well... I PM'd an answer and it was wrong...
I had to bear my sole to give that answer too...
I thought it may have been a mirror.
the mirror itsself not being seen, though the reflected image (appearing 'behind' the refelcting plain etc etc)
The personal level exposed by my answer was my primate like fear of mirrors... the reflected image not being understood by my tiny mind and fear of threat as a consequence.
