 has another good point, even though over emphasized, we are now too dependant on the US, but the trick is to gradually distance ourselves from them and concentrate more on Europe, China and elsewhere and not be too quick to change things - gradually does it.
Reverting to Haiti, it's already too late to have much influence, just take things as they develop and do our best for those desparate people.
