With nearly half a million users on the site, there are bound to be some with similar name. You put 'Mal' in search, you come up with over 3,000 options (although that would include a lot with 'male' in their name). Put 'Jags' in and you'll get half a dozen.

how about a rule that deliberate near-cloning of nicks sees an admin change / deactivation / PM / whatever you think is appropriate, cos it does seem that some are deliberately trying to be a bit deceptive? i can't think of specific examples, but like i say we've noticed a few that are almost identicall but for a single letter, number, etc, etc?

That's Ok Neil but what about, if there's already a 'sheffcpl' and another Sheffield couple wanted to be 'sheffcpl', they might decide to be 'sheffcpl2' or whatever number.
Can't they be banned by the IP address instead, so that anyone deliberately doing it to copycat, gets stopped in their tracks?

i know FB, it's a problem? if another guy called neil who happens to live in leeds wants to pick a nick as crap as mine, who am i to argue? ;)
subjective ain't it? some do seem to be deliberate though, but how you decide if it's deliberate or not?

I can't see a problem unless there is a reason to start worrying. Someone did so I banned the account.

Mark once was able to tell that a user had two (very different) usernames by (I think) looking at the IP and asked him to choose the one he wanted to use.

It was me.
I sent a PM because I didn't want to spoil anyone's fun, but could see a potential problem that I don't want to mention in the open forum for fear of "putting ideas in anyones head"
It's not specifically with the similar types as mentioned by freckedbird, more the recent jokey ones over the last couple of days, spawned by the "WTF ??" thread.

Not quite only one, but it does show that anyone can choose any name as long as it hasn't been duplicated.
If people open accounts now, they have to pay, so unlikely that someone would do it maliciously, there again, several current members already have 2 or more legitimate accounts - how should we control those?

Nagged by Jags and Gagged by Jags were set up by the Mighty Mark just to 1) annoy KitKat or 2) to annoy me. There should be another closed account called KatJags which was done when Mark BANNED both Kat and me for the evening when we were having dinner together.
Nagged by Jags was Kat when he came back after a short rest from the site (AGES and AGES ago) and I kept on emailing him snippets of stuff which I knew he couldn't resist replying to!! And then Mark changed it to Gagged by Jags just to annoy Kat again!
