4) Some new posters who show a bit of promise are nit picked to death and then they dont post.

Forget the people who used to be here and arn't any more. No point dwelling on the past. People move on for many reasons. If they've stopped posting, then the success of the forums must come from expansion and new blood.
Look to the future! I've seen a number of people who I know start posting on one of the forums only to be shot down in flames at the first opportunity by people who ought to know better. For some of those friends it was there last post.
So I see the forum from being strangled from within, and it's also the main reason I don't post very often myself.
Also I find that the few good threads that come along seem to explode. I go to work and its on page 2. Come home and its on page 15, with a dozen more pages added before bed time. I physically can not spend so much time reading the posts, and often any comments I might have are only going to be quoting somebody from way back in the thread and it would look like I'm going over old ground. I wouldn't say slow down... but there are a number of threads where two people seem to be holding a real time conversation with each other. You want to do that guys? use the 'kin chatroom !
The final reason behind my positive abstention from posting is the sometimes overused emoticons.
If I want to see what somebody is saying, I cover up the emoticon. In my book there are too many insults being thrown, and just cos there's a wink at the end of the sentence, that makes it ok?
Right, that should have just about insulted, upset or generally annoyed most people, but if there is still somebody out there with a smile on their face, I apologise, and I'll try and include you next time.

You know what? The forum is boring at the moment and is in the longest trough ever.
So, what are we going to do about it?
Well, it isn't just going to improve itself. We can sit here moaning about it or we can be proactive and make the forum a better place!!
Every person that has posted in this thread has the ability to improve the Forum. We (myself included) need to take the bull by the horns and reclaim what used to be a fun place. Together we can transform it and make it what we want it to be, rather than what it has become!!
Let's stop the sniping, the moaning, the dissection of posts and all the other things that put people off posting. Let's welcome Newbies with open arms and show what a caring place this is. Let's put the humour back into this place, but most importantly, let's put the friendliness back into the Forum.
I am willing to try (again)!! Are you?? confused :? :? :?
In Edit: Good post Ian

anyways, Im in for kicking the forum up the arse.....i am trying (LOrd knows I am trying....just ask mr B how trying I am!!)
.........and flower...I loves ya hun :rose:
One thing that could well improve things especially for the newbies, is less use of the quote facility. It has its use but it is often abused.
Two things it does. It instantly highlights one persons 'evaluation' of someone else and this puts the newbies under early examination; it is often directed at the person and not the topic of the thread; and more often than not resulting in the newbies giving up.
The other thing it does; is flood the threads with one on one chit chat and mess hall banter with the experienced posters, which invariably leads to highjacking and loss of momentum of the topic.
My general style is to use as little as possible of the quote and to incorporate the gist of another persons postings in my posting. However this often goes unnoticed.
So I think the SH forum is no different from any workplace. In that people are somehow happier being involved in the usual corporate organisational pastimes such as politics and moving and shaking.
Having said that someone will no doubt quote this.........
cant be arsed anymore.. you get silly little pms off silly little people whinging and moaning about silly little things you say..things that are light hearted get taken seriously because people choose to take them seriously , serious points get taken lightly because it belittles the comments , the forum has been spoiled by a noisey minority imo, hence i dont post as much as once upon a time, its not like having your say makes any difference what so ever, yet without the likes of me having my say and the many other more outspoken types that do the same as me these days it gives some of the mods a quiet life, and that must be good...for someone..
of course this is just my opinion , its not what i assume most others think or is it a having a go troll type post etc etc , dare say ill get a pm off someone saying it is, or maybe even on here..
i used to care passionately about this forum, i dont give a hoot anymore and use it purely as a means of convenience these days, nothing to do with folk having to pay, nothing to do with new owners , maybe the place just doesnt feel as freindly to me anymore, thats cool i dont need it anyway, the chatroom a once place a few years ago has proven to be far more interesting a place than this is anyway, damn site better behaved imo too...

When I first started posting, I used to get annoyed by the constant people saying the forum wasn't as good as it used to be and that many of the great posters had gone (hence subtly belittling present day posters somewhat). If regular posters got fed up with the repeat topics and no longer contributed to the threads because they had done so many times in the past, then I questioned why they stayed and moaned rather than being proactive in creating a new vibe.
This is the stage I have got to, bored by the same old topics, I no longer have anything productive to say, hence I don't post anymore. We could learn a lot from Thumper "If you can't say anything nice then don't say anything at all". I don't want to be one of the whingers I used to dislike myself.
Forums always go through this cycle and it's up to new people to keep it going with current, intersting and mainly positive posts. Yes there are always contentious issues and posters but there is still no need for outright rudeness that's been shown plenty in the past. Even stupid plonker newbies (let's face it we've seen many) with badly thought out twattish first posts can be ignored rather than shot down in flames.
But... if I see a really good swinging related thread I may just be tempted to post, as I always say this ain't a bleeding knitting circle and I used to love the serious swinging threads discussing interesting related issues.
pink x
Perhaps, as this is the kind of thread that experienced members are more likely to initiate and post in; and as it often invokes as much negative as positive feelings and ideas, but showcases what it's like at the 'top' (in effect demonstrating to newbies where it eventually all leads to), we should desist from creating and contributing to such threads.
