Oy you norfeners.
Do you still make yorkshire pudding that fills the entire plate?
As I recall they are a meal on thier own.
Bleeding nice though.
i will call my aunt bessy and ask her! lol
i make diddly yorkshire puds.. but ASDA do their own brand ready cooked ones that are massive.. only about 70 p each too!!!!
We always had ordinary sized Yorkies with dinner.
When we visited our rellies in Sheffield they always served them with gravy before dinner. I hated that! I always kept some aside to have with my main meal.
I'm assuming that having your Yorkshire puds beforehand is because they are relatively cheap to make and would fill you up so you wouldn't mind not getting much meat and veg after????
Who does that then - puds before dinner? I'm from the top end of North Yorks and I'd never heard of it till we wnet to Sheffield.
Mmmmm.. that was the best bit about Sunday dinner at my dads parents place. Yorkshire folk, they were. From Leeds.
"Starter" was always a plate sized Yorkshire pud, full of gravy and an onion. Feckin class!!
hmmm we always had a little yorkshire pud with our main meal.. never had one seperately.
I think its the law........they have to have plate size yorkshires so that there's leftovers for the whippets and pidgeons!!!
in truth it is an economic thing. my grandma gawd rest her soul used to make 3 courses of yorkshires, savoury large yorkshire with gravy for starter. yorkshires with whatever meat and veg she could afford. yorkshire pudding with syrup for dessert!! made me passionate about the misuse and abuse of yorkshires has even led to arguements between me and my lovely partner.
Many years ago when I first went up norf. I had for dinner a plate size yorkshire pudding, followed by a great heap of meat and veg and a huge pudding.
I was only 16 at the time, and could eat for britain.

well Marya, they have strange ways in North Yorkshire you know. it is of course the done thing to have about 4 yorkie puds ((( the little ones mind, we don't hold with plate sized ones here you know. they're a perversion invented by pub grub! ))) possibly with a slice of season pudding, covered in onion gravy, as a starter while the meat rests a bit!
and as for you WBB, you're from the other side, so what would you bloody know about it? eh? pah!
so that's yer definitive answer on the whole yorkshire pud issue!

I used to be good at making yorkshire puddings all nice and crispy and sunk in the middle??
Seem to not be able to do it anymore I think I might be trying to hard, are you meant to leave the batter for a wee while before pouring into the baking tray thingy??
My wee granny used to show me how to do all this stuff my mum cant cook, still cant even make frozen chips?? Mad woman?
How gross, frozen chips. Arrrrrgh
Can't of any thing else apart from brussel sprouts thats horrid.
cabbage and turnips, as much as i like my greens them aint included and what the fuck is the deal with haggis!! Rabbie Burns your poetry aint good enough to convince me to eat that shit!! Stick to plate of mashed totties and lots of whisky for burns night thatll do me!
cooking frozen chips  ??? whatever next confused .. EVERYONE knows that chips come in little black boixes that u open the lid and put in the microwave for 2 mins.. dont they?? lol  lol
Not only do they still make them, they make them in the finest form imaginable - filled with curry
YUM biggrin:D:D
If you've got a Safeway local to you, you'll soon be able to experience them again (although not curry filled  ) Morrisons do them in the caff.
judy judy judy
i must confess, there was once a time when a fierce pride in my Yorkshire heritage would by now have had the passion rising within me, and i would no doubt have demanded satisfaction from you for the disgraceful slur on the noble dead of the House of York.
i remember there was once a time when Leeds could truly claim to be the Premier City Of The North. Manchester may have had two football teams, but it only took one from Leeds to beat them both and win the Premiership. you may have had Selfridges, but we had Harvey Nicks. you may have had the Hacienda and Stone Roses, but we had . . . . erm . . . . well anyway, i digress.
alas those halcyon days are gone! it is with regret that i must now say, that all good things come from the North West, and i find myself strangely drawn across the Pennines, to take in the soft waters of the Manchester rain.
it's a sad story i know, but there it is!

I love yourshire puds... Aunt bessies are probably the best ready made ones, but I've yet to find a packet mix that gets close to the real thing
The most important thing is use butter, not lard or fat or oil and pre-heat the tray till its smoking (240 degs +)
A very quick Idea is fry 6-8 sausages, make batter mix (add some parsley/sage etc and seasoning to the mix) pour into a 12" pre-heated and buttered pizza dish, cook as for a normal tray of puds but allow a little longer else it will be soggy.
Sorted, cheap, filling and damn quick to make.... I'm one of thoes cooks that likes to take a little time as possible cooking... can't be arsed to be like my mum spending 4 hours in the kitchen making sunday lunch, i'm a 10 mins to prepare, shove in oven/on stove, come back 40 mins later, put on plate, eat kinda guy :-)

Talking about fish and chips, as we were'nt.
When I was a young whippersnapper, knee high to a grasshopper.
The chip shop use to sell us scraps, for a penny (very old money).
You know the bits of batter left in the fryer, and bits of chips.
Best place to be on a cold wintery night, was inside the chip shop with its coal fired chip cooker.
Loverlyyyyy

Despite being half Yorkshire (... my dark side  ), I've only ever had massive dinner plate sized Yorkshire Pudd & onion gravy once, years ago when I was doing the Pennine Way. Only one pub did it, along the entire route through Yorkshire... very disappointed. sad
My Mum used to do a big one with a roast, but we each got a piece from it, so it wasn't the same.

Do we or have we in general got the time to cook fancy meals, like beans on toast for instance.
No seriously. like a slap up three course dinner with wine and all the trimmings.
or
Is it now the requisite to pop into a superstore and pickup what's cheap and quick?
Answers on a postcard please.

for the best homemade yorkshire puds you have to have the fat in your baking tin smokin before you put the mix in .
you should try them after your dinner with a trickle of golden syrup over them mmmmm
my granny and grandad had them like that after sunday dinner for as long as i can remember :violin: cant believe im on a swingers forum talking about yorkshire puds lol

Bar the vegtables and meat the amount of self cooking products in the big stores is getting smaller and smaller each year and they only stock things like cake making products according to the seasons... so it can be quite dificult to cook a "xmas" cake in the middle of summer.
Even tho the bigger stores include things like a bakery, butchers, fishmongers... they really are not a patch on the real thing, basically they are just bigger lumps of the same meats they have pre-cut and packaged; bread wise they cant beat the real stuff either its all to "automated"
winge of the day :-)
