Ping-Pong threads.........

If you want to take a look at a Ping-Pong type thread that works (and is interesting and takes a modicum of intelligence) then take a look at the "Great Quotes from History" thread. Some guy has tried to hijack it a few times but he's been largely ignored and the people that are playing the game are having a good time.
A word association type Ping-Pong thread serves very little purpose other than boosting individual post counts. If it wasn't for the post count there'd be very little said about the demise of these threads.
The post count is a very useful tool to some people and I wouldn't like to see it disappear but when I see threads started with "I've reached the big 50" I do tend to despair. I despair even more when I see people congratulating them for it.
I don't mind Ping-Pong type threads as long as they have a bit of thought behind them. Maybe the moderators should delete the one word, inane, repetetive, bland, thougtless, childish ones as soon as they see them?
Steve
End of day Steve you guys have to moderate the site, that means the time taken to keep an eye on fast moving, one line per post threads, has to be taken into account IMHO. If they becoming an issue for you (as in the mods) then you should have the option to lock them for that reason.
Just an opinion.

Steve mate :-
Two questions for you >>>>
What usefull purpose does the"" post count"" fullfil ??
Is there an Admin reason for keeping it ?
I for one am not interested in a post count and do not keep notches on the edge of my keyboard as a record of such.

I use the post count as a tool when I'm organising a munch or similar. I regard these events as open to all that are active on the site and the post count gives me a good idea of whether the person is active or not. I don't restrict their being active to just posting on the forum because there are people that will exclusively use the photo-ads section or the chatroom but it's a good indicator. Gut feeling comes into it as well. If it didn't then Rainbows wouldn't have attended the Notts munch which would have been a loss all round.
I don't think there is an admin reason for keeping it. The site administrator might be able to tell you different but I don't know of any.

Steve :-
Thanks mate
I had no other reason for asking other than curiosity lol

But if there were no post counts there would be no threesomes!!!

Yes there would............it just wouldn't be visible on the actual post. It would still be visible on your profile (I think) and would still count towards your threesome buddies.

And now I`m back! Life can`t get much better can it Steve?! :bounce:  rotflmao

Alexandra and Mark fantastic idea, don't ponder too long, just do it! :P
Personally, I prefer to see it where it is. It saves having to jump into profile to check it. I can see at a glance whether it is a newbie's first post or whether they have made 50 that day and alternatively, they could have been here for ages and only posted twice! Does it affect my opinion of the post? Probably. But only for extremes, ie low/high post counts. It helps me give a more rounded answer to the post.
Mal

Mark
May I be the first to say thanks
Fred
oooops >>>> a bit premature maybe lol
Personally I prefer to keep the post count for m uch the same reasons as mal....
Also as I use a browser other than IE when I run my pointer over the status bar above the avatar it tells me nothing whereas IE would display what level had been attained..
Just my two-pennorth...
smile
Why not keep it but instead of displaying the number replace them with asterisks. That way you could at a glance know whether someone is in the units, tens, hundreds etc, which helps Mal's point. But it will stop people anticipating milestones because they'll have happened before you know it mostly.
Trouble is you'll have a load of questions about 'What are theses asterisks by the side of my name?'

Mal has a point. I too glean something from it when it comes to the extremes

As the forum's most prolific poster... I take it you all think I'm an extremist redface surprisedops:
wink
For the record, I don't care a jot whether the post count stays visible or becomes "hidden". As long as it is still there the ones that care about it will keep going into the memberlist and checking where they are in the "league table". That's up to them, personally I'm too busy typing posts to care about the actual numbers I'm clocking up! There are times when the post count is relevant, maybe. Perhaps if someone posts somethig really daft, I (as a mod) look at their post count AND join date to ascertain whether they should have known better, or whether they need a kick in the nuts, for example. As a user (not as a mod), I don't care that much about it. I've met and shagged people with a post count of zero, and I don't look at post counts when replying to threads as a rule.
Nowt else to say on this, I really don't care
One more thing..... why DO people care so much about post counts anyway???
wink
Mark
Now can I say ""Thank You"" ?????

OK, well I'll make the change now then, but shhhhh, don't tell a soul, and let's see who's first to start a thread about it rotflmao

Why do I get the feeling that later tonight we're going to see a thread saying something along the lines of "Where has my post count gone?"" lol

OK, mal, how's that? smile
redface surprisedops:
Someones nicked my post count
Right, that's the post count gone, now for the next thing: what's the point of having a "location" space under the member nic if so many use it just for jokes? And usually not very funny ones at that! (yours is an exception Rainbows). Can we abolish that as well Mark? rolleyes
Mike.
smile
Now that Mark has done the deed can we invite him to open up the thread "Where has my post count gone"
And let this thread then, be the first step to Universal Peace and Swinging Brotherhood.
"Who would post a Thread like this" Mark it's over to you wink
Fred
Jokes as locations? Never!
Button Moon really is a place isn't it..... I've seen it on the telly! rotflmao
True it is still in the profile of the user in question but....
It is a bit long winded to keep going into a profile to see how many times a user has posted since they/he/she joined....
The next step should be the status bar......It serves no purpose for me as I use firefox and for some reason it doesn't show anything when I run my pointer over it..
In the absence of an imediately visible post count then thats the next thing some will be trying to improve at any cost dont you think confused:

This is because it uses the alt attribute which on IE shows up as a tooltip. To get the same thing on alternative browsers, the text can be inserted in a title attribute (and it will (ok, should) still work in IE).
The title attribute is the proper place for it as the HTML spec says that alt text shouldn't show in a tooltip. I don't know why all the templates come like that.

And this helps me how exactly :?:
:?
I think it's a shame to have removed the visible post count. What next? Already I notice there's a call for locations and the status bar to be removed.
Personally speaking I find ALL the information displayed gives a very useful general idea about someone, particularly when they have a handle I'm not familiar with.
Anyway I'm miffed 'cos I'm not far away from becoming godlike (and even though I wasn't going to post a "wooppee look at me" I WANTED TO SEE IT!!
So smackbottom :smackbottom: to all you killjoys!! lol
