Thanks for all your experiences... I think I'm going to give it a go and see how it goes... need to get my implant taken out and hope that they can do the coil at the same time. My body has been rammed with chemicals since I was 15. I tried going natural for a while after I came off the pill... uber fail!! lol Here's hoping this works!
I had a plain coil when I was about 30 and had already had 3 large babies naturally. Insertion didn't hurt at all, and periods were not a problem, but when it was removed it turned out I already had an ectopic pregnancy that was consequently missed until my tube ruptured.
All was sorted but I was advised not to have another coil. I went on to have another 2 (even larger babies), and following their births, my periods became unmanageable - long lasting and so heavy for the first 2 days it got to the point where I couldn't risk leaving the house. I went on the mini-pill but I still had heavy periods and had at least some bleeding almost constantly the whole month.
Six months ago, I was recommended to try the Mirena coil, and as hubby had had the snip, ectopic pregnancy was no longer an issue. Fitting was uncomfortable but not painful (I had it done at the same time as a smear test too) and since then my periods have gradually evened out (although not terribly regular - and tend to start just before a meet). They are still quite heavy and last 7-10 days but no really heavy days to keep me at home. I still get spotting at the drop of a hat, but overall it will do until I can find the time (and persuade my doctor) to have a hysterectomy.
Oh and my PMT has improved as well. Still get it but nowhere near as bad. Well mostly :taz:
I don't envisage an ectopic pregnancy will be an issue for me cause I do believe you actually have to have sex for that to happen. lol
There seem to be more pros than cons generally though... will keep you posted!
This has been really interesting reading. Obviously, I don't have any direct experience of the Mirena coil, but several doctors (mostly men) have been trying to persuade Sappho to have one for some years. Firstly because they thought it would be easier (for me) than a vesectomy and then as a suggested solution to the really nasty gynaecological problems she has had since Will Jr was born. To spare her embarrassment I won't go into details - unless she wants to comment on this thread herself.
However, I have to say that I was (unpleasantly) surprised at the doctors' attitudes on this subject.
The first time was when one of the GPs at the surgery (who happened to be Australian) tried to talk me out of having the vasectomy:
(Imagine this in an antipodean accent) "What do you want to do that for? It doesn't always work, it's painful, it can get infected. Get the woman to do something about it. Get her to wear a Mirena coil they last five years and she won't even know it's there!"
This is the same doctor, who kept 'forgetting' to send her for a scan when we were convinced she was pregnant first time round. Afer one of her friends phoned the hospital and made an appointment direct, she took the printout (which clearly showed TWO babies) back to the doctor. His reaction? "Oh right, twins. Well, pregnancy kind of looks after itself doesn't it." mad :x :x
All the other doctors at the practice were excellent but, needless, to say we used to go to great lengths to avoid this one.
Reading most of the posts on here I am very glad that Sappho didn't go for the Mirena coil - though I do wish that someone could help her somehow. confused

I went to see my doctor a couple of months ago as my periods have been getting heavier and heavier and more irregular since I had my last child 7 years ago. He suggested the coil but as I have already posted the issues I had the last time it was fitted, I'm sure you all understand why I refused.
He sent me to see a Gynaecologist and I am going into hospital in June to have a procedure where they burn the lining of the womb away so that it cannot thicken and therefore your periods either disappear completely or are much lighter than before.
I know it sounds a bit gruesome but it is done as a day surgery and I have been assured that although a little uncomfortable afterwards, it is no worse than a period pain.
It is of course irreversible and so is only suitable if you have finished your family.
It is called Endometrial Ablation and so if things are that bad maybe its an option?
I'll let you know how it goes.
Finally I got to the top of the waiting list... I'm pretty miserable now though.
Can someone please tell me that I'll stop feeling ill soon please? dunno

Did you have that done? I had it done and it made very little difference to me.

Almost four months later and I'm giving it up as a bad joke.
Made an appointment to have it removed on Tuesday.
Not stopped bleeding and at some point, every day since I had it put in, I've had pain like someone has stabbed me. They said to give it six months to settle... I'm done.
Next suggestion? :dunno:
