I agree Flower it doesn't bother me in the least that a topic has been done does irk me are terse sarcy comments or just a link to something that was said ages ago. Posts old or new are what keep a forum going.
There isn't a problem with starting threads which haven't been done for a while, no problem whatsoever and as you say, it's what people are saying now that matters, not last year. However, if that very same topic comes up again within a few days or weeks or is still running (which does happen), then I'm pretty sure you would get fed up with a forum full of threads ALL on the one subject, I know I would. It's one of the reasons we keep an eye on the threads, to ensure the forums are fresh and have interesting topics for people to enjoy, not endure.

Let me know how you get on................................................................................................. or not.
Personally, I have no desire to drown in a sea of timewasters and pubic hair.
I think, for the most part the Mod's strike a reasonable balance.
I think the timewaster threads need to be directed to previous posts simply because it's the same old boring whinge but general opinions-wanted threads are not so bad.
I'm quite happy with the way things are run atm.

I`ve just had a thought !! lol
You could have this kinda system in ya local pub.
When somebody strikes up a conversation at the bar and the old fart who lives on the stool at the end of the bar, chimes in with...
"Oh yes !! ....I remember when Charlie and Bob were talking about exactly the same thing last Tuesday"
The Publican can stop your conversation and tell you to go and sit with the old codger while he tells you everything he can remember on the subject !! blink
Alternatively the publican could smack the old boy round the head and say "Shut up ya git !! these people were trying to talk"
Or we could just all plug our chairs into the mains, cool and when someone doesn't like a thread you have written or repeated you can get zapped by the disgruntled masses, :uhoh: dunno whip should make the week more interesting.
Or the easier option just don’t read it :dunno: bolt

I like that idea and we could also do the same with all the Mods and Ops, when they make a decision that someone doesnt like, cause we are dammed if we do, and dammed if we dont!
At the end of the day, whatever happens with old subjects being dragged up, or repeated in a new thread, someone will ALWAYS moan about it, either on here, or via pm to one of the Mods. Its a no win situation.
Everyone wants to read different things, or want the site moderating/Op'ing in one way or another, nothing we or admin will ever do, will please everyone! We ALWAYS try to make a decision that is based on what is best for the forums. There are always threads running that we dont like, or we are not interested in, but unless they are breaking the AUP,or they dont fit with the posting guidelines, which are stickied at the top of the Cafe, we leave them.
Perhaps we should stop members posting or using any other part of the site till they have confirmed that they have read and understood the AUP and posting guidelines and passed a written and verbal test wink

you see, that is just too sensible lol
Whatever lol you can' deny the truth these 'same old ' threads run well biggrin
I hold the belief that most times the topics are ok left alone. Its all subjective i guess. Frustrating for those who have the job of vetting them all over again ad-infinitum granted. But hey, its a choice thing. I don't read what i don't want to read its a priviledge i know but it keeps it fresh for me. That and neutradol

If several people posted a 'typical' timewaster thread within a short space of time of each other, would there be any qualifying criteria to choose to keep one open, all open, selective closing and opening etc?
Probably none. Timewaster threads present little or no overheads for the mods. They are one of several recurrent and benign threads which are more or less self managing, or effectively redundant; because they don't generate extra chatter that the mods have to deal with.
More often than not the 'usual regulars', often that's myself, trot out and make their noise, with some new faces chirping up and adding their pen'orth. But all in all its an exercise in information.
Conversation will develop if there is sufficient interest in the topic. The interest needs to be sustained by intriguing and entertaining developments. People then apply themselves with strokes of genius or hilarious nonsense or disastrous self destruction, or stultifying blind acceptance of all that is going on around them.

That`s a question that could be easily answered by a simple test lol

Sometimes that needs a bit of thought.
When someone new to the forum (dont care how long theyve been on the site) posts, I do try to welcome them even if the post has been done to death over the years. Saying hiya, hello or welcome and trying to help someone who maynot be perhaps familiar with forums or who isnt that confident in joining in is no skin off my nose! If they dont fit that criteria, so what? Bit of mutual respect goes a long way!
I personally believe that making your first post no matter how long youve been here is quite hard, even if it is a moan about summut or tother! Perhaps, someone who makes a first post thinks Ahhh, thats a way of joining in when they have experienced something good or bad.
I only ever knew about the forums when I first joined.... even then it took me nearly a year before I posted on the forum. I rarely look at any other section of the it depends on what you come here for and what words jump out at you first...
Its a big place and you'd be surprised how many people dont know the forums are here (even though I cant see how you miss them lol).
So in my long winded way of saying things...... I dont mind new threads or old. If I want to read it I will, if it doesnt tickle me fancy I wont. Simple!

Thanks you Flower
A slightly different take to this, I participate in quite a few forums, one of which is un-moderated, it happens to be a 4x4 enthusiast site but that's immaterial, what's really annoying is when you log into the cafe to find this:
where to go this weekend
Alternator problems
working on gearbox
problems with my alternator
tire pressures
think my alternator is fecked
suspension upgrade
is this an alternator problem?
lpg conversion
batts wont charge, is it my alternator?
etc, you get the drift. Left unchecked repetitive threads can very quickly begin to fill a forum to such an extent that become a royal pain in the arse. I agree that sometimes people can be too quick to pounce on a thread that has done the rounds previously but on the whole I think the balance here is about right. Although it hates me, the search button is your friend ........ or so i'm told redface
good topic though

What you said all made pefect sense until your last statement! Most people have never read the AUP cos it has not got any pictures attatched!
I had a mate once who used to moan about everything, and we used to say to him that if he won the lottery one week he would still moan, because he would have wanted to win the previous week as it was more money! As I have said before there lacks consistancy on here, as one mod will think one thing, and another will think something else. That is called having an opinion...and thank God we all have different ones eh?

My idea about the 'oral' test was purely for selfish reasons though
Quote by kentswingers777

 be a pretty boring world if we all liked the same thing.
As for differing views on what should or should not stay, yes there will be difference in styles and thoughts, we are human and all look at things differently but if there is ever anything we are not sure about, which is borderline on breaking the AUP, or, which is probably more relevant to this thread, anything that goes against the site posting guidelines, then we do actually speak to each other and ask for each others opinion.
So yes, we do have different views on things but we all do it for the same reason - the good of the site and its members (plus it saves Sarge perving for hours and hours on end) lol
