Paul, my connection dropped as I was replying so I am glad that Fred got in with an explanation - and I appreciated your response too.
Generalisations are never a good thing - but are sometimes inevitable.
There are two HUGE things in your favour (and a small third one):
1. You are an active member of this Forum who makes intelligent and entertaining posts of your own. That puts you into my first category of "intelligent, thoughtful and caring people".
2. You have already made the point yourself that you read the Sun for its sports coverage and that you "feel the shame".
My comments, though a generalisation, were aimed at those who fit into neither of the above categories. Enough said?
The third small thing is that you are close enough to meet up for a beer. Interested?

Will;
You are a star.
Of course I don't normally drink alcohol - but will make an exception just this once.
Is a 'rake of beers' an appropriate term?

So, I do have to object to you branding me as having an extremely low IQ because i read the Sun. I can assure you that my IQ is f**k**g huge.

As in all things Paul, we all make generalisations at times. I did as well.
Even you have the intelligence to know that Will was not aimimg it personally at you - neither was I. wink wink wink
Unless of course you IQ is a three figure one - ! wink (That was a joke as well in case you missed it!)
Come on!
Fred
Fred;
I absolutely know that - and my reply was very tongue in cheek... I don't think that I would ever get hung up on any responses in here (well - not often anyway)
I read a variety of papers (I am somewhat of a news junkie) and love to read the same story in different papers - just to see what the slant is.

and a copy of the Sun to while away the time
So that takes care of about 2.6 seconds. Then what the hell do you do? dunno
Given that an IQ in double figures (never mind treble) is a handicap to both footballers and Sun readers alike (let alone the so-called journalists) I suppose they deserve each other. The REALLY depressing thing is that it sells more than any other atrocious pile of crap banghead banghead banghead banghead banghead
Oh well, serves me right for coming back in here during the afternoon. The irony is that this so-called 'den of iniquity' is crammed full of intelligent, thoughtful and caring people. While the 'red-tops' for all that they don the habilliments of moral rectitude (and discard them just as easily) are often staffed by sleazy little low-lifes who mire themselves in the gutter and hurl unmerited abuse at anyone who passes. Sweeping generalisation? Probably, but they keep doing stupid things to deserve it.
Note to the mods - don't worry about comeback. Some of my words have more than four letters so the hacks won't have a clue!
....and me so mild mannered too! You should hear me when I am REALLY angry! redface
Will;
I have read your many posts on a variety of topics and always found them entertaining, intelligent and full of humour.
So, I do have to object to you branding me as having an extremely low IQ because i read the Sun. I can assure you that my IQ is f**k**g huge.

I am less angry about the article that I am about the complete and utter load of drivel that has dripped out of Dierdrie Saunders!
Can anyone tell me her qualifications in either general counselling or sexual health counselling? confused confused confused I would really love to know......
This paper is so full of shite that it must be only its readers that use it to wipe their arse - The rest of us would be likely to get more on us than it wiped off if we used it. mad mad mad mad mad mad
The truth of the matter is problably that the two Sun staff were dogging themselves and cheating on their own relationships and chanced upon Stan and thought it was worth a few quid!
Sell their own souls they would! mad mad mad mad
Fred

Agree with you about the 'Agony Aunt'. If you ever read any of these people they are all wankers.
I will confess here to buying the Sun - although I do so because it has superb sport coverage. Okay - i feel the shame but at least I am honest.
I think that Stan was 'bubbled' to the Sun by some doggers - and then Stan was completely set up. The members of Her Majesty's Gutter Press are superb at doing this and have many many years of practice.

A footballer? Is that all? Good well, I suppose one ought to be grateful he hasn't beaten up someone in the street

Wasn't it his girlfriend he beat up instead? They were on holiday in France or something. I think it was Ulrika Johnson but can't be sure.
Steve
Steve;
It was Ulrika that he beat up. And to make himself even more of a fool - he did it in a packed bar (i believe in France - and the bar was full of splendid Scotsman). Stan was given a lesson
Paul
This could be a long list... but I wont rant about everything
1. People that wont make eye contact when they talk to you.
2. People that seem to be using 'the force' when driving.
3. People that think it is funny to mock the disabled (whether mentally or physically disadvantaged).
4. Those phonecalls you receive, typically Thursday and Friday evenings offering new windows, doors, guttering, etc for free..!!!! And they wont take no for an answer.
5. Tripe (nuff said)
6. Watching football in the pub. When you are surrounded by muppets that know the 'square root of f**k all' about football.
That will do for the moment

Many thanks. My memory is not what it was.

I saw a shooting star last week and made a wish. It didn't work because Keano got sent off and we lost 2-1!!!!

Bloody hell Sarge - I did not realise that you were a Man U fan. As a life long Gooner I can feel somewhat smug at this moment in time. But the fat lady is not quite ready to sing yet.
Paul
Gosh - you guys are terribly cruel. But you do make me laugh. And that is a very good medicine
lol
Hopefully I'm not being too morbid today (reaches for another ciggie)
Chris Rea is one of my favourites
Opening verse from Tell me there's a heaven
The little girl she said to me
What are those things that I can see
Each night when I come home from school
When mama calls me in for tea
On every night a baby dies
And every night a mama cries
What makes those men do what they do
To make that person black and blue
It is, for me, Rea's best song... full of emotion. Reduces me to tears

This strikes such a chord with me. Now having nearly reached the venerable age of 49 and I still can't completely quit smoking. My 14 yr old son moans at me all the time and even bought me patches as a Christmas present... and still I don't have the willpower to quit.
My mother died of cancer - a sight so appalling that I would have ended her life to stop the suffering ... and still I have not quit
I 'packed up' a couple of years ago and made it through two weeks - eating sweets (and i don't like sweets - well apart from wine gums) and then thought maybe I'll have a cigar (and i hate cigars) and there i was back on the smoking treadmill.
My son suggested that maybe i should start with a smoking free weekend. Of course I said - I can do that. He caught me smoking in the bathroom. How pathetic is that to cheat on a promise to your son.. and still I smoke.
In fact I am smoking as I type this.
I smoke more when under pressure - so my job was killing me so I took a severance payoff. Well, no pressure now, so I should be able to give up. Well, that does not work. I now have so much free time I can smoke myself to effing death.
I have 40 cigs left. I've told myself in no uncertain terms that they will be my last. But of course I've already devised a plan to have say one or two cigars a day.
Good luck to all who are trying to give up (and I include myself in that)
Paul
Oh go on, go on, publish them now. Could do with a laugh

I find myself strangely drawn to checking out plug sockets!!
Now surely I'm not the only one??? (Someone please tell me I'm not. Even if I am tell me I'm not so I feel better. In fact don't because I will think you have said I'm not just to make me feel better and then I won't know if I am or I'm not!!! OMG Why did I start this??) (Must stop putting things in brackets, it only confuses me!!)
Anyway what I think I mean is that by looking at the plug sockets you can tell which part of the world they are from. Light switches can reveal a lot too!!!!
Fetches his coat and walks off muttering that it all made sense when it was in my head.........Just knew I shouldn't have written it down.........
Sgt Bilko

Sarge;
Now you have revealed this 'addiction'. People will now install false plug sockets and light switches just to confuse you.

I am really, really sorry but this guy is a real genius
I have not laughed so much since my last wage packet !! lol
Do you think he is for real ?? dunno

I think he is for real. Just has a bit of trouble expressing himself.
Pete - keep trying but maybe take some moments before you post. Maybe type it out and then read a few times before posting.
I read this twice and thought that I must post a response.. But i must admit that i cannot find the words. This was so moving it reduced me to tears and made me think about how lucky I have been - even when I have thought that life has treated me hard at times
You have my upmost respect

yea but you have heard of the internet mishaps that happen in the news. I just dont wanna be in the next news report.

Thanks for the clarification. That's better. What do you fear?

307, maybe you should log on to a "improve your bravery" web site for a few days, Swinging Heaven is for us bold people lol lol lol lol

Ah Blue - I don't believe that he would have the nerve to log on to such a site - nor would he have the 'balls' to engage in a 'verbal' joust

Maybe you could elucidate somewhat... and also finish what you have writ (sic)
Whilst never wanting to sound negative...
Is " Intelligent 307" an oxymoron?
I find it very sad that some people are critical - or maybe they are trying to be funny......
Maybe I will shut up before I get annoyed

Paul darling, I use lots of terms of endearment - love, sweetie, darling, etc - because I'm a naturally affectionate person.
It has nothing to do with Sir Richard Attenborough's excuse that he could never remember names and so called everybody 'darling'!
Sappho xxx

Sappho;
What an 'Angel' you are lol
Paul xx
I just wondered. I have a propensity (?) for using the term 'Sweetie' with ladies that I get on well with. Lord knows why I do this - and I actually find it rather 'naff' but I still do it.
Just wondered what other people use as 'terms etc , etc'
Note: To Mods - if this is a completely stupid thread the please feel free to delete
Paul
Mal;
Read your ad - which I thought was superb and a lesson to many. Glad to hear that you had some very positive responses.
I voted for the Quiet etc , etc.
But would suggest that if you take that option you should cook at her house (now I know that some will object to some stranger cooking in their kitchen - but i think that it is a lovely gesture)... Just think of the conversation, good wine, touching etc that you can have in the kitchen as (you) Mal prepares a simple, yet delectable meal. (I do have suggestions for menu lol )
All right, I love cooking so maybe I am jaundiced about this
Paul
This is a topic that could run and run and keeps me thinking
8 Mile (Eminem is actually very, very good, the soundtrack is superb and closing out with One Shot - brilliant)
Deliverance (bought the DVD last year. First time I'd seen it since the original release. Duelling Bango's scene still electric)
The Dish (Bought the DVD as a present - watched it and kept it. Tells the 'true' story of the first moon landing and the trials and tribulations at the Aussie earth station. Funny, in a quiet sort of way)
Shrek (bought for my son. This is seriously funny - and the outtakes at the end are superb)
Blade (Wesley Snipes - it's just great action. )
Enough for the moment
Paul
Tricky this ...but some faves
Lord of the Rings (all three)
The Usual Suspects
Pulp Fiction
The Green Mile
Shawshank Redemption
Seven
Blade Runner (Directors cut)
Apollo 13
That's it for the moment
.. and he said that he'd come back as a Great White Shark. "coz they are cool and no other creatures (apart from man) attack them"
I want to come back as a horse. Not a horse that gets ridden (in the horse riding sense) but rather one that gets up late, has a splendid breakfast, stroll down to the stream with his mates and whiles the day away; chatting, playing cards and generally having an easy life.

Two men walk into a pub. the barman says "What is this, some kind of joke?"

My sides have split!!
A very simple joke indeed
' A shire horse walks into a pub. He strolls up to the bar and leans his front legs on the bar. He orders a scotch.'
The barman says "Why the long face"
