Following on from the other Christmassy thread, what are your fave choons?
...whether traditional, pop hits, one hit wonders....whatever.
Mine are a bit cheesy........
Fairytale of New York....Kirsty MacColl & The Pogues....just the best.
When a Child is Born....Johnny Mathis, gets me welling up, memories of childhood.
Winter Wonderland - the Macy Grey version, her voice just sends shivers up my spine.
(not christmas but..) Happy New Year....Abba, another tear jerker. Not sure if being Scottish I place a lot of emphasis on Hogmanay. To me its a time for fresh starts, new beginnings.

when a child is born...again mentioned by a few people.
lonely this xmas...by mud...spent a very lonely xmas a few years back,
and my all time favourite....white christmas...by bing crosby.....mentioned by no body.......

Well I have the Ratpack xmas CD pack somewhere which is good but thats it as xmas is only 10 weeks away and i dont want to think about it lol.

According to Google they both composed a version of Troika. However, the most interesting aspect for me is the fact that "Troika" actually means "Threesome"!! Is that Freudian or what? :shock:

Nerd alert!
Sorry - but Sassy & Co have rather hit on my 'specialist subject'.....
Yes Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky both composed pieces called Troika. Hnowever, Tchaikovsky's is a piano piece from a series of pieces called 'The Seasons'.
Prokofiev's is from the Lt Kije Suite and refers to a sled drawn by three horses (hence troika or threesome). It also sometimes known as 'sleighride'.

There is a point to this in that the piece by Prokofiev was used as the basis for "I believe in Father Christmas" by Greg Lake (of Emerson Lake and Palmer fame) - one of my favourite Christmas songs.
Glad to see Fairytale of New York getting so many votes as it manages to be festive without being schmalzy.
