as if our boys in blue have no criminals to catch, they`re investigating a so called "racist" comment after a re-run of a 6 yr old basil brush episode, where a joke was made about making this up,honest.
irish travellers made the complaint to police.
now in my book, irish is a race, the gypsy bit is just a lifestyle choice.
what do you guys think?
Years ago the word 'gypsy' was acceptable, can anyone remember "Kizzie" about a young girl living in a gypsy caravan with her grandma?
Now of course, gypsies are referred to as travellers, and apparently have the same rights as anyone else in the 'minority' zone.
It's a shame because when Basil was first around there was nothing in what he said.. just like Noddy when he had his golly pal - I had one of those, now they're banned on TV.
Oh how times have changed sad

Sorry quick hijack. Yes I remember it and I still have the book now wink I loved it then and I still do now.
Strangely enough, I didn't know it then but found out much later that my great great grandma was a Romany gypsy who lived in the authentic caravan and never settled in one place until she died. I always felt a little bit of an affinity with Kizzy.

I'm sure AnneJohn won't mind the slight hijack... I hadn't realised there was a book out? I'd be interested in the details if you wouldn't mind pm'ing me with them

Not quite sure if the complaint was that the joke denigrated the Irish or travellers/gypsies?
If it was the latter then I don't understand the reference to the Irish at all. Sorry - probably me being a bit thick.
I guess if a complaint has been made then the police are obliged to investigate - can't say I envy their job at the best of times really.
Interesting point about lifestyle as opposed to race. I think your right.

Last year I read an article as part of one of my modules, it was about irish travellers and the discrimination they were up against.. they were 'racially' attacked. It would seem in their case it was a bit of both? perhaps I interpreted it wrong tho.
Romany, or the Rom is effectively catagorised as an ethnic group in the same way as Jew.
Or it certainly used to be anyway.

Just goes to show how far this country has gone down the " mad " road !!
As i think u all know by now im an old hippy liberal.
Even I think this is ridiculous.
If comedy disappears because you cant use stereotypes I will be a very sad man.
On the plus side it wont get very far cos the crime reported is inciting racial hatred and thats very hard to prove.
Sadly that wont stop the people who give the nod to comedy from running scared.
Shit no more shameless eek thats like a documentary of my early years.

true
this is getting out of hand.
People complaining like this is just plain a kids program of all things.
Now, if basil brush had gipsy's running out of tescos with loads of shopping trolleys full to the brim without paying i would say ok.
And if he had them turning up with dogs and shooters then id say ok.
And if he had them refusing to move on without a benefit cheque then id say ok.
And if he had them stealing work tools off the back of vans then id say ok.
He's a racist.
But he just a bloody puppet and a famous one at that.
Can we not have anything without someone saying you cannot do this or say that.
I got one word for the lot of it.
BOLLOCKS!

There is a story.
The king of Persia asked a group of musicians Gypsiesfrom northern India to his cities. They were to play for the people. In return, as was the custom, he gave them land, seed corn, tools and animals to support themselves. They sold the land and tools, eat the corn and return to the king asking for more. The king in his anger cast them out of his kingdom to wonder the world.
It is said that all Gypsies are descended from this body of indians. Therefore they are a race.
Travellers are just that people who choose to travel.
nice story, but even if there are true romany gypsies in this country, the ones who are complaining are irish home they are called tinkers and certainly dont have the authorities bending over backwards to preserve their "rights"
we`re just too nice for our own good.

The country we live in has gone mad.....We pay so much of our wages to mr tax man and then he taxes us on everything except the air we breathe (so far anyway).....and now if I look out and see someone stealing our car (which is taxed every which way).....I can ring the police and expect a rapid response....unless there is a puppet to investigate and in that case tough luck......
As was said earlier in the thread it was such a tame reference to a gypsy life style of days gone by......saw the clip on the news....the mind boggles that some people have so much time on their hands.....I am thinking of complaining to the police the next time a programme made in the US refers to british people and shows a red bus, a beefeater and tower bridge......thats blatant stereotyping smile :) ...........ok rant over :) :)

Stereotyping is absolutely a factor in and a version of racism; the "comedy" that uses stereotypes is likely to be funny only to the people who hold the prejudices, not the stereotyped.
I am often offended and saddened by stereotypes, comedic or otherwise, of my race and others. I meet this quite often, from people who don't realise how offensive they're being or are too insular to realise that someone they're speaking to may actually be a member of the race they are insulting.
I hope Basil Brush is banned forever - because I have always hated him - I'm foxist - boom boom!

Good for the playground perhaps; not so useful for genocide.

agreed.
My niece, who's now 27, came home from nursery school at the tender age of 4 all excited because she'd learnt her first nursery rhyme...........Ba Ba WHITE Sheep
Whoever it was that said stereotypes are bad.
I cant be bothered.

Looked at this and thought "Has Sassy gone mad?".
Left it, went back to it, looked at it again. Still couldn't work out what the hell she is going on about.
Finally dawned on me......it was a ruddy black sheep. I need to get my brain in gear one day.

And the one that says "What do you call a Welshman with 50 lovers? A shepherd" That really gets my goat.......or sheep.....one of the two lol

Stereotypes can be used to hurt and demean and inspire hatred.
They can also be used to enlighten console and delight.
The problem with political correctness is it assumes we are all morons and cant tell the difference.
I use a lot of comedy that isn't "politically correct" and my children berate me for it having grown up in the baa baa white sheep school yard. I spend a lot of time educating them about the difference between the two kinds of humor.
Shameless is my favourite comedy series. It is my favourite because it shows the people I grew up with behaving in the ways I know we behaved. If white working class people were a minority in this country it would be banned. But it isn't seeking to inspire hatred. Its seeking to laugh at a common experience. Sadly I am sure there are people who watch it with hate. I watch it with affection and enjoy it immensely.
Similarly I can laugh at Basil Brush because I share the experience. I will never forget the "gypsy" who called at my door and I unwisely signed up to his tree surgery services and before I knew it his sons aged 12 to 15 were climbing every tree in the garden armed with chain saws while he bellowed expletives from below.
It doesn't mean I hate anybody.
I also laff at the phone jacker when he does the Nigerian phone scams, not because I hate Nigerians but because I share the experience. I will never forget my colleague Igbo who spent his entire time at work running a car export business and was only found out when he started using his company credit card to buy cars. That doesn't mean I think all Nigerians are crooks.
I don't hate anybody but I do reserve the right to laugh at shared experiences.
