Putting up a Wedding photo showing the happy couple smiling for the camera is fine, still having all the family in the background.........is silly.

How about this idea?
As I see it the two sides of the argument are;
For, Lets have DNA testing of everyone so rapists etc can be identified by their DNA.
Against, I've not committed a crime, why should the Gov. have my DNA / don't trust Gov. with my DNA no matter what safeguards they promise.
So, assuming DNA is only to be used to solve crimes.
Who commits most crimes, especially violent crimes? MEN! Sorry lads, but most rapists are men, most murderers are men. Then why do we need to collect female DNA? Statistically, you'll not solve many serious crimes by having it.
Now, I think I'm right in saying that most rapists / murderers etc, have some previous violent record, may be being cruel to animals / wife / girlfriend beating / school bullying. So, if more (for want of better words) low level violent attacks were reported, then the ones most likely to go on to more serious crimes are already on the DNA register, hence easier to trace. While the non-offenders do not have to have their DNA stored.
Possibly, just knowing that their DNA will be taken for the low level offences MIGHT dis-courage the low level attacks.
Now, this is easy to make happen, if you see animal cruelty, report it. Women, if your partner assualts you, don't put up with it or make excuses, report it, get him charged and then he will be DNA tested, job done!!
Now to the second part.........right now science allows people to be identified by their DNA....but what happens as science advances? Maybe, something in the water supply could be swallowed by everyone, with no ill-effects.....except to someone with THAT DNA, maybe to render them blind for 5 days as a punishment or ........well, imagine anything you like, because someone somewhere will try it out, sooner or later.

From a previous Post by Wunderhorse:
An example of this hypocritical attitude is the recent trip to China by the Prime Minster accompanied by ‘the cream of British Business’ to promote our ‘great nation’.
Please be aware that the same Prime Minster speaks about various leaders of other nations that ‘commit crimes against humanity & fail to promote democracy’.
According to various Human Rights organizations; the nation of China executes more of its own people than the rest of nations that have The Death Penalty combined…!!
So we have our ‘elected’ Leader speaking about Human Rights then making Business Deals with a regime that fails to provide the mentioned liberties for its citizens..??
With regard to the bit I've quoted in red.
What about if the Chinese Govt. turned round to Gordon Brown or David Milliband (or whoever was critising their human rights record) and said "OK Gordon, you hold a referendum in Britain on the subject of Capital Punishment and when the results are known come and talk to us again"
Think Gordon would dare? I suspect not!!
John

Don't get what you are saying John...?
Am not being funny or anything just don't get the manner of your point..?
Just to be clear beacuse at times as I've mentioned I can get things mixed up (read previous posts on this thread):
Gordon Brown is Prime Minster.
He makes deals with regimes that do things he claims are wrong.
Therefore, I view him as a hypocrite.
As OUR Government can say that Bruma is wrong yet makes deals with the nation the gives Bruma Weapons.

So do you really want to give the power over life & death to Politicians...!! Beacuse I don't & with recent things going on in U.K Politics...I've lost hope in the system.
Social Justice, Gordon Brown have a word with the poorest people of China or Burma just to name a few.
What's the point in a vote they do it seems what they please.
The point I was making is that, as you say, Politicians, once elected, care very little about the things that matter to ordinary people. I highlighted the fact that if put to a Referendum then Hanging might well be brought back. If you look at an earlier post of mine in this thread I said I would not support capital punishment, but that I would not prevent Ian Huntley and his ilk from committing suicide if they so desired.
I believe that this Country would be much better off if we, like the Swiss and some American States, had much more "direct democracy". Take some of the decisions which directly affect ordinary people OUT of the hands of Politicians. But I also know that it will never happen in this Country!

I love reading Wunderhorses' posts but this time you have confused me bud. The man was found innocent. So even if we had the death penalty......we wouldn't have hung him...

Am sorry if my last post on this thread didn’t make its point in a clear fashion.
That’s down to my Dyslexia which means I have ‘millions of ideas in my head that my hands can’t match in typing speed’.
My point is the following:
If ‘The State’ can deliberately pursue what they know is an innocent citizen through the legal system then the re-introduction of
The Death Penalty is a mistake
.
The State continues to make serious mistakes from the Invasion of Iraq to the missing sensitive information about its citizens in various incidents. Just to name a few…
Giving ‘The State’ the power to legally execute people is asking for trouble.
As I’ve mentioned previously the relationship between the Crown Prosecution Service & whoever is in Government, run’s the risk of becoming Political instead of Justice being at its core.
I have serious doubts about current politics within the U.K as it seems to me all about ‘creating spin’ with the intention of just grabbing Headlines that scroll at the bottom of Sky or BBC News 24.

This is why the re-introduction of The Death Penalty, should NEVER happen in the United Kingdom. We would give Politicians far too much power that could see our own nation going closer to China.
Another personal belief is that as a society we like simple answers to complicated questions. Maybe this is due to us having to deal with so much information in our daily lives interlinked with the wonderful ‘Target Drive Society’. As a nation if things are going to get better then we need to transform our attitudes / mindsets.
Instead of understandable urge of wanting to see a Man hang for the sexual assault & murder of an innocent Child, shouldn’t we investigate WHY this happens?
Is it just that for the majority that are follow the rules you are always going to have a minority that will break them? How do we help or prevent people breaking the rules?
This is what I believe is the question.
For more information watch the film ‘Minority Report’.
Explains this argument in an more entertaining fashion
.
In the end who do we need protection from the criminals or the people responsible in catching them?
Am not a supporter of any political party – mainstream & smaller.
I just think that at this time Politics is letting the people down.
Its time to ‘get real’ yet this doesn’t mean easy solutions to complicated issues in all issues within our Society.
As the Buddhists say: ‘Life is Hell & about suffering’.
Therefore the question is how do YOU cope with this suffering?

I hope this made my previous points clear (re-read them & link them together)& its been insightful.
In a ‘nutshell’ be very careful when dealing with Politicians.
As a person I have views on Society that are hard-line & liberal.

Mixing a little two parts which have become apparent in this thread.
To those who are against the death penalty;
If someone like Ian Huntly needed a new kidney and he would die without it and it was found that YOU had the only possible match in the world, would you donate a kidney to Ian Huntley?
While being against the death penalty, I certainly would NOT offer him one of mine, therfore I would be condeming him to death....Tough!!!
Also, while being against the death penalty, I do not see why we should keep the likes of Ian Huntley alive. Its said he wants to commit suicide, I'd give him a noose from his cell ceiling and a rickety stool to go with it (with approbriate safety notices of course, don't want the HSE worried). The say "OK brave boy, if you want to go, bye bye" bet he won't do it.

If it was still British Gas, before privatisation, you would not now be seeing these increases.
Maggie said that competition would lower prices and the rest of Europe would soon privatise their energy supplies.
Guess what? It hasn't and they didn't!!

They have to decide if its "the wrong kind of snow" or "leaves on the line" which will be to blame for late / cancelled trains.
I know what the problem is; no snowplows on the front of trains anymore. Thomas the Tank Engine always gets through after Gordon the big engine has a run at the snow with a sodding great plow.
John.
(only joking Sean)
Yes, but is it another one of the over exaggerated warnings again? Seems to me that these days the Met Office predict horrendous weather, with of course, the warning, "don't venture out unless your journey is absolutely vital" and then you look outside and go "weather? What weather?"
Think the Met Office is in cahoots with Health & Safety these days.

If you look at the Travelodge website you sometimes find special offer rooms at their Walsal hotel. We got a room there for £29 last time we were at Chams, also booked same deal for our next visit. The hotel is only a couple of miles from Chams.
John & Shel
1, ultra clean playrooms
2, interesting layout, ie not just one huge square room
3, the people who go there, make an effort to look smart and sexy
4, staff that are friendly and make sure newbies looked after
5, its got to be within 20 mile of us
Well, we know loads of places that cover 1 tho 4, but still waiting for number 5.
John & Shel
Its also not recommended to have mood setting candles in a no smoking room causing the whole hotel to get evacuated. Especially when there are four people in the room, at 1am, with lots of sex toys on show. redface redface redface

Just as an aside, there has just been a news feature in BBC 6 o'clock news. Apparently Christianity is spreading so fast in China that Christians will soon outnumber Communists. There are some State Approved Christian Churches in China and many others which gather in secret. Tho it did show a factory in China which is producing Bibles in Chinese, 41 million gone out the door so far.

In todays Daily Mirror, Tony Parsons wrote a great article about Tony. Don't know if its available on-line.

I Believe In Father Christmas
by
Greg Lake
Couple of qoutes from a website about Greg;
Lake wrote this as an objection to the commercialism of Christmas. He was concerned that the true spirit of Christmas was being lost in the marketing of the holiday.
" I woke up at dawn and I saw him and through his disguise" He caught his own father putting up the gifts. One does not understand the meaning of Christmas until you grow up and have to be "Father Christmas" or Santa for your kids, or you sacrifice for them, instead of being what is more Christian than that. This song always makes me cry, because I remember the hard times and having no money for gifts, but always somehow getting money and making it. I always told my kids, if you don't believe in Santa, he won't visit. I still believe, too.

See article below for experience of someone wrecking new diesel motor.

That is just an instance of stupidity
No, its an instance of someone reading something on the web / "my mate said" without researching the subject properly.
I stand by what I said earlier, If you have a new design diesel, your asking for big trouble putting anything except diesel fuel in it, without going for a kosher conversion kit.

Quote by Geordiecpl2001
See this website for list of diesels which cannot be converted and costs for buying conversion kits to do the job properly on other cars / vans.

I never said all cars could be converted but a lot more can than cant...

They still have a maximum daily limit they have to adhere to.....
Yes, but they will have accrued days off, rest days etc. Again I stand by may earlier statement, no garages will run out of fuel because of a one day blockade, unless people panic buy.

such a good userbase on this site.....
its time we realised that oil is simply being pumped out of the ground, its finite
how long will it be before we dont have any of this free energy left, WTF will we do then...?
there is a pretty good documentery i watched recently called "a crude awakening", well worth a watch IMO

petrol prices will soon seem trivial...when we are fighting over the stuff eh sad

I'd predict that cars using fuel cells, at a realisic price are only about ten years away. So useage of oil for family travel will decrease.
Power generation can be by neuclear energy or renewables, so oil would be mainly used for heavy transport, ships planes and as a raw material for plastics etc. So maybe at that time oil use will be balanced by new oil finds. Possibly we will be OK for oil until the rising sea levels get us all.......and on that happy note...
John & Shel
Couple of points,
If the protesters are blockading fuel depots for one day that will have no effect on the availablility of fuel at garages, the delivery drivers will just work a bit of OT to make up for it and certainly the garages would have a few days stock anyway......unless everyone goes out and panic buys!!!
If you put any chip shop oil or vegatable oil in a recent design diesel engine, you'll wreck it.
Have you noticed the price of bottled water in the supermarkets? Some of that stuff sells for more than £1 per litre and you can get a very acceptable substitute straight from your tap....how mad is that?
Finally, price of diesel / petrol is nothing compared to printer ink. Can be up to £15 for about 30cc....can't be bothered to work it out, but must be several hundred pounds per litre, so I say stuff the fuel depots everyone picket PC world on Sat!! (Tounge in cheek there)
