Living in a small country village Broadband hasn't reached me yet. According to BT it's not worth the trouble and expense to modify the smaller exchanges that handle the relatively few people that want BB in country areas. Sad.

We live in the middle of no where land here.......the nearest village is a mile away.
we all got together and asked if we could have BB........... So they came out and did a survey on how many of us have a PC .................it worked as alot of country people round here work from home
So don't give up hope
yep debs. we've only recently been cabled up here, even tho leeds city centre is only five miles away. the BT website has a register of interest on it somewhere, and soon as 20 people register with a certain postcode, they consider setting up BB at the local exchange viable. that's how it worked here anyways.
still on 56k dial up here, which is positively blistering compared to the 28k thing i had in the ole P166 !
neil x x x ;)
/Venus trundles off because everyone knows that Neil, is in fact, talking about his penis..........again rolleyes

I use broadband at work and sometimes my dial up is quciker. I admit I dont download lots of big files ( no porno movies0
Mike

I find it all very confusing but I do know since I have been using Broadband (about three years ) Life ios so much easier and definitely my PC is faster because I play with graphic files and use graphics software.
I'm no PC Techie but surely there is no way dial up can be quicker than broadband ???????????? Somehow that just doesn't compute.................. does it? what are we all paying for if it isn't quicker and more efficient ?
Really confused now
Judy

judy, it depends on your BB provider.
broadband lines are generally shared, and have contention ratios. i.e. if you're rated at 512Kb, but have a contention ratio of ten users on the same cable, you'll actually only get dial up speeds. it's an extreme example, and it's very unlikely you'll have 10 users sharing a connection, but it's possible depending what service you're getting. generally even tho you're paying for a 512Kb/1Mb connection, realistically you're probably getting lower speeds.
obviously a work connection will have loads of traffic from loads of users down one cable, but even home users share a connection into the exchange.

Well BT gave us a trigger figure of 100 for broadband activation. In a catchment area of 175 houses
Still we managed to get enough signatures. The Scottish Parliement is very keen for everyone to be broadband enabled so they kindly sent us some dolly birds with clip boards for a couple of days.
The result is BT say yes you can have broadband (when they can be bothered!!!)
I think its going to be June this year :bounce: Can't wait.

It depends on your graphics card too and where it draws memory from.
If you can afford it upgrade to a card with its' own processor it makes a hell of a difference.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz lol
oh dear, I used dialup the other day, and found myself having the urge to go out and excersise! scary stuff
Now that's funny stuff rotflmao :rotflmao: :rotflmao:
For those of you lost out there in the backwoods, you can check your likelyhood of getting broadband >> .
Or if you've got broadband (and you're in a really geeky mood) you can test your speeds >> .
