have worked in a theatre for a few yrs n have seen doddie on numourous occasions..break down of a doddie show.... doddie does 20 mins of old stand up.....followed by half hour of 5 kids dressed up in 'pre war' clothes singing roll out the barrel etc etc etc....pretending to be the diddie men....doddie comes back on..another 20 minutes of crap un funny standup.....followed by an hr of some obscure scouse comedian whos even more ancient than doddie n even more unfunny.....doddie returns 15 mins later some old old guy come on n does a routine that involves him drawing pictures on a flip chart n the audience have to guess who it is hes drawing n trust me hes no bloody tony hart..followed by n this is the highlight of the night lol....a piano is wheeled on stage n his burd comes on to play that for about 45 minutes (she looks like a hinge n bracket reject-most peeps resort to the bar at this point).... then its the interval usually about half ten by this point!
2nd half.....same kids pretending to be diddie men in over sized clothes bought form oxfam sing for about an hr....doddie for hmm about 20 mins....ballooon dancers usually 3 fat blokes who ya really wouldnt want the balloon to 'pop' at the wrong moment.....midnight most of the audience have either left or fell asleep...staff are jus thinking stfu....doddie goes on n on till about half one in the morning n trust me thats on a good night,,have worked a doddie show n got home at 4am
On that note enjoy ya night

there you go max

Thanks Star, I have seen him quite a bit on TV. One of the Channels did a documentary on him at 80 which contained quite a bit of his stage act plus the often repeated "An Audience with....."

Ken Dodd gets right on my tits and always has done. I cant think of anyone I'd rather not see more .......
Oh there was Tommy Cooper, I hated him too. I was watching TV the night he collapsed and died on stage. As he walked on stage I said "I hate him" and then he collapsed. I was only little and was determined that I'd killed him! lol

Tommy Cooper was one of THE master's in my opinion - he was someone who could make you laugh just by a look. His routine with changing hats is one of the all time classics. I remember when he collapsed serenely back through the curtains as he was dressed in a long cloak and I like many thought it was part of the act.
As I look at modern day comedians and compare them with past greats, there are so few today that match the greats of the past and I think political correctness has a lot to do with it. I am not referring to smuttiness - indeed Carry On films degraded to smuttiness in the 1970's and those later films do not compare favourably with those from the 1950's & 60's.
Arthur Askey, Eric Sykes, Spike Milligan, Morecombe & Wise, Jimmy Edwards, Max Wall, Frankie Howerd, Dave Allen were all master's of their art and apart from Sykes who is still with us, the World is a sadder place without them.

You've got the bum shot and the offer of a nibble what more can anyone ask for.
Southlincs thats quite an eclectic list but I reckon i have chuckled at all of them at leats once and oh god I love Dave allen.
i am not a lover of ken dodd to be honest but he as a comdian has made his money from being " clean ". by that i meen unlike todays comedians that use smut to make there names by.
morecombe and wise, dick emery, tommy cooper to name just a few comics of that era who made us laugh without the need for foul language and smut.

a classic.

Each to their own, if we all liked the same things the world would be a very boring place. Personally, I love carry on films but none of the others mentioned flicked my switch.
Well I took my daughter in the end. It started off with Doddy doing about 90 minutes of stand up which was beautifully funny. My daughter opined "his jokes are worse than yours but he is hysterically funny". I even laughed out loud, causing my daughter some concern as that sound is rarely heard. There was then a support act, half an hour of ukulelee playing, which I rather enjoyed but then I have always been a bit of a closet Formby fan. Doddy came back on stage and somehow the atmosphere had changed and rather than rolling in the aisles I was just interested in the stage craft, he is very very good at what he does. We stayed another 40 minutes and getting tired hungry and thirsty and finding the material a little tedious we decided to call it a night. Gawd knows what time it finished, we left at 10pm, 3 hours after the show started and there hadnt been an interval thus far.
All in all not a bad way to spend an evening in lladudno but I dont think I would go again and if I did I would probably go into training for it and take a picnic.

Star,
in that case you never saw Dodd during the late 80's / early 90's on his regular night club dates.
knowing the audience were all over 18 (21 at venue we saw him at a few times) then unlike his Theatre shows which Wip mentioned, his material was aimed at the adult audience rather than the the television/theatre.
Format was all Dodd from circa 11pm to 00:30, then 20-25 minute break, then circa 1am until circa 02:30.
Must say the 1st one at the venue people were unsure and only 50%-60% full, thereafter a sell out on his next 4 visits
