Over weight

Jaq talks a lot of sense. I think I've done untold metabolic damage to myself after decades of following expert 'advice' regarding dieting. I was diagnosed as now having metabolic syndrome (Syndrome X or insulin resistance) a few years ago ... this led to developing type 2 diabetes and means that I can't just adhere to the 'cal in cals out' mantra if I want to lose weight. My body doesn't metabolise carbs in the way it should - instead, much of the starchy carbs I eat are converted straight to fat around my mid section. So I could lay down fat quite nicely on a low calorie, carb heavy diet (such as slimming world's 'green days').
Instead, I have to eliminate all white, refined starchy carbs from my diet and keep the fat content low if I want to lose any weight. I'm doing this at the moment and have lost a mere 9lb in three weeks despite the strictness of this diet. Apparently, many people have this syndrome and aren't even aware of it. If you seem to gain weight easily, put it on primarily on your stomach and find it difficult to lose again, you may have metabolic syndrome.
if anybody is interested in reading about cholesterol try this link.

i can also dismiss the eat cholesterol have high cholesterol

Adding to this, can I just dispel one of the cholesterol myths for the folks who don't know.
High cholesterol is not, in the main, totally as a result of what you eat. The body produces cholesterol itself to make, amongst other things, testosterone. Short of taking statin-type drugs etc it isn't really possible to reduce the amount of cholesterol your body produces. So the only other option is to attempt to reduce outside sources. This is why people are advised to reduce cholesterol in the food they eat.
Just thought I'd mention it :jagsatwork:
Also high cholesterol can be hereditary! so nothing to do with food at all in that sense
As one who had tried hard to keep a reasonably 'normal' body size, I am often dismayed by the number of men who sport huge bellies....beer, probably, but must be eating disorders as well. I don't find them attractive, even as a rampant bi-guy, so what the ladies think of this extra bulkage I shudder to think. Smoking has now become unfashionable: Isn't it time overweight became the same?

There have been overweight people in every era of history and there are overweight people in every culture on the face of the planet (even those with a distinct lack of junk food outlets). So it's hardly a 'fashion'.
Also, for every body type, there is a person who appreciates that body type. It may not be your 'bag' - that's your choice - but I think it's a bit unfair to slate a whole section of society based on your personal preference.

I love Jaq's advice, it all makes sense and is healthy and sensible... I just have to apply it now.

I'm sat here watching crap day time tell but 'you are what you eat' has come on. It got me thinking at what point to you look in the mirror and say 'I'm over weight'?
Are people over weight because they have a low self esteem or is it that they are not bothered.
I'm a self confessed comfort eater so my weight yoyo's and the more I put on the more I hate how I look but I eat more because I'm down.
When should it be enough? or am I just being silly and be happy no matter how big my bum and tummy get?
Does anyone feel the same way are you and comfort eater like me?

I think most people are bothered about how they look. Being overweight nowadays has become a big issue because like smoking, it can be dangerous to your health.
I am a smoker but not overweight, so I cannot give up the dreaded weed, so I can imagine how hard it is to give up food.
But I have to say that in my opinion being overweight is a food issue, in as much as how much food one eats. We all know about the obese problems out there, especially in kids. I feel that what kryps says does make sense, but a lot of people are well overweight because of how much they eat and then no smokers if you want to quit or lose weight, you have to make sacrifices and face the truth as to why you are the way you are.
All the " big " people I know admit it is simply because they eat too much, and too much of the wrong kind of food. Too many takeaways. lol

Apparently each body type appeals to at about 3% of the population (don't ya just love Cosmo?), what gets on my nerves is when you have guys who resemble beer barrels telling women half thier size that they could do with losing a few pounds.
But in reply to the OP (hello hopalong biggrin ) everyone has 'fat days', the times when you feel like shit and hit the fridge in the hope that you'll feel better for a lump of chocolate - I don't care if you're a size 6 or 26, it happens. For quite a while I just didn't buy anything I knew I'd sit and eat.. if all you have are oatcakes to sit and munch on you're soon going to get board of eating to make yourself feel better because, with the best will in the world, an oatcake will never hit that spot. So you find something that does, that doesn't involve food. I know it's easier said than done but if I can do it, anyone can.

I do the same - no treats in the house at all.
My son helps - not that he intends to - but every time I fork out some scarce cash for a packet of biscuits or such like, he very kindly scoffs it for me before I get to it. Usually in about 48 hours. I haven't bought decent cereal for months.
I tried breakfast yesterday - I found yogurt keeps me going without triggering the munchies mid-morning.

I get rice cakes in for that very reason ... nothing less appealing than a polystyrene tile masquerading as food!! smile
I have thought long and hard about making this post and decided I would, NOT for sympathy, but perhaps it may help even 1 person to change. 21 years ago I had a child and from day 1 of the pregnancy I put on masses of weight. When he was born I was like the side of a house still and so began years of yo yo dieting but nothing made any difference long term. Gradually over the years I started being diagnosed with obesity illnesses, high blood pressure, asthma and even had a pulmonary embolism. Then came diabetes, which gradually became insulin dependent. Still I took no notice really of my weight apart from a few half hearted attempts to get it off. Then I developed lympoedema which is painful and debilitating and made it difficult to get around at all particularly walking and hence more weight went on. Then I was asked if I wanted gastric banding which I said yes to, as things were getting desperate by now. Then a few weeks ago I got a blood test reading that says my kidney function is deteriorating rapidly. Am still being tested for that but if it is so then the gastric banding will probably definitely be out and I wont have many options left. As I said I'm not telling this to get sympathy but in the hopes that it makes people stop and think a bit more carefully about obesity before it is too late. Best of luck to all dieters, but remember that fad diets only work short term ... change of life style is the only way.
Thanks for sharing that buckingfabe.
I do hope things improve for you.

Thats my problem...
I too am a smoker and have seriously thought about hypnotism(sp) in a bid to give up smoking but a really worried that my appitite will increase if I give up the fags....
According to the charts so many people place so much faith in I should be 13 stone...
Shireen saw me when I had glandular fever and weighed 13 stone and I looked malnourished and desperately ill...
At present I weigh about 17 stone and do have a bit of a belly redface but reckon if I lost 2 stone would be about right....

Where i live there is a very high rate of over weight people, even more so kids but theres at least two take aways on every bloody street corner, you can see the connection straight away, on the way home from school a lot of mums will nip into the chippy and get their kids a bag of chips to walk home with, when i was a kid we got a bag of chips as a treat and that was our tea not a inbetweener to walk home with, as i said in a earlier post we really are passing on our bad eating habbits to our children and setting them up badly for later life, most over weight parents will have over weight kids who will pass on their eating habbits to their kids, it took me many years of being over weight to realise this but when my daughter started coming home from school crying because she was being bullied about her weight i knew things had to change, i though nothing of feeding my kids on crisps and chocolate/biscuits for tea and i actually though giving them all this 'nice food' made me a good mum, since i joined weight watchers and lost my weight i stopped buying junk, going to take aways etc and the kids just naturally lost weight too, fact is their weight was my fault they was kids they ate what i gave them so in reflect all the bullying my daughter stuffered was my fault too as i was making her over weight and because i was so over weight it seemed ok for her to be. We are what we eat as so to speak but as a parent we don't only have our own health to think about, i just glad i finally realised and broke the chain smile
just seen an article in todays' paper saying that beer-bellies are linked to impotence.....must admit that i'm amazed, as an enthusiastic SH gallery voyeur, just how many guys have unhealthy looking stomachs...perhaps thats' why so few are wearing condoms, just firing fat-belly blanks? Come on, fellas, get in shape, get that spunk potent again!!

Actually to be technically pedantic. Increased fluid intake will increase the volume and density of sperm. Dehydration is the enemy of the heavy cummer.
A pint of water 30 mins before a male's orgasm can help increase the average ejaculate volume.
Having said that the alcohol would be counter-productive but life's a big compromise ain't it? smile
