Me and PK spent a wonderfull night last night camping under the stars up on the staffordshire moorlands and as we were on a farm I said we'd be woken up early by the cockeral as they had chickens. Her reply was prehaps they don't have one.
Now I (grew up on around farms) was always under the belief that chickens wouldn't lay eggs if there wasn't a cockeral presant. A quick phone call to my ex farming old man turns up the answer "er I'm not sure" so wtf did I as a child have to put up with a fookin cockeral waking me up in the mornings as we had no desire to breed simply to eat the eggs.
So I know there is farming types out there so could you please enlighten us as to who is right.
Me (i always am) who thinks they need to be there before the chicken will lay and not simply to fertilise.
Or city dweling PK who still thinks milk comes straight from trees bolt

Nope stone cold sober for once honest guv. Just the burning topic in PKHQ as she cooks dinner is the debate as the can chickens lay eggs without a cockerel. I know you'd think a young couple like our selves would have much more pressing things to talk about. lol

Can't help but think a chicken would have made a better job of getting across the road though
Well, I used to help look after a farm in the summer and I used to go and collect the eggs every morning, and I am sure that there wasn't a cockerel. We also collected eggs from the ducks and they were all female too.
Sorry Sheddy, but I think you've been conned.

PS Where the hell's Arti when you need him?
Chickens won't lay fertilised eggs without a Cockeral but they will still lay eggs.
Still don't know which one comes first though...

No Sheddy & Kate, no cock needed. You only need them if the eggs need fertilizing! smile

I did start to wonder when I thought of battery hens but couldn't understand why the hell we had bloody noisy cockeral when there was no need for one. Bloody parents will do anything to get the kids out of bed in the mornings. :lol2:
As for Laird a headless chicken could have crossed that road better than me.....your my new hero lol

Actually, IIRC a group of scientists and philosophers got together recently to thrash out this very point. Their conclusion was that the egg containing the first chicken would come first, with it being made by two of whatever species chickens evolved from. smile

exactly fire.......that was what I spent most of last night trying to explain to the shedster......but he reckons that as I know live in a town near to a city I have no idea about anything to do with the countryside..........(can't work out where he's got this from cos he knows I've always had horses so I can be that much of a city type!!!!!)
but I'm glad to see that as always its me who's right.......hens don't need a cockeral to lay eggs and milk does grow on trees (then it gets sent to tesco).
biggrin

Of course it does hun!!! :therethere: Don't worry they'll be here for you soon bolt
just to make it perfectly clear on all counts here
chickens dont need cockerels to lay eggs they just need a happy enviroment and scrummy food, so decent daylight hours and a little tlc gives you shit loads of eggs
now the next question
what came first the chicken or the egg
it was the egg
dinosaurs were laying eggs years before chickens came along
finally people keep cockerels because they either wish to breed or just have surplus cockerels , they are sent here all the time , either that or they go under the knife and binned......we keep them because we like them strutting round the farm , they remind us of vanilla men in str8 night clubs

No wild birds eggs either hatch, die or are eaten by predators. They dont get a chance to smell :?

So a hen will lay eggs regardless of wether she "needs" to or not? confused
So all them eggs in the supermarket are unwanted by their mums?
What a waste of energy!!! lol

Second question for all you Atenborough types, why do vegans not eat unfertilised eggs which are laid as a matter of course and would otherwise go to wrot in the field?

have you seen many wild chikens lately? chickens have been bred to lay well, not all types lay each and every day, they will keep laying till they have babies , or are ready to hatch , they then sit and produce offspring, no more eggs till babies are ready to move on. in the wild all the chicks get shagged, just like in those night clubs again......
vegans do as they please just like the rest of us, they don need o explain but maybe they dont do unfertilised eggs cos.1 they dont need them...2 hey dont like them.3 they dont like the way most eggs are produced, even free range on mass are produced in conditions that aqre far from perfect for a hen and after a couple of years these free range are slaughtered because they dont produce so many eggs as they get its a bit of an issue for vegans

Where's Ray Mears when you need him! lol

Cos they're from a chickens bottom and they might have bottom remanents on the shell? dunno
So if that's the case, do all vegans not do rimming? :dunno: Or any oral come to think of it? :dunno:
