Just starting out.... how not to get in too deep ?

Hi everyone,
I've only just joined, although I've been lurking for a while. I've had one sucessful meetup under my old name / advert, and have finally plucked up the courage to return ! I know that it is very hard to for a single male to get any responses, but can anyone give me some advice about a good level for newbie encounters. confused:
I guess what I'm trying to say, in a rather long winded way, is that munches and clubs are a bit too much for me at this stage. I'm not here to "get laid" or just go for the first thing that comes my way. I'm perfectly willing to settle in and take my time.
In conclusion, has anybody got any tips for the type of stuff its good to start out with ?
Thanks all !

Welcome to the asylum.
You know who's running the asylum, don't you ????
I'm not really looking for things to get replies. Thats not really me, I'm more just wanting to ease myself in gently. I guess I'll get to know the asylum better over the coming months .
sad
you say your not ready for a munch yet but in my opinion munches are perfect for newbies, its just like going out to the pubs with ya m8s, i'm sure you have done that a million times? theres no sex they are just social meets with like minded people, just go relax have a drink and a chat.

^^^ What she says !^^^ Good advice! smile
I would say mate you just need to take your own advice. However don't rule out a munch, or a mini munch. They are social, and can be very enjoyable, Relax here in the cafe, chat like this in a few of the threads, don't worry if you post sensibly no one bites smile Then when you have a few peeps you seem to be talking to who are going to a munch, pop your name down. This way you know a person who will be there, and this can help a lot with pre munch nerves.
A new thing on the bigger munches is having peeps come out of the munch to meet new people, help you ease in. I know they seem daunting (I only did my first one a year ago), but they are great once you relax into them.
So just enjoy yourself, you have no standards to live up to but your own. Be yourself and let your mind wander gently through what you want until you are sure...
Hi takingitslow,
Welcome to the forum. It's fine to have a curious mind, but might I suggest that a trawl through old threads in the cafe forums, and also the advice section (see the menu to the left) might answer a few of your questions.
It's perhaps unfortunate for you that people here have suspicious minds, but journalists ARE known to frequent this site anonymously in search of a good scandal, and someone like you, coming along and posing searching questions on their first day here, sets alarm bells ringing among the regulars here, especially as you have said very little about yourself except that you are very cautious!
Hope you enjoy it in here.
Mike.
If this chap IS a journalist, he's not a very good one, to arouse so much suspicion.
But taking up the point, I do feel that SH members are much too wary of the Press. They treat us like monsters and perverts only because they don't understand us, and we make tittilating copy for readers who don't understand us. Shouldn't we be changing that, rather than running away from it?
We're rather in the position that gays were 50 years ago..... and gays became acceptable because they educated the public to stop thinking of them as "queer"; to regard an alternative lifestyle as a respectable option.
Seriously: the Press aren't going to be at all interested in individual swingers, unless they are celebs, politicians, vicars, teachers, or senior policemen.
There is a real argument for answering their questions frankly, and being less afraid.
^^^^^ id have to agree with that^^^^^^

Not quite true, I'm afraid, not in the local press anyway:

The poor woman in the local paper case was a teacher..... as I said, teachers (or others involved with kids) are always at risk, so long as the -scare continues - along with the other categories I mentioned.

Gosh, should I be worried then? confused

Whoops, sorry, I didn't notice you had included teachers on your list. You could add social workers, all working with children, and others with responsible positions in the public sector, and that would then include a fair number of the regulars in SH.

Hang on a minute, what has being a teacher who swings, got to do with paedophiles?
Absolutely nothing but unfortunately this is the real world we live in.

And the very fact that some of the members of this forum belong to jobs included in your list, is a very good reason why we are suspicious of people being journalists and touting for info! We ban journalists as soon as we suss them... some are blatent, some less so. We will continue to protect members on this forum by banning anything that looks suspect. Speaking about swinging in the media is fine --- go ahead if you want to do that, but having people's lives slung all over the papers without their consent is a different matter entirely.
Nuff said rolleyes
What I find really annoying is that the same type of newspapers publish sensationalist headlines about swingers, and then on dear Deidre pages are happy to print stories of the very same topics.
But hey that’s why I choose not to buy the crap.
