I was paying £20 per week when I first left school and that was 1986!, my net take home pay was £73 per week. I must admit though I used to borrow a tenner of my mum during the week without my dad knowing.
My mates two kids both still live at home and are both working and they pay NOTHING!!, I do not know how he puts up with it!.
I had a clash with my father about something like that many years back. He rightfully asked me to pay also. But it didn't go with all the demands he made to maintain the house etc. So it didn't go down too well. Mind you, it accelerated my decision to move to New Zealand back then. Maybe he just wanted to kick me in the butt so I would make a decision how to carry on with my life. It wasn't that I had been living with them all the time. I had just finished my studies and moved back home after five years away.
So if your son really doesn't get the message, then might as well go up to £50. Seeing your partner is aligning her life to make his as comfortable as he could possibly wish for, you have every right to do so.
The thing you will need to work out for yourself is how much you'd miss him if he pulled his finger out and started his own life. Parents have a tendency to miss their children once they have left the house. ;)
I think as a fair guide the ammount paid should equate to 20% of it's take home pay at least.
If their take home pay is £1200 then £240 a month seems a fair ammount.
We have just started taking money from Mrs777's son, which is £20 every two weeks, and he takes home roughly £300 per fortnight. I feel that is a very small ammount to be honest. I feel that it should be a tad more.
Not an easy one though as the Mother tends to be a tad more sympathetic on this kind of matter than the Father.
being a student I'm only home at holidays, but when I am home I pay £50 a week. and I earn next to nothing as I only work part time in both places I live. so £50 for someone bringing in over a grand a month (which is what I'm expected to live on over 3 months) is fair.
my parents were very tough on me about paying rent.
If i didnt have it i was simple.
As soon as i was working i had to pay.
And i had to pay £200 a month on £800.
Id move in with you if you just want £50!
make him pay -£400 is reasonable if you take food, electric, hot water and other thing into consideration.
i used o have to pay a third to my parents as rent from as soon as i started earning... a third also was put in the bank for mje and the final third i could spend as i liked so by my reconing they should be paying £100 a week not a paultry £50 lol
£1200 a month.
This bit is guessing but -
Fuel - £60 (assuming a 5 mile journey to work)
Car insurance - £30
Tax+MOT - £20
Total - £110 a month.
Leaving over a thousand pounds for his own pleasure.
Have YOU got £1000 to play with after paying the bills? For spending on yourself?
I worked out what my son costs (turns 21 in 2 weeks). Over and above what I would be paying anyway he costs me about £160 a month.
He is only on Job seekers and at college (bus fares, lunch etc to come out of the JS) so I only take £10 a week - but that's 20% of his income.
If he were earning £1200 a month you can be darned sure he would be paying what he costs me.
I don't know how serious your situation is, but I might be tempted to list out the household costs nice and clearly and present him with a broken-down bill. It would certainly make £50 look a lot more reasonable'.
I would never make my kids pay as I consider it a privilege to be a parent.....but then again I'm just a big softie............
well according to the poll charging £50 for rent is Mr evil..
So i think i would be worst than Mr for chraging my kids (if i had any).
I would work out what they earned or got over the month and then a third of that would be there rent.
And if they didnt like that figure they argued .i'd raise the price and then i am sure they would see my point of view and agree the figure i charge them for rent.
20% of the take home wage is standard with all my friends!
Saying that, try getting it off them!
My lad once threw the money at me!
Never too old for a smack, even at 21 !
Well thats another subject?!! and not one i'm gonna start!!
