I've had tinnitus for as long as I can remember... since I was a very small kid. It used to drive me mad and my mum wondered why I was constantly waking up and whinging lol   ... Then when I was about 10ish I saw a programme on TV about it and my mum took me to the docs. Til then I thought it was normal and that everyone had it rolleyes . Anyways, the doc was pretty unhelpful and basically said there as nothing they could do  So since then I have never really bothered about it. TBH I don't even hear the ringing any more unless I really listen for it. In fact, it would be pretty strange if it wasn't there. I have never had any explanation about why I have it and it doesn't appear to affect my hearing....... uggggggggggghhhhhhh... what was that you said? wink
Sorry I can't help as I just got used to it, I guess every long term sufferer does, but I can well understand that until you do get used to it how mad it drives you... confused
I too have had tinnitus as what I can only describe as a whistle for as long as I can remember. However recently I have also acquired another lower pitched sound. Sometimes like drumming, sometimes more like a diesel engine running. It did seem to subdue for a couple of weeks but is back again now. This has in particular made it difficult to sleep which creates a snowball situation as when tired / irritable / stressed tinnitus is more noticeable.
In addition I have a hearing loss in mid/upper frequencies. This makes following conversation in a group or noisy environment difficult and often I feel I am seen as ignornat or uninterested and higher pitched female voices are harder to hear Yes I have a hearing aid but of limited use. OK in quiet places to increase levels above the tinnitus but if significant background it just increases everything so does not help discrimination.
Noisy pubs/bars/clubs are simply somewhere I never go and where else is there to meet people?
Hence why it Saturday night and I am on here not out having fun.

I have had tinnitus for as long as I can remember. I was really surprised as a kid that everyone didn't have noises in their heads all the time. I'm in my 40's now, and seems to have got worse recently. I can't really understand people if there is other noise going on, so when i go to noisy pubs or clubs, I just sit and smile at people because I haven't got a clue what they are saying.
Most of the time it is just like high-pitched white noise, which varies in intensity, then there is the high note that joins in too sometimes.
I have learned to live with it, but it does get annoying occasionally.
This hasn't really helped has it, sorry.......

well thats just the same as my mrs she was born with poor hearing though that has gradualy got worse over the yrs and she has suffered with tinnitus for about 5 yrs realy bad news is there is no cure or any good treatment for tinnitus asll that is available is a devise called a masker which is a hearing aid which gives a different noise over the top of the constant buzzing in the has tried it but it realy didnt help as her tinnitus is quite severe but it may suit other ppl if there buzzing is not as severe.
