My first car was a 1975 MkIII Ford Cortina 1.3 that I bought in 1985 for about £350.
Good things I remember about it:-
1. Passing my test, coming home and taking off the L plates.
2. Going up the M4 as fast as it would go while the whole car was shaking and rattling.
3. It was able to withstand all the thrashing I gave it.
Bad things I remember about it:-
1. Everything leaked (engine, brakes, cooling system - you name it).
3. The driver's seat sagged on one side when I leaned back in it.
2. I parked it in a car park and it was stolen.
3. It was recovered a few months later.
I have far happier memories of my second car, a 1974 Capri GT, but that's another story.
So, what was your first car and what do you remember about it?
i bought a vw beetle, but i was only 14 at time,mi old man was a car dealer,i jus had it 4 messin about with,my first car on passin my test was a marina coupe,.......it saw loads of action, mainly back seat,AND my first car smash,....we all lived like but was really harrowin experience........................ cool

A good car to go "munching" in, I think.
I'm really going to show my age here redface
My first car was a '69 (appropriate year) Hillman Imp. Bought when I was 19 and at college.
It was great except for a leaky radiator, which was easily repaired with some sealant that I put in the cooling system.
The only trouble was that I left the heater on and the sealant blocked the vanes up too - it was the coldest car in world after that  Still did another 40,000 miles though being used by various members of my family biggrin

PS got a '77 TR7 after that, but really found my car niche when I got my first XJS
Nissan Micra. It was quicker to wait for the shifting of the tectonic plates to get you to your destination confused
I bought a Citroen Visa ... Y reg with 18,000 miles on the clock (the old man who owned used it twice a week !! about 2 miles a week). I was 18.
Lasted a few years and was kinda sweet but I loved my second car more smile
on my 5th now (in 13 years) and hate it yuck yuck yuck (never buy a ford mondeo they suck) and so I'll be changing it in a few months to a 4x4 most probably. Git my eye on a Ssangyong Musso.

I passed my test in a Metro. I loved the Toyota Celica.
I owned a Sierra and I used to love the acceleration in that. The front end used to rise off the floor and pin the occupants to their seats!
My 1st car was a Blue mark 1 escourt, you could open the doors with a spoon!
It did have something called twin choke webbers on that made it move quite good though & gorgeous alloys biggrin
Been through several cars since then, but now got one I really wanted, a sexy emerald green Puma :P
I know .........easily pleased but love my car :D
Last year got my first car before passing my test (?) a brand new Vauxhall Agila. Cute wee thing, loved it's bizarre shoebox look. Soon hated it's 1.8 engine.
Exchanged it for a Zafira, this year. Auto. (It's my Motability car) Love the 7 seat thing, the mega room in it and the auto is actually pretty good. V quick and responsive transmission changes. But you know.....
My first bike, in 1987.... *sigh* a really beat up Honda CB100 - no 2 stroke for me! My partner at the time supervised my totally strip-down of her, and made me rebuild her from scratch. One of the best lessons I ever learned..... don't go out with mechanics! lol No, it was truly a useful way to learn all about my new passion.
Learnt to drive in a Nissan, and then on passing my father gave me his old Wolseley, lasted a few years, then left to source my own cars

I've never had a car or learnt to drive. Can we have a thread about memorable train journeys?
rolleyes
Mike.
A gold D Reg Renault 5 - for £800 quid.
Great car until the thing cut out every time you put any pressure on the brake.
It didn't last long after that.
Love Caroline

Vix,
I owned a Honda CB100 before buying a car, although I didn't take any motorbike lessons. I came off it twice - luckily I didn't break any bones! Its top speed was about 60 Mph. The engine was so noisy at this speed, that even with "ear protectors" I could hear the sound of the engine in my ears for hours after a journey!

Mike,
If it's any consolation, I don't have a car either at the moment. The public transport system where I live is so good, I don't really feel I need one. I can't say I am missing the expense of having a car either.
redface For my 21st my brother gave me a 1959 VW Beetle in bubble-gum pink. It even had those funny little magnetic indicator arms on the side and the lights dimmer switch was on the floorboard with the foot controls. I loved that car. Bit of a bitch to drive on the motorway though, got blown all over the place. confused
Back in the dim and distant past, the first car that I bought was a moderately clapped-out DAF66. (DAF was bought out by Volvo not long after this model was made I believe, which might say something!)
It had a reputation for being able to run on anything, including paraffin, although I never put it to the test. The weirdest thing about it was the huge rubber band under the car that connected the engine to the rear wheels. I kid ye not - "Variomatic" tranmission consisited of a few pulleys and a big rubber belt, in the same way that the little automatic scooters' automatic gearboxes work. But much bigger, and prone to making horrible noises when it scrapes against the ground when you go over something bumpy...
No wonder I ended up a biker, eh?
My first car (which I'm still in coz I've only been driving for a couple of months) is my beloved little 93 VW Golf... its atumatic so piss easy to drive... although expensive to insure/run.. so she's going sad ..
Any good suggestions on a small, 5 door, diesel car? (not a fiesta)
Mine was a Hillman Imp costing £60 - which was a lot of money then!
My mum and dad bought it for me after I came off my Honda 50 and slid under a wagon!!!!

You cant go far wrong with Peugeot diesels they just run forever mines got 140000 on the clock and runs like a dream, picked it up for £500 no rust and barely a mark on it. A friend had 3 for his buisiness and there was 250000+ on all of them when he let them go and they were still running well. Just checked they've got PEUGEOT 106 1.4 XRD DIESEL which is similar to what I drive check em out. And they are cheap insurance, this is my first car and I went fully comp with all the legal stuff for just over £500 which isnt bad for first time these days. smile
Passed my test 7 months ago and was running around in a nissan sunny 1.4 lx j reg but thats gone to my partner...i've got a l reg nissan micra 1.3 lx now and its quicker than the sunny......and its my baby...5 door and cheap to run and insure....very happy with her......want a newer model of a micra now tho... rolleyes ...might get 1 next year :bounce:
Passed my test in a Vauxhall Nova and then wrote it off the next day  2 points on my license and I still only had my provisional!!!
My next car after that was a 1968 Ford Mustang - mostly held together with Duck tape and rivets.
