Are the tabloids responsible?

I believe the tabloids have shaped public opinion for years, what they say many people believe, as we know one of the leading newspapers is the sun.
I feel the tabloids love a good scare mongering story they thieve on it, why because it makes them mega bucks, they can fuel a simmering fire into a raging inferno, it is a shame that many people believe what they say without gathering all the facts for themselves.
When are people going to wake up to see tabloids for what they really are, I gave up reading tabloids on the back of, myself partly blaming them for the death of Diana, I have never bought a newspaper since I made my stand towards them. Not that it has done any good but it has made me feel a whole lot better.
I believe we should be informed about what is going on in the world I get my information from various forms and try to gather enough facts to form my opinion but always keep an open mind.
Take what is happening with the banks, the media has turned this into a raging inferno.
They give people a slight spark and drip feed the oil to keep the fire going.
This isn’t the first time the tabloids have caused unrest on an issue, and it will not be the last I believe, this will die down when they move on and report on something else.
When are we going to learn?
What are others views on this?
Do you think the tabloids are responsible for this?
I couldn't agree more.
However, (there's always a however)
The papers print what people want to read. They don't want a bland grey world. They want an exciting world that matches the hyper realisism of soap operas
you forgot to mention Radio 1 news too,its so misleading, sensational and scare mongering, they try there best to make the news sound cool,am a constant listener of radio 5 live so i avoid all the papers generally
The trouble is that NEWSpapers can't cover the news. With 24 hour rolling TV news, radio news all the papers can do is report what happened yesterday (which we've heard or seen already) so that make up or glamourise the stories they print.

and pope john paul 11 at hospital adressing journalists after failed 1981 assasination
"hey guys, am reading newspapers to find out how am doing"
The only time i read the daily crud or any of the other turdsheets is when i'm waiting to get my hair cut.
Other than that i can find out everything i need from the internet with a bit of radio and tv and then make an informed decision as to what i think is true.
I never trust what i see in a paper as they all have their own politcal agenda and the desire to make money regardless of who they shit on to do it rolleyes

I just feel a lot of people feel so negative about life at times, and when you talk to them they say have you read what the papers have said. I am sure they determined peoples moods..As for soaps don'e even go there lol
I never watch them, and they have in my mind a part to play too.

Meaning? lol
The question you need to ask is have the papers got too much power?
I believe a lot of the time they have. The Sun with over 4 million readers, helped secure a Labour victory to topple the Tories. They also played a major role, in getting Maggie into power. They have a massive influence on its readership. Now whether or not that is right, I will leave that up to others to decide.
I have said many times, I buy a newspaper to look at the tits, a few silly stories and the sport. I admit that. But I do not want to spend my days reading the Times or the like. I want something light hearted to read, and the Sun for me, gives me that, as it does for over 4 million people.
Also me old mate Gaunty, yes you know THE man who says what others are too terrified to talk about, is in the Sun.
Just like in here with so many different opinions, those same people also have different views on what they want to read. Just like what you want to watch on the telly.
Plus with the credit crunch the Sun is still only 30p. Roll up....roll up.

Excellent thread, going on here.
I feel that are lovely 'red-top' newspapers have way tooo much influence OVER the population.
They attempt to explain complex issue(s) in simple terms. Yet if a complex issue(s)is just that how can you make it simple... confused:
As well as way too much focus on celebrity culture.
Yet, it's a large percent of the British Popualtion that buy them....so the problem lies with them :?
The broadsheets do themselves no favours by being so expensive...Independent is now ... Just in the week.
What's strange is if you live or work near any large University in the U.K, you can buy The Guardian & Independent for just 30p... :?:
If you want a change I recommend The Guardian, does touch a bit on the popular culture & has an excellent Sports section. It also has a goos sense of humour.

With the amount of people they attract others here will not admit it lol

I believe people should stand up and be counted we cant knock you for that!
You know I joke about with you, but you also know we will never agree! lol

Still I think that your above statement on what I placed in this thread is quite...strange... confused
Maybe you are doing it to 'rub me up the wrong way', perhaps? Still if that's the level of input you are placing into what has so far been a good thread then don't contribute.

10 House Points for helnheaven.
I agree Minx. When discussing issues you can tell that people's views are formulated reading only the popular tabloid newspapers. People are lazy and look to the short and quick answer to problems rather than to formulate their own thoughts after taking in all sides of the argument.
I admit to buying the Sun on occasions as the lazy and cheap option but take any "reporting" it has with a large pinch of salt. On numerous times it`s reporting has been proven to be totally in-accurate, the worst case being Hilsborough.
It's clear though that some people don't. Media is a powerful tool and mass popular media is the greatest tool of all. It's no surprise Tony Blair courted the Sun to win the last election ... it remains to be seen which party they will support at the next, but rest assured it will provide the party with a helping hand.

Dont be silly Wunder. Blimey have you heard all the comments aimed at me for reading the sun? Do I believe they are trying to " rub me up the wrong way " ?

Correct, Suede-head.
Yet certain people still think its a great newspaper... confused:
From,

I never said a great newspaper. It is a paper I can read in the ten minutes I get for lunch. If I was not at work no doubt I would have the time to read one of the " proper " papers out there.
I get ten mins for lunch...thats it. Blimey with the Times, I would get to page 5 in ten mins. lol
Can we not beg to differ on here, for fear of upsetting others?

I understood the general gist of what Kenty was saying and to me it was said in jest more than anything... dunno
As for the topic.....
I believe a lot of people do take as gospel things they read in the papers....
If that makes the papers to blame then I suppose the answer to the question is yes...
I tend to read papers and also listen to news etc and see if anything is co-oberated(sp) before making my mind up....
If there is any truth at all in what a paper says then some of it will be duplicated somewhere else I think...
Sorry to disect your posts(s) Wunder but I found it easier to respond to the points that way smile
