Learnt a scary thing yesterday regarding the Human Papilloma Virus which is responsible for cervical cancer...
A website said that 'Using a condom offers only very limited protection from transmission of HPV.'... so I queried it... and was told it was because the HPV is so small it passes through! (gulp)...
So make sure you attend your cervical smear sessions ladies!
Even so condoms are still a good idea.

I don't for a second think that WW was advocating not using condoms rolleyes
on the up side tho they have found a provention for cervical cancer now, which is great news, but even so there are risks in everything we do even using condoms you can still have accidents like them splitting etc.
on a differant note i've never had a smear in my life, cummon you know you all wanted to know that really lol
WW could you possibly provide a reference for that statement about HPV getting through condoms? I only ask because I've just checked with Mrs. DP (who has a PhD in Immunology), and she's pointed out that since HIV is about the same size as HPV, a condom that can stop one should be able to stop the other.
Of course, since HPV can colonise pretty much any part of the body (it being the cause of normal warts as well as genital ones), the danger of infection comes from contact with bits that aren't covered by condoms (like fingers, etc).

NN you really should be offered smears on a regular basis. I had my first one when I went for my post natal check up after my eldest was born 16 years ago and they found slight changes in the cells. This meant that for the rest of the time I had all my bits (ie up until earlier this year) I had to go for regular smears and over the years I had several treatments for pre-cancerous cells. Nobody is immune to cervical cancer and it's really important to have the tests

I suspect that this is the case with the question about HPV being transmitted even when using condoms. A case in point is an ex-gf who got HPV through a one-nighter, even though he used condoms.
If HPV warts are outside the condom and rub against bare skin, then transmission is possible.

But how would you have any idea if you had cancerous cells? dunno I never would have known and may well not have been here to tell the tale if I hadn't had that smear when I was 19. I'm on my soapbox here NN, it's so important :jagsatwork: :jagsatwork:
But NN, CC isn't painful until, often, its too late to do anything about it! Most cancers are like that.
GO I repeat GO!
Sorry to be a bit of a doomsayer but this cancer is highly treatable if caught in time.
go!

I know what your saying but i just think the NHS is busy enough with people who are ill for me to be bothering them with going for test just to make sure i am ok, i'm sure if i did ever get any such thing, which of course we all hope we wont, i will find out soon enough.

And how do you know you aren't ill if you've never had a test? As goodporking says, you don't get symptoms from cervical cancer until it's much too late to do anything about it. Get to the doctors or a well woman clinic. That's what they're there for whip smackbottom

Perhaps when you find out by then it could be too late :dunno:
I had my first Cervical Smear Test this year and I was absolutely terrified about it......in fact I went into the Nurse's Office and promptly burst into tears..... redface
But actually it wasn't painful at all (which had been what I was scared about) and it may have saved my life, luckily I came back all clear but I would rather have caught it sooner rather than later.....I think ALL women should do it just to be on the safe side.....
I've always been really regular with my smears since I was 17 and this year have had three "bad" ones, now I've had to have the biopsy which came back with dodgy results and am now overdue for the six month check. yes to those of you who do know, I have been putting it off and putting it off sad I will admit to being terrified of getting the results back.
NN you must go, any female who is sexually active has an obligation to themselves to do this surely? Cervical cancer is one of the easiest to detect and treat if caught early on.

Working on a hypothetical figure >>>
It costs the NHS £1 to take a smear of the Cervix BUT it will cost the NHS £1000 to treat Cervical Cancer if found. >> Do you see the point in it ??

C'mon NN you don't really believe that do you ?
I would rather 'waste' the NHS 's time by taking advantage of a free service that is provided for all sexually active women, than clog up the oncology department with a serious illness that could easily have been prevented dunno
It takes 10 mins (that's including a chat about general medical wellbeing, blood pressure etc). It's mildly embarrassing (even for a swinger) and slightly uncomfortable surprised BUT (and like mine it's a big one lol) it's ESSENTIAL!
/me climbs down off soap box and apologises to WW for the hijack kiss
Minx x x
ok ok i promise if i ever did get cervical cancer i not clog up the oncology department lol
blimey you all got be dead and buried already
its each to their own really isn't it, if women feel better knowing then they have been for testings then go for it, as minxys pointed out its free so use it if you feel the need, personally i have never felt the need to go, my choice wink

no just wasn't sure if it would offend anyone or not as cancer is a very touchy subject to many, i myself lost a friend to it last year, so i decided to delete it as i'm a nice person really
I'm doin this tiral for the new CC vaccine, and you gotta have a smear and a health check an stuff every few months and you either get the hepetitis vaccine or the CC vaccine obviously they dont tell you which one or else it wouldnt be a decent medical trial, but either way its got to be good. biggrin

you should do as you're told!

See what I have to live with, and don''t have a go at me, I have this argument with her about 4 times a year lol
Right , NN, while I'm a big believer in freedom of choice and all that, me and you need words!!
My attitude used to be just like yours - I had smears when I was like 16- 18 then decided that as there was nothing wrong with me, I didnt need to go, Right?
Wrong. Was badgered into a smear after having my daughter - and the results came back dodgy....... thought 'oh, its just dodgy cells, there;s nowt actually wrong with me'.... and 2 years on I still hadnt gone back to have it sorted,
By the time I did , it wasnt just dodgy cells and the hospital had me striaght in for a biopsy, and then straight in for a loop diathermy (cos I point blank refused to have a partial hysterectomy at 25).
Luckily and thankfully the diathermy was sufficient to remove what they needed to, and i was right to refuse the partial hysterectomy - but i've had smears every 6-12 months since due to the risks, and again thankfully, am still clear. Just had one a couple of weeks ago, and can now reduce it to the normal once-every-3-years.
At the end of the day you have kids. and i wouldnt want to be Paul having to explain to them that their mummy was a stubborn cow!
You know what I'm saying, and i've posted this so other people can hear it too.
I'll hand hold ya if you need it, but for the kids sake dont be stubborn about it! kiss

I must admit to being puzzled too... I phoned the offices of Cancer Screening but no idea as to whom I conversed...
Apparently this PDF document about The Aetiology of Cervical Cancer is full of interesting stuff that your wife might be interested in...

Thanks.
I've had a quick skin through (concentrating on the part about HPV and sexual behaviour). It doesn't mention condom use specificallly, though it does mention that semen can contain HPV and that there's a link between HPV+ semen samples in men and HPV+ cervical samples from their partners. That would suggest that unprotected sex spreads HPV, but we knew that anyway.
By the way, is it a bit weird that when I first saw this thread I thought: 'that sounds odd, I'll just look up genital warts in the copy of The ABC of Sexually Transmitted Diseases on the shelf over there and see if I can find out'?
