Before I go to bed.........................(peanut please, I didn`t make it the title wink )
I`m a great fan of Bill Bryson, his book `A walk in the woods` accompanied me when I was on that very trail. I`ve read quite a few of his works, and wondered how many others here have also?
Venusxxx
He is brilliant I've read all his books and force everyone I know to read them too. I've bored everyone to death with extracts from A Short History of Nearly Everything - just brilliant. A Walk in the Woods is particularly good.
(And er just to interrupt for a moment - MikeNorth can I combine 2 book posts in one by saying no not read Eats Shoots and Leaves but hope to soon. biggrin )
Sorry, Venus - Bill Bryson - please continue.
No worries. I haven`t bought `A short history` yet, I have most of the others. I was in tears reading the Aussie one! Mother Tongue is great too, I used it when I had to home educate my eldest.
Now where was I?
Oh yes, bed!
Night all

I've read most of his stuff.
In "Down Under", his account of a cricket commentary he heard on the radio is possibly the funniest thing I have ever read. biggrin
I'm not entirely sure who he is. did he write Notes from a Small Island (or something vaguely like that?)
If so, then thats the one I've read and loved! In fact, it's the complete notes - of here and when he goes back home. Two books in one.
(Let me know if I'm talking about the same person here, or just the usual bollocks)
Marya: Indeed, Bryson was the one who wrote Notes from a Small Island, which was "required reading" for me (per Vix) before I moved to the UK. The best thing about the American printing of that was the inclusion of a glossary - quite useful for those who don't have the faintest idea what a "counterpane" is! When browsing through Vix copy of the book after I'd moved here, I found the glossary conspicuously missing - which was too bad, coz it was as entertaining as the rest of the text!
Celticq: Vix & I are reading Eats, Shoots & Leaves at the moment - utterly brilliant, that, and should appeal to quite a few of the fellow pedants I've encountered here on SH!

My copy doesn`t have the notes either...........
Whatis a counterpane?! dunno

Hi
says,
A cover for a bed; a bedspread.
rolleyes
Oh! I thought it was something to do with windows! Thanks smile
I watched some of his series on Sky. He speaks completely differently to how I read him, with a s-l-o-w mid American accent, couldn`t get on with it! No disrespect to the man, it`s just a regional accent after all, just one I find maddening (except for when John Malcovich does it). I MADE Mars sit through the programme in order to persuade him to read the books (I`ve been at him for ages!). He pulled a face listening to the drawl, and still hasn`t read anything by him *pout*

Venus~
I'm embarrassed to report that, after finding my American copy of Notes and checking the glossary, "couterpane" is not one of the included words. Quite surprising, since he includes many of the other decidedly non-American terms he uses like: "dirty weekend", "loo", "semidetached house" and "swift shag against the cooker" (ok, maybe not that last one, but he does include "cooker" in his glossary).
Come to think of it, I must've looked "counterpane" up on , too! redface

Thankyou for the confirmation, Reese.
I'm now off to the library to see if I can fiind any of his other books biggrin
Yes, and I should have done! redface
I`ve been terrible, and lent most of my books out, I miss them.......
BUT PEOPLE NEED TO READ THIS STUFF!
Go now! Take my car wink lol
There`s a very good dictionary he wrote, dealing with the differences between words like `accept` and `except`, and so forth. It`s the most fun you`ll have being educated, but I forget it`s name.
Anyone?

The sooner the better, as Vix & I need to settle the ongoing debate over whether or not we can comfortably fit 4 in our bed. ;)

Maybe we could all slot together somehow..................... lol
Travels in Europe I`m ashamed to admit is one of his books I haven`t read, and it`s been around for ages! redface
Venusxxx
read it today, its hilarious, you can imagine the excitement of going round belgium can't you !!
Actually, Belguim sounds good about now!
I remember when I stopped off at Iceland on my way to the States, I couldn`t see one tree when we flew over.
Then I found out why.
They built their airport with them all! surprised
Venusxxx
I accept Iceland beats belgium in the strange but boring stakes but...............
can you offer me one worse than......................Poland,can't remember if its in the book so technically I am on dodgy ground but they only build dodgy ships and everywhere is cold and white lol.
I`m afraid I`m out of my depth! I must read that book!
Venusxxx
If i get everything else wrong in life I can promise you that you will laugh your knickers off reading it.
Here's a challenge - go buy it from all good book stores today............
Paulo.
biggrin
Gizzsum dosh then! lol
Most of my books are bought from charity shops or book fairs, people can`t be giving up the European book confused
Venusxxx
Sorry bit like the queen don't carry any actual cash, but I will carry the book around with me for a while so if we ever meet I will lend it to you - wow, what a nice guy eh......
Paulo.
You are a true Bryson Fan! Another who lends out his books cos people MUST read them!
Ok, now I`m trying to type in my marigolds, so you are all going to have to live without me whilst I wash up!

Mr. Bryson loves Liverpool & its people due to its laid back attitude & friendly nature.
So unlike all the media that always have a go at Liverpool with the typical UN - funny jokes Bryson stands up for my hometown.
He's great.
I read his "Notes From a Small Island" and loved it.
Then I read another one (forget which) and enjoyed that.
And then I read one he'd written crossing America and it bored me so much I never finished it, and I never don't finish a book!
Odd that...
Probably his first, The lost Continent. That was the first one I read. I lent it to a friend who also said he became bored with it, too much driving, he said.
I still love the bit where he used to end up sat in Motel lobbies next to people who had bits of thier face missing, who would, in all probabilty try to talk to him, where he`d discover they also had part of thier tongue missing too  .

I love Bill Bryson !! Was introduced to him by Silky and I can safely say he is possibly the only man she loves more than me LOL . We can both sit and laugh out loud at his books , or frown and shiver a little at the odd touching point or evocative description of a beautiful scene he slips artfully in amongst the jokes. My personal favourite thing is when were curled up on the bed and Silky is reading him , she will reach a favourite passage and read it aloud to me..then sensing my puzzlement she will try (often failing another couple of times) to read it out coherently without it sounding like a series of snorts and giggles . Then finally we will fall laughing together .
Perhaps to bring it more into the board spirit we ought to point out that Mr Bryson is also a stunning aphrodisiac , when it comes to Silky the cliche about laughing her out of the knickers is true , so often a giggle with Bill leads to some passionate times for G ( good man Billy ! ).
Notes from a Small Island is my favourite, " Big Country" hers but we love em all!
" Thats one sick bird ! "
" Dont forget to turn down the counterpane...." did he ever discover what one was ?
It seems on top of your award winning tits you have great literary taste Venus , we salute you .
