I have searched on this, but the answer isn't there, so bear with me!!
I need to move all my Itunes from a PC to laptop. I know that I can't just copy to disk and it's that easy, bearing in mind I have over 18Gb of music on it! I need some help from SOMEONE WHO HAS SUCCESSFULLY DONE THIS BEFORE to help me out. Guesswork won't do as it could mean me losing all my music from it and I'm not going to sit here and reinput thousands of tracks. I have very limited time as my pc will be gone by Friday so hence the urgency.
So if you have ever done this successfully yourself before, please let me know ASP.
Many many thanks

sending you a pm in a mo mal lol

Get a crossover cable from Maplins or the like (couple of quid), connect the laptop to the PC via the network/ethernet cards. Share the drive on the PC that you want the laptop to be able to see. Drag and drop the drive onto your laptop, job done !!smile
There may be a couple of extra steps involved but that is fundamentally all you need to do.
Better explanation here...

it's pretty easy as long as you're not a complete technophobe ;)

Oh. if it was that easy!!! sad sorry, that won't work and would risk losing all the tracks. That's why I need someone who has successfully done it themselves.
Gands - thanks for the PM, but as you said, you gave me a solution for something else!!!
Sassy - Iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii Peeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Ooooooooooooooooooo Deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
Simple! lol
Mal - still looking!!
Do you know any-one with a portable hard drive? Or a larger Mp3 player? Connecting the PC and laptop seems the easiest way.
Good luck with it.
H.
What seems easy just isn't - trust me!! Apple have this sewn up so that it prevents people transferring files from one ipod to another, ie music sharing. So the operating system for the Ipod, "Itunes", is stitched up to prevent easy file transfer. If I try 'guesses' at what works, it will wipe all the tracks from Itunes, which in turn, when the Ipod is connected, would wipe the Ipod - hence why I need guidance from someone who has successfully done this already!!
I do appreciate everyones' offer of help, though. thanks.

As natandh says a portable HD seems to be the answer.
That is the way I done mine >>>> PC to HD then HD to Lappy.
Hope you get it done soon. Good luck with it.

Oooops + I may have posted to late lol
Sorry, should have realised nothing is easy with an Apple. Do they have a technical help section on their web site?

Sorry. I'll shut up! biggrin
Sorry, didn't realise it would be that difficult...files are files in the IT world I work in !!smile

This assumes your pc is "authorised":

Don't think you're cheating anyone out of any money cos they are YOUR CDs I presume and not ones bought from iTunes? You can 'see' the hidden files but they are not in any order but can be transferred over.
There's a couple of great books Mal - 'iPod for Dummies' and 'iPod secrets' (or something like that) and have a look for iPod chat forum where all the blokes with the answers hang out. I've read a few of them now and then.
:P

There's a whole article about it
cool
Hi guys
Thank you all very much for the advice and links and I have now recreated my Itunes on my laptop and transferred all my tunes. unfortunately....................................................... confused
during the process, all my music files moved themselves into a folder in Itunes called 'Mals' Music' and there is nothing in my Library. This has now wiped my Ipod of all music, although all the tracks, all 5,000 of them, are in the Mal's Music folder. How can I move/copy these files back into the 'library' where they will update my Ipod?
Yours, confused, concerned, and semi pissed off

Here's how I did this when I last changed Macs. However If you have bought any of your music from the iTunes store, you must do the 'deauthorisation' process linked above. If it's alll your own rips from CD, this isn't necessary.
1) Make a backup. Burn everything to DVD, CD-R, whatever you can.
2) Open iTunes and use the 'add to library' feature to select the "mals music' folder. (this should be somewhere obvious in the menus, on my Mac it's near the top of the 'file' menu, but the PC version is little different)
3) That's all!
Okayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!
It's getting a little scary now! The folder which had all my music in it which was visible in the Itunes 'source' list is now no longer visible! I'm now getting a little edgy that they may have disappeared into the ether. I tell myself that it hasn't, but the sweat running down my back is telling me otherwise!! confused
I really do need some help on this pretty damn soon!!!!
Mal
........................................... and relax!!!! lol
Don't ask me how, but I found the folder and the tracks are now happily moving across to my Ipod
For those who may go through the same traumas, the following link helped a lot (until the end!)

Thanks again to all those who offered help and links. I'm very grateful.
Mal
All happy and warm!
Thank goodness for that, I can relax now and look forward to Friday

Mal - hope you managed to get it all sorted. smile
If anyone else is having similar problems, the following might help....
Firstly, change your settings inside iTunes so that it doesn't automatically synchronise with your iPod. On a PC running Wiindows XP it's under Edit/Preferences/iPod tab: "Manually manage songs and playlists". This allows you to move music around, delete it etc without affecting the contents of your iPod.
Next, there will be two types of music file on your computer: those you've ripped from CDs or downloaded that don't have copy protection, and those that are copy-protected (e.g. Apple iTunes AAC/.m4p). You only need to worry about the latter as you can re-copy the other ones when you've done whatever changes you need to make to your equipment.
To move copy-protected files around, the easiest way is to use a copy protection remover. This is still a grey area legally so you make your own decisions as to whether you feel comfortable with it...personally I'm of the view that if I have paid for one copy and I want to move that one copy to other equipment, I've not contravened the agreement. This also allows you to burn the music to a CD if required.
The programme I've used is called Hymn and it's available from here: . I've found it easy to use and reliable.
What you need to do is download " ipod rip" from google search page. Load this onto laptop install itunes and follow instructions from ipod rip help page. This will take tunes from ipod and safely upload them to your itunes on of luck this does work as the guys at Apple shop in London told me of the program when my pc crashed and i lost all 9000 the program is free. Best wishes Trevor biggrin
Again, thanks to everyone who offered help and advice on this and hopefully if anyone has a similar problem in future they'll find this and sort it easily.
I have one other small problem. After I did all this, I know that somewhere I have a folder with about 18Gb of tracks which is a duplicate of the one in use by Itunes. I have done all the normal searches, but have failed to track it down. So rather than look for it, can someone let me know which folder is the one that Itunes uses so that I don't delete the wrong one?
Thanks Guys
