Ive been hearing all morning on radio and TV thats it's St George's Day today and why dont the English celebrate it like... such at St Patricks day?
It got me thinking that its not advertised enough so maybe the radio and TV stations should try promoting instead or just asking the question, maybe run phone in's as to what people are doing to celebrate which then may inspire others to celebrate it also.
Also you would think that as a country with a reputation of drinkers and party goers the pubs/clubs would try and promote it to get more people in.
I personally dont celebrate any saints days and very rarely drink so I wont be celebrating.
So is anyone out there celebrating and what are you doing to celebrate St Georges day?
Think me slayin a dragon would be too much in this day and age....?? ....mmm think it would.....future ex wife can breathe a sigh of relief smile.....

we seem to celebrate St Patricks Day more than St Georges Day...even Ken Livingston seems happy to spend more tax payers money to celebrate St Patricks Day!
There was a St George's Day parade in Manchester city centre at the weekend, same as there is for St Patrick's day...

There will be St Georges day parades in several towns this weekend with marching bands and flags. I counted 12 "George" flags on my short journey to work this morning. We just seem to celebrate it quietly and not use it as an excuse for a piss up.
My daughter has been celebrating all day confused :? Then its her birthday an she goes mad every year! Certainly doesnt take after me, shes a right little minx :? :? :? lol

Yes your right there.
We all know the reasons why people dont like us to celebrate it, or to fly the St Georges flag. Its fine if your Scottish or Welsh or even Irish. Also independance day is celebrated in the USA. But over here? No as people dont like others to be called " English " nowadays. Sad but true!
Give us a national holiday....another day off is always good. lol
wahey.....:bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
I disagree with kentswingers again.
I am too tired to go into detail...
move along, nothing to see here. biggrin
Happy Shakespeare's Birthday! (And deathday)!
At least he was English which is more than St. George was biggrin
Removing my imported clothing after eating an English Bramly Apple for breakfast, before daubing myself in the cross of Saint G and having a patriotic stroll around the estate today did me no favours what so ever.
And it was chilly
I shan't be doing it again that's for sure.

my son is in the scouts. they do it big style here in doncaster. all the doncaster groups (don't know how many but loads) meet in doncaster which is closed off the parade.
we usually go to support them all but this time we ended up with a very stressful day instead that involved dead bullocks. they fly flags round where we live. though some have had complaints from foreigners who have been told to go away ans shut their eyes as they go past.
whips

Dead bullocks fly flags round your way? Weird! biggrin bolt

lol yeah ok that reads weird lol
the poor bullocks won't be flying anything anymore unfortunately.

Sorry! It was just the way it read that struck me as funny, not the poor bullocks dying! sad
they dont celebrate this day in the schools here locally. My daughter works in a nursery where they do celebrate it just thought though that they celebrate other nationalities days so why not our own
Maybe if the bloke was actually English, we may celebrate his dragon slaying skills. Wonder how big his chopper was lol

The scots, welsh and irish are fiercly proud of there nationhood.. good on them, same can be said for Geordies, or Scousers or The cornish... it is part of there identity
but I think you have actually stumbled on the answer in jest....
Independance day in the US is a huge national holiday and we all make a bloody long weekend of it...
In Ireland, St Patricks day is again a national holiday, and they take a few days off....
Half the problem is where 's day is in the calander.... the week before the may day bank holiday weekend, if you had a big do for that... you'd end up having 5 bank holidays in the space of a few weeks... good friday, easter monday, st georges, may bank holiday monday and spring bank holiday monday.....
sean....

They problem is that the Cross of St. George has been hi-jacked by the NF/BNP and if anybody celebrates being 'English', they're lumped in with that lot of knuckle-draggers.
St Patrick's day is not so much a national day for the Irish, it's more about a day to celebrate the Guinness Marketing Dept. They have a St. Patricks day parade in Brum every year and it's full of people who've never been further west than Rhyl.
As for the West Bromwich St George's day parade mentioned earlier, the council tried to stop it last year, but the residents caused a rumpus and the council relented and let it go ahead. I used to live about 5 minutes away from it's starting point. I'm not sure about this year, as I moved areas.
