A little of both really, i think that certain major situations and the meeting of certain souls we encounter during a lifetime are pre destined and un avoidable. When these "fates of destiny" occour we have a choice, a right and a wrong choice.
Imagine it like its a crossroad in lifes journey, the crossroad is unavoidable because its pre destined to be there, no sign posts as such, one way is the right road, the other way is the wrong road and you only have your instinct to use in deciding which road is the right one to take.
