I can see it now... picture the scene... a moonlit beach, waves crashing against the dunes, passion is in the air..... Markz and Meaty running towards eachother along the shore, the welks and mussels  ...ing as they trip along, although the winkles in the sand do tend to get a little excited

There are boxes in the admin section of my website for meta tags but I still haven`t worked out what I`m supposed to put in them !! rolleyes
I think I`ve almost managed to come up with a question to ask the support people but I`m almost certain that I`m not going to understand the answer !!

I think the easiest way to describe a metatag is as a description of the site - usually one word (although I suppose they can be more than one) It makes it easier for google et al to find things....
For example - Swinging Heaven's meta tags maybe - "Swinging", "Heaven", "Swinging heaven", "Dogging", "Uk swingers", "Swinging chat", "Chat rooms", "Photo ads".
There's probably more to it than that, but that's how I understand it....

There are programs that monitor the popularity (as in hits and average traffic etc), but I can't remember any of them rolleyes

for google? errrrr, maybe google analytics?

I only occasionally use Google because I prefer to use Copernic Agent, which is a free piece of software that collates the answers from several search engines. I also use Wikipedia quite a lot too.

I haven't used Copernic agent or heard of it (I'll have to have a look at it), and although I use Wiki a lot too, because nearly anyone can add to it, I do tend to take a lot of information on there with a pinch of salt lol

Look up "higher site rankings" - there are quite a few user friendly sites for info out there...if you know what to, erm, google. lol

And that statement and many others like is a huge reflection on society and how it gets it's information....before if someone asked what something meant the response would be "look it up in a dictionary/encyclopedia", no most people just say "google it"
I must admit I use Google a lot more than I realised  rolleyes

Hits do equate to the number of people visiting your site.
Things such as meta tags and also links to other sites can also help improve your Google ratings.......I think confused

That makes sense - if you link to a site that is already popular, you are far more likely to get people visiting your site, even if it's an idle looky see....
Quote by flower411
But do "hits" equate to people actually visiting the site or the amount of times something on our site is googled ??
And funnily enough ...it`s an equestrian site so the Jordan factor isn`t the furthest thing from my mind considering the new Katie Price clothing range !!! rolleyes

I think it's mainly how many times a site is visited, but I'm not 100% sure. I'll just check er....google :giggle:
I haven't had chance to filter any relevant information from the link below, but it seems to at least have some answers in it - be warned though, a lot of the content is Geek Central - it was making my head hurt at one point  ....I'll have to try and read it all tomorrow - Am too tired to comprehend it all at the moment lol

before t'internet we used to look in books. Google is just a library on your computer wink

Yeah !! An instant library of all the worlds information ......
But most of us only get the information that appears on the first page when we google and in a lot of cases the "first page" information is paid for in some way by somebody ....so most of the infomation that we receive from google is there because somebody paid for it to be there !!
never take the first answer you're given unless it really makes sense to. for the question you had in your OP the first link would probably give you what you want to know
That was an example of me using google rather than having a conversation ...
I`m interested in this mostly because having recently started a website I still can`t fathom why certain searches bring my site up on page 2 of google , others make us appear on page 17 and other`s I haven`t yet had the patience to find out !!!
I don't know a huge lot about how google gets it's information from except that it uses a lot (and I mean a lot  ) of automated programs usually called "Google bots", they basically collate all the information on a particular site and that information gets processed. The reason why your site is on page one on some searches and on later pages on others depends I suppose on how many "Hits" you get, and what those hits are....
For example, if you was to run a newsgroup and ran a story on say for arguements sake (and I know you probably wouldn't in real life lol but bear with me) Jordan, you could expect to get a lot of hits as despite her being a twit (and that's the polite way of describing her rolleyes ), a lot of people want to know all about that piece of news..... however, if you run a story on that Hadron collider in Switzerland, and you could expect less. Put simply, the more a site is used, the higher up the google ratings it goes.
There are programs that monitor the popularity (as in hits and average traffic etc), but I can't remember any of them
I think that makes sense (well, in my head it did  )
