it amazes me just how much peoples tastes in humour can differ as we have seen on here there are quite a few peeps that deal with something tragic with humour and then others find this completly tasteless
i do sometimes wonder if the people that are so outraged at the humour posted did actually let out a slight snigger on first reading the joke to then recoil at horror at thier own failing ( in their own eyes not mine)
like the comics that say a shocking joke and you hear the audience laugh and then gasp in shock, i often wonder if it is the shock that the comic said such a thing or is it shock at themselves for finding it funny
i like to deal with things with humour i very often poke fun at myself even in dire situations and i even make jokes about some awfull situations in the world not because i lack respect or sympathy or empathy just because its how i deal with things *simples*
i also think there r certain things that should never be joked about like victims of abuse i just can't find that funny i really can't don't know why just don't even snigger but then at the same time i don't criticize those that do make jokes about it i just think humour is subjective just cause one person finds it funny doesn't mean we all have to some might even find it tasteless but its not for me to judge
i love the fact we have freedom of speech and i don't like censorship so i for one am happy for people to joke about things that others might find tasteless even i might find tasteless but such is life rolleyes
With comedy there is a very important factor, timing. It is the difference in split seconds, of the delivery of the joke that can have people laughing or cringing.
So a lot of laughter is caused by accurately making use of this simple process. It won't matter much what is said, it can still cause people to laugh.
I have a seriously sick and twisted sense of humour, which I do share with selected friends, knowing their level of humour, but for general forum posting, it is never known exactly who will read it, so as much as I dislike censorship, I do a significant amount of self censorship, I offend enough people without going over the top, and am able to stop myself from posting something unnecessarily offensive.
Eastenders Pat just broke a picture over Jenes head, that made me laugh lol

Freedom of Speech also allows people to express their views on subjects they find tasteless.

I like freedom of speech too. I'm not really one for censorship either. People can say whatever they like but if I disagree or find it tasteless then I'm going to exercise my right to the same freedom of speech that they have used and tell them.
I don't expect a bunfight, I don't expect people to  their eyes at me for that either. Just like you have freedom of speech to say all you've just said. It works every which way and as long as we're all within the AUP then I don't see anything wrong with a lively debate expressing our opinions! wink

I'm not saying it's either good or bad, just saying that freedom of speech works both ways. If it can allow some to express their brand of humour, it can allow others to express their views on that humour.
What works for one, may not work for the other as you say Bouncy.
For bad illness and death last year of a loved one, humour was the way all our family including the dying one coped with it.
Even the hopital folk could not work us out at times!
It was our way, and it worked for us.
It will not be everyones though.
I've got a dry sense of humour so I don't actually laugh at jokes, really I don't.
I open and delete text jokes without reading them and the same goes for email ones too (sorry to those who send me them wink ).
I don't find stand up comedians amusing other than Peter Kay, boring I know but that's me. I think the reason I find him amusing is that he mocks life, everything he says is actually true, the best bit for me was the description of family members at weddings! lol
sick sick sick up to 'ere!

Just picking up on what Lucy just said. It always used to seem to me to be disrespectful to laugh at a funeral. I went to one at the end of last year that was dreadfully sad, the man in question had died when his motorbike collided with a van. During the service, some of his many very good friends got up to speak about him and several managed to induce the congregation into laughter, and to be honest, it was the best funeral I have ever been to. Many tears shed but the mood lightened by completely apt witticisms.
Like DG I like freedom of speech, when it's in it's right place.
I find jokes about urging someone one to die very distasteful indeed, someone tell me where's the humour in that?? dunno
I'm on the wrong planet, clearly.

If Jade Goody gets her finger out we can have a national day of mourning.
... is the post that has raised some comments... I chuckled... heartilly.
does that make me bad?
during my fathers illness... there were many an occassion for a wry chuckle at the sheer  value of a dreadfull situation.
morbid?

agree wholeheartedly opinions are just opinions and we all have the right to express them but we also have the right to  our eyes too

Try telling the same joke to her sons I DO agree with you ... but;
the joke wasn't said to her sons, nor was it intended as a poke at either of the folk being mentioned in the thread.
But I doo believe it was a light hearted instance of black humour. Something I for one do find funny
Not to everyones taste I have to admit.
If this comment had been posted here following a personal posting from a fellow forumite about their own situation... that would be different. Insulting and callous.

yea....has to be said found it distastefull and disrespectfull. each to their own but I could not see the humour in it. Makes me think why the need to post such a comment ? would have been easy to just move onto he next topic. Surely they knew that it would cause a stir and others would find it distastefull. Maybe it was just a "look at me...i'm such a rebel " post.. rolleyes

dean my darling you could very well b right but then i do somtimes think that some that post how awfull they find such things are sometimes trying to say look at me i'm a good person n i wouldn't mind bettin a pound to a pinch of shit that some that do so snigger at such jokes right before they post thier outrage
i could very well be wrong but just a thought i had
want to know where I saw the humour?
it was in the juxtaposition of the more reserved actress' demise against the build-up and preperation of the other media personality for her own death (she is indeed using the media in preperation for the said event, is she not?)
all this set against the current self perpetuated media frenzy surrounding the 'personality' and the cult of 'celebrety'/'public mourning' that seems to sweep the nation (if you were to believe headlines) at the drop of a hat, no matter the 'person' or the 'circumstance'
there is no decency out there in media land
it's a funny old world.
of course, if you didn't want to know what I found funny, please don't read any of the above >he chuckled<

People laugh at different things in different situations.
My father died 2 weeks after my daughter was born and I drove back to England for the funeral a couple of weeks after driving back to be there when he actually died.
I was totally exhausted by the day of the funeral.
My sister wanted to festoon the coffin with expensive wreaths and generally throw loads of money at the thing to express her grief !!
My daughters name is the name of a plant so I suggested that the coffin should have a single flower from that plant placed on it. As the particular flower was out of season the florist managed to "manufacture" a substitute from another type of flower.
There were a lot of people at my Dads funeral and, of course most of them didn`t know my daughters name and when they were told why the single bloom was on the coffin, I don`t think a single person manged to keep back the tears.
I found the whole situation hilariously funny especially as it annoyed my sister so much.
I could just imagine my Dad having a little chuckle about it while defending her to the hilt lol
We all laugh at different stuff ...If you don`t find something funny, say your piece and move on.
Maybe Bens comment was made deliberately to wind people up.....I don`t know dunno But always remember, it only works if somebody bites.

how true that is hun now bend over so i can bite ya bum
