Nice to see someone else uses a map! biggrin :D But turning it round! Noooooooo! Maps are meant to face north! You are corrupting their basic existance!

no no no smackbottom :smackbottom: why should the map be facing north when you are driving south or west etc. thats a typical male intellect. You wouldn't drive backwards so why read upside down or sideways............ lol
i can find my way anywhere in the country except sheffield, its an awful place to drive round, through etc...
as for navigation aids.....
i find that the wife is the best solution, she managed to get us to beziers in the south of france with no effort at all, and she cant read a map either. I havent got a clue how she does it.
Can someone tell me please, do this navigation systems need to be fitted and wired into the car or are they simple plug in systems?
Likewise, I'm quite good at navigating as I travel all over UK & Ireland with work.
Most difficult city I find is Birmingham - all those bloody roundabouts

But if you driving South then You're moving down the page! If you turn the page around it will seem like you're driving north. Knowing which direction you're going in is as important to navigation to using a map. Turning a map around is just wrong! You wouldn't turn a book upside down to re-read a paragraph!
I wonder if there is a market for round maps that always face the direction you're traveling in for women drivers!

Some can be simple plug in systems, you can use your PDA's, Smartphone, etc.. basically anything that has Windows NON-OS. er OS.. can be use. TomTom makes a very nice all-in-one package that mounts to your window/dashboard and plugs into the cigar ligher.
Personally i have the maps in the car AS well as TomTom. Since the upgrade to Ver5... It is great. Version3 was good but 5 has much more. I also use the checkPOInt plugin for it to show me where all the speed cameras are, as well as pubs, restuarants, maplins, etc. There are several POI modules that you can download for free to show you your favorite type of places.
Just my coppers worth.. <hangs up the P T Barnum hat>

We agree................turning the map so that you are always travelling from bottom to top of the page certainly makes it easier to tell the difference between left and right, and removes any danger of getting lefts and rights wrong banghead . If hill-walking and mountaineering...........it's the way to use the OS map.
We used to use our faultless road atlas and the Microsoft Auto-Route and it always got us to where we wanted to be, although occasionally the route was interesting.
But now we've got a Garmin Sat-Nav. It is excellent  . We use it in the car and on the bike. And we wouldn't be without it biggrin .

Yep, that's me, too!
me i dont use a map or sat nav , i let crystal worry and use the road signs :P and then when i get to roughtly where im going i take the scenic route and then my way about the town while searching biggrin
Mentioning no names, I once had a navigator who turned the map as we turned corners or went round bends...... but, in all fairness, she got us to where we were going!
Tom Tom 500..... cant live without it........
Total sense of direction failure here..... lol

Does no-one use a map anymore? confused
I drove from Lincolnshire to Kent Yesterday on business - I got there and the bloke I was meeting says "You found it easily have you got Sat Nav?". :? My reaction is - no you gave me directions and I have a map, of course I found it!
If computers stopped working no-one would be able to leave their drive without getting lost! lol
Roger the Dragon cool
P.S. - Watch me get lost going to the next munch and having to ring for directions! redface

It also takes all the stress out of it an all Wishy especially in our case
Busy saving for a car (nearly there) and the first thing I'm gonna get is SatNav.
I can read a map but refuse to wear my glasses to actually plot the darn route, so SatNav it will have to be. I can follow a clear line
