What a bloody stupid saying ive always the point in having a cake and not being able to eat it?!!Well, i was in the pub the other day and overheared an old chap saying to his chum "You cant have your cake an hape-nee"(half penny). Amazed at what i,d heared, i asked about what he,d just said,,he told me that the origional way of saying it was as he had said it, but over many years its meaning had been changed,, for what ever reason,, to what it is today. So now it all makes perfect sence smile

I've always assumed it means if you've eaten your cake then you haven't got it anymore.
You can't eat your cake and keep it, something like that.
As for the ha'penny, I'm guessing there's a coin hidden in the cake, like the shilling in the xmas pud, so if your cake is still intact you haven't got the ha'penny yet. Once you've got the ha'penny, the cake is gone. You can't have both.

i think he meant that if you buy a cake(for a ha,penny) from ye olde cake shoppe,then you will have your cake but not your ha,penny hence,,you cant have your cake n ha,penny confused
