Just seen that the head of the Catholic church in England has said its right that the tax payers should foot the £12 millon bill for the pope's 4 day visit!!!
Is it right should we foot the bill so the Pope can come see his flock so to speak?
The Catholic church is reputed to be wealthy if he wants to come why cant he foot the bill or part of it?

oh, I like this one, be back later when I have more time
Vatican City is a state - apparently. Personally I couldn't care less what they call themselves. This is a religious leader of an OBSCENELY rich organisation that is coming to visit. Very nice and welcome too - but only relavent to those in that same organisation.
There is no justification for expecting me (I'm an Athiest so I would say the same for any church leader choosing to visit their flock) to pay for his jaunt. And to pay for his security? No way. If i want to go travelling, I pay my own way - so should he.
If he's coming as a Head of State he shouldn't be doing his other job of the religious stuff.
From what I've been hearing, even his own people aren't that bothered about the visit.

Its a state visit, we fund them.

Went to this site to see what was what!! & found the request for Donations saying...
"Funds raised for the Papal Visit to the UK 2010 will be applied to defray the costs of the visit payable by the Church and the legacy planned by the Bishops of Scotland, England & Wales."

If the 'Church' is incurring costs then it isn't the 'State' so it isn't a state visit. Seems clear enough.

Re foxys point, his job is religious,we fund our head of state opening hospitals which seems to be her job.

True, but we aren't charged an entry fee to watch it...
A survey by ComRes found that 77% of people think taxpayers should not be funding the trip, while 79% have "no personal interest" in the tour.
From here

I fall into that 77%
i don't want to contribute to his visit if he's going to piss off gay people and generally make a cunt of himself.
A carefully considered and thought out response..........Arrest the protecting cunt

I do not think I have ever used that word on here, but then if you stare into the blah blah blah bollocks, then maybe I should eh?
Ain't it the 6th yet? wink
For me I do not give a shit whether he comes here or not.
The Catholic church is full of fucking hypocrites, and if they want him to come here then I do not see the need for anyone, other than the Catholic church to pick the tab up.
The British taxpayer should tell whoever is responsible to fuck off, and pay for the visit yourself.
There............that feels so much better.

All religous organisations are full of hypocrites, not just the Catholic Church, but what i find hypocritical are the hateful/spiteful remarks of some of the posters here towards the Pope, but they would probably bend over backwards defending other religous groups/leaders deemed just as or worse than the Catholic Church, if those kind of remarks were being posted here. The Pope may have an opinion about gays you don't like but as far as i know, he's not having them hung for it, he maybe protecting pedophiles, but he's not forcing young girls to marry older men like other religous cultures do, you may also think he is a woman hater, but are catholics suppressing women and treating them like 3rd class citizens, so when did the Pope become this big bad guy all of a sudden?
The thread was about the Pope Powers, so why bring one of the other religious leaders into it?
I could do easily as yes they are all hypocrites, and not a single one of them can prove that there is actually any God at all, that is why I am a non believer.
I much prefer the Stephen Hawkins version myself. wink

I think you would be surprised exactly how much of your hard earned goes towards people who fall into the latter category.

My point is if i started a thread bashing the muslims/their leaders, some of the very people in this thread using some very offensive remarks towards the Pope would come to their defence. What i'm trying to say is don't get on the moral high horse, if my views on a particular subject differ from yours, when some of the remarks in this thread also stoop to that level.
Fair enough points indeedy.
You can imagine the outcry if a famous Muslim leader was going to visit, and somebody called him a " cunt ".
I am sure that the powers that be ( no pun intended ) on here, would no doubt ban that member for such abusive remarks.

Exactly, some people will quite openly call the Pope a cunt, but if you did the same to some islamic leader, people would be baying for your blood!
just to clarify my position i think all religion are cunts
That is the world we now live in, and God forbid saying anything a tiny bit bad against the Muslim leadership.
Blimey they do not even have a funny side to cartoons. lol
I shall send you a very funny joke............enjoy. wink

Seconded.
And this thread, or the direction it is heading in is just one small part of the justification I feel when I sneer at people who say this is an open-minded community, in fact I find it is often the opposite.

I had not seen your point to start with, double standards indeed
Can I just remind posters that we have many catholic members here, please have respect for those members who may not post but read this forum.
This is what the thread is about for those who've forgotten.

Very true Anais and on that basis IF the same views would have been expressed about Muslims the thread would have been removed because of those comments made. Well the " c " word certainly.
So on that basis I think it should be, otherwise it cannot be locked in any future event, if the same views are expressed in such a way as has been shown here, towards the pope.
IF the Pope was black and that word was used against him we would have the racist brigade screaming from the rooftops...why should it be any different because it is the Pope?
