I'm sure you will admit there is a huge difference between knicking from HMV, (prety pointless with cd burners etc), and pissing on a memorial to those we lost in the wars? There must have been some intentional disrespect there regardless of how drunk he was.

an awful thing to do I agree, although, and it doesn't excuse what he did, please remember that this lad is 18 years old on a student on a night out and out of his face on booze. I think many of us have been in that situation before now. What he did was awful and, I assume, under normal circumstances he would never of dreamed of doing what he did, probably not even realising what he was doing. If what is said is true about the amount of alcohol consumed then I'm surprised he could get it out to p*ss even.
Though awful and people will be shocked I don't think it should be looked at as a hanging offence and the fact that his picture is in the paper and he's been charged is proof he's getting dealt with in my view.

You're talking about a lad who had apparently drunk a bottle of scotch before he went out on a commercially organised student night out during freshers week, the aim of which was no doubt to ply 19 year old kids with as much cheap booze as they can throw down their necks. Apparently the kid had already passed out once on the pavement earlier, so I'd be amazed if Philip Laing even new where he was, let alone deliberately set out to 'outrage the public decency' by pissing on a war memorial, an offence for which he's been told he could face jail. There is a massive distinction to be made between the actions of those who quite deliberately set out to cause public disorder, and the actions of a kid who was probably so far gone as to be completely incapable.
I don't think he had any bloody clue what he was doing, so in that respect no I don't think he's as culpable as has been made out. To be truly guilty of a crime, you do kind of need to be aware of what you're doing, and act deliberately.

By the time I was 19 I was already a father myself, and boy did I put the drink away some. I did all sorts of bad things, things I dare not talk about 24 years later. What I can say is that I NEVER would have even dreamt of desecrating a war memorial, let alone publicly pissing on one. What that little bastard did was akin to pissing on a dead soldiers grave in front of his grieving family, Kenty is quite correct it is unforgivable.
In my opinion this kind of disrespect for our ancestors is typical of the shithole this country is becoming. People don't care about our history or the sacrifices made to give us such a fantastic legacy. Parents are no longer teaching their children the basic fundementals of respect. Nevermind though, because as we sink further into this sea of crap, as schools teach political correctness at the expense of real education, as churches are replaced by mosques, as mothers try to excuse the fact that their twelve year old daughters are pregnant, fuck I could go on all day but it is all leading us in one direction. National service should never have been abolished, young people would have more respect for ordinary adults after a few years of living in the iron grip of an RSM. When I was a school kid I used to go to cadets every week, weekend camps at army bases, up to my eyes in mud on an assault course on a freezing Friday night. The NCO's were bullies, there is no doubt about it, but it is character building stuff.
This is a sick society we are living in today, and unless the entire system is overhauled it will only get worse.

He said "That in the war people acted like animals, they killed maimed and brutalised people. He remembers the joy he got when he shot a German solder in the head as he got out of his armoured car. Millions were killed on all sides." He told me "To remember all dead solders as murderers as well as saviours, when is a human killing a human ever right"
I agree what this lad did was very wrong and that he should be punished for it. But what about those people who choose not to remember the wars at all. Those people who choose to walk by and not even look. Those people that do not want to think about the, loses, sacrifices and evils the wars brought, these people are almost pissing on it themselves.

I would assume at the age you are BG that we were doing the same sort of thing although I was mod and used to travel the length and bredth of the country going on rallies and every single one I ever went on was not without incident happening with "Innocents" I fought with skinheads and others on three out of four coastlines of Britain and it was always always crapo for the locals. I got arrested lots for different physical crimes and not once was I offered a "good hiding" instead of going to court. You must of been doing your skinhead stuff in a fluffy land far far away because where I was it was all nasty fighting drinking,destroying things, and though fun in a personally perverse way, it was never OK for other members of the public. I even think the youth of the late 70's early eighties were far more disaffected than today. Only after Maggie thatcher brought more money into peoples pockets, especially the young, did the shit from disaffection stop. I'd say circa 1983/4 just post minors strike.

I agree what this lad did was very wrong and that he should be punished for it. But what about those people who choose not to remember the wars at all. Those people who choose to walk by and not even look. Those people that do not want to think about the, loses, sacrifices and evils the wars brought, these people are almost pissing on it themselves.
Remember lest we forget
The trouble is that it wont be long before everyone does forget. The trouble with that is if history is forgotten then so are all the lessons learned. Politicians start wars, soldiers have to finish them or die trying. The evils in my opinion were the fault of the politicians on both sides, the losses and sacrifices were made by the civilians who were dragged away from their homes and families and made to fight people they know next to nothing about.
WW1 was supposed to be the last, the war to end wars, people believed that and made those sacrifices hoping that the world would learn. 21 years later they were at it again, and it is only the threat of neuclear holocaust that has prevented ww3, 4, or even 5 from happening.... yet.
The memorials are also there to remind us all. Lest we not forget....

Yes I was young and yes I used to get into a bit of bother through fighting and stuff, but I would have never ever pissed on a war memorial, as out of control that I may have been.
My two kids would also never done anything like that, and mrs777's kids would never either.
Maybe as we have a 17 year old in the army, who left home at 16 to go there, and see what he has been through, and what he now knows is RESPECT, that I have very personnel feelings about this.

I listened to a radio talk show today and most of the people who phoned in and were forgiving were in fact in the armed forces or had been in the armed forces....

I think people that are not in the forces are shielded from the real horror of battle. We are given the sugar coated pill of war. People in the forces see that in this country we have more freedoms and this is the freedoms that they fought for..
If we take away these freedoms are we not pissing on the solders ourselves ?

As for saying in an earlier post you knew someone would use that comment. All thats doing is giving yourself an angle to come back on rather than a reason discuss the comment. I use the same tactic myself its a great tool but not a reasoned one.
One thing is for sure 777 my grandparents the three that are dead and all who served in the war would be mortified to see how you'd approach the problem.

I would assume at the age you are BG that we were doing the same sort of thing although I was mod and used to travel the length and bredth of the country going on rallies and every single one I ever went on was not without incident happening with "Innocents" I fought with skinheads and others on three out of four coastlines of Britain and it was always always crapo for the locals. I got arrested lots for different physical crimes and not once was I offered a "good hiding" instead of going to court. You must of been doing your skinhead stuff in a fluffy land far far away because where I was it was all nasty fighting drinking,destroying things, and though fun in a personally perverse way, it was never OK for other members of the public. I even think the youth of the late 70's early eighties were far more disaffected than today. Only after Maggie thatcher brought more money into peoples pockets, especially the young, did the shit from disaffection stop. I'd say circa 1983/4 just post minors strike.

I used to go on scooter runs too, too young to ride one I had to go on the back of one of me mates. Most of the runs were good natured, I guess Yarmouth was prety bad when the Hells Angels (Outcasts) ambushed us, and Scarborough was always dodgy at night, nightclub bouncers being the biggest problem. I'm going back to 80/81 when I was a schoolboy myself so mostly scouting or spotting. I don't remember ever vandalising war memorials or kicking people to death for complaining about the noise, and I'm sure I would.
