sent u a pm  hope it helps a little
Escorts were favourite for the back lights filling up with water and popping the fuses..
Have another good look throught the fuse box and make sure the back lights arent full of water ..
Go on I'll chuck an opinion in.
Not sure what age it is but I had an XR3 do something very similar, I lost the fookin lot. the alternator light came on and all the others lights went out. 2 alternators and 4 hours in the workshop at work later. I bit the bullet and sent it to a sparky. Turns out it was a fooked relay. I'd swopped em round but it turns out 2 do a simliar job and they need to be both working.
If one bulb blows it wont affect the others so unless there is a wierd electrical fault behind the dash I cant see any need for you to take it apart..
To be such a catastrophic failure it simply has to be a fuse or a relay.....
I get similar problems on trucks and it always turns out to be a fuse or a relay..

Same prob with my Cavalier once. The Alternator light came on and all went haywire. I replaced alternator all hunky dory.
Oh yes the number of light shows i've seen on the back of a ford escort and sierra lol its a common thin allright
Good luck DF xx
all escorts have this prob. you will have to change the whole fuse board, its a commen fault in all ford not much you can do about it.

Had several Escorts and never had to replace a fuse board dunno
SImply empty the water out of the rear lights and when refitting the lights run a bead of sealer around the seal and that cures the problem
And the stalk assembly is the bit that you push up or down to make the pretty blinker thingies work and makes all the lights go on and off as well smile

Sorry - can't offer any pearls of wisdom but if we'd known you weren't going to make it into work we could've got pissed, camped down and finished(/started?) our yakking!
.
Like stevetatt said, and i have to agree, theres a 99% chance you'll have to replace the full fuse box, this is a common problem with escorts especialy mk 5 & 6 and the faults you describe points exactly to a faulty fuse box.
Might not need a new fusebox, it could just need repairing. I did a similar job on my mates Rover, which had a similar problem, only with the windows and locking. We removed the fusebox and soldered the joints on the connector block and it's still going fine almost 3 years later.
Although it could be proper fooked, but i'd check if you can (loosen the screws securing it and give it a wiggle if possible, see if anything starts working that wasn't)
the last option is to torch it and claim off your insurance biggrin bolt
And we both know you'll know several people that can sort it wink
Let me know if i need to delete my posts/the evidence rotflmao
Only just spotted this post, so its way too late to help you with a monday trip, but here goes anyway:
If your lights are controlled by a switch on the end of a stalk to the left of the steering wheel (this stalk also controls the indicators) then get the switches checked out. They have a habit of wearing out/packing up and you may need to replace the whole assembly.
Worth a try anyway - hope this helps
John
repaired a few escort fuse boards, usally find one of bus bars has fractured, usally you can solder a link across the faulty connection, the other common fault is the lights front or rear getting wet and rotting the earth links out, very common to see escorts with lights that all glow or flash with the indicators, that is normaly a earth fault.
should have gone with meaty's idea........ rolleyes

I was about to describe it as the stick thing for hanging your handbag on.
Would that have been worse?
