There isn't a problem with starting threads which haven't been done for a while, no problem whatsoever and as you say, it's what people are saying now that matters, not last year. However, if that very same topic comes up again within a few days or weeks or is still running (which does happen), then I'm pretty sure you would get fed up with a forum full of threads ALL on the one subject, I know I would. It's one of the reasons we keep an eye on the threads, to ensure the forums are fresh and have interesting topics for people to enjoy, not endure.

Or we could just all plug our chairs into the mains, :twisted:and when someone doesn't like a thread you have written or repeated you can get zapped by the disgruntled masses, :uhoh:

should make the week more interesting.

Or the easier option just don’t read it :dunno:

If several people posted a 'typical' timewaster thread within a short space of time of each other, would there be any qualifying criteria to choose to keep one open, all open, selective closing and opening etc?

When someone new to the forum (dont care how long theyve been on the site) posts, I do try to welcome them even if the post has been done to death over the years. Saying hiya, hello or welcome and trying to help someone who maynot be perhaps familiar with forums or who isnt that confident in joining in is no skin off my nose! If they dont fit that criteria, so what? Bit of mutual respect goes a long way!
I personally believe that making your first post no matter how long youve been here is quite hard, even if it is a moan about summut or tother! Perhaps, someone who makes a first post thinks Ahhh, thats a way of joining in when they have experienced something good or bad.
I only ever knew about the forums when I first joined.... even then it took me nearly a year before I posted on the forum. I rarely look at any other section of the it depends on what you come here for and what words jump out at you first...
Its a big place and you'd be surprised how many people dont know the forums are here (even though I cant see how you miss them).
So in my long winded way of saying things...... I dont mind new threads or old. If I want to read it I will, if it doesnt tickle me fancy I wont. Simple!

Perhaps we should stop members posting or using any other part of the site till they have confirmed that they have read and understood the AUP and posting guidelines and passed a written and verbal test

What you said all made pefect sense until your last statement! Most people have never read the AUP cos it has not got any pictures attatched! ?

That is called having an opinion...and thank God we all have different ones eh?

A slightly different take to this, I participate in quite a few forums, one of which is un-moderated, it happens to be a 4x4 enthusiast site but that's immaterial, what's really annoying is when you log into the cafe to find this:
where to go this weekend
Alternator problems
working on gearbox
problems with my alternator
tire pressures
think my alternator is fecked
suspension upgrade
is this an alternator problem?
lpg conversion
batts wont charge, is it my alternator?
etc, you get the drift. Left unchecked repetitive threads can very quickly begin to fill a forum to such an extent that become a royal pain in the arse. I agree that sometimes people can be too quick to pounce on a thread that has done the rounds previously but on the whole I think the balance here is about right. Although it hates me, the search button is your friend ........ or so i'm told
good topic though
