Whoaaaa dean.
A fine semantical debate beginning here... bring it on!
English Oxford: Contemptible - adjective: despicable
There is nothing despicable about NF walking away from one political fight to survive another. It was an intelligent well reasoned manoeuvre.
What WAS despicable was the way Bliar sent thousands of Britain's finest young men into a battle he knew would be a lost cause on a lie (WMD hitting the UK in 20 minutes et al) with nothing in the way of proper protection - even rquiring that soldiers buy their own desert boots from ex-army supply shops as pilfering Brown wouldn't fund them (at the same time as telling Parliament and the Country he was) - or vehicles totally unsuited to the terrain and the expectation of being subject to IED's.
And, more recently, the possibility that Geoff (buff) Hoon and Military Commanders being called to account in the ECJ for apparent horrors in Iraq when (teflon) Tony it seems will escape all such scrutiny.
Now, THAT is despicable boink

Interesting to note Nigel wouldn't stand in Newark as a standard MP. He knew his chances of winning an actual by-election were slim to non existent.

Actually, I think it was a mature, measured decision not to stand personally. There is of course a more local candidate standing in the by-election.
I accept NF's position on this as it would detract from his current focus - winning seats (for whatever nefarious reasons) in the EU parliament. The Tories and Labour (isn't working) parties were goading him into standing so it would improve their chances on both fronts (no pun intended).
He's a good tactician and no-one's fool.

that's the whole idea of UKIP.....they ask you what you want...and then say..yep that's what we will do !! they change from area to area...and just tell you what you want to hear !! They know they will never get power, and so its not a real problem...they will never be held to account.
Whilst on immigration subject.....it was interesting to note today, that despite all the talk of a rush of Romanians and Bulgarians coming here, after border restrictions were lifted in Jan.....well figures how actually show 4000 less over here than in last quarter of last year !! So much for the mass immigration UKIP forecast !!!

You're worse than Clegg!
UKIP have never said that. What NF actually said, and consistently so, is that after the border restrictions were lifted whatever number of Romanians and Bulgarians there are have the right to settle elsewhere in Europe but it doesn't mean for one minute that they will take up that right as indeed, British passport holders have a similar right to go there but probably won't (even though their lifestyle may improve as a result).
Oh, and just for the record, I'm not a supporter of any political party in the UK which supports the notion of the UK leaving the EU particularly if it buggers up my tidy little number as a resident of the République Française, thank you very much.
Didn't see the PPB Jed, but confused by your comments.
Aren't the up and coming elections the European Elections?
In which event your comment about the effect local councillors have seems out of place - particularly if he was doing no more than supporting his Party's list or indeed, standing for the Europeen Parliament himself...

So you regard house insurance as a luxury yet you have outside cameras, lights on timers and have erected an 8 foot high fence all around the rear of your house dunno

You missed off the armed guard in bright red tunics bayonets fixed with bearskin hats and the machine gun turrets, Max :lol2:

Have to say as another 'Returnee' I did smile at remembering most of the names mentioned....
There was a 'guest appearance' from the Sarge not so long ago... he was having a great time down under.

They have no assets and would dispose of anything they do have to family on paper as soon as the was issued.
I would claim on my house insurance if I could have afforded some but my income doesn't run to luxuries

I would regard house insurance as a necessity rather than a luxury. Luxuries to me would be membership of swinging clubs and cigarettes. Each to their own.
I agre with Max.
Isn't it a damning part of society today that one has to rely on paying one set of thieves to offer 'protection' against another set.
Line of least resistance always....
The jails are full of scroats to bursting point, so any excuse to move on which doesn't affect their pay, what the hell.
Just the way it is Jed. If you got loads of dosh, bring a private prosecution by all means but you know how that will end up already
Tony Martin had the best idea 10 years ago but even he has had to concede defeat in a recent re-run of events.
You can't beat the system. The lunatics have been handed the keys to Britain. Will the last person to leave turn the lights out please (if anyone can still afford 6d for the meter, that is).

What annoys me the most is that I am just one of thousands of victims a day in the UK who are then further attacked, firstly by home office directives "advising" Magistrates and Judges to keep as many criminals as possible out of Jail because of overcrowding and therefore only locking up those that they have to, and secondly by blood sucking Defence Lawyers and Barristers who advise their clients (repeat offending scum) .... "your case is hopeless and you will be found guilty the evidence against you is overwhelming but do not plead guilty because on the day of the trial you will be offered a plea bargain/lesser charge in order to save the case going to trial"
A defence lawyer or barrister should be making sure his client gets a fair trial not showing them loopholes or how to get away with crimes they have committed, albeit most repeat offenders are now well aware of this tactic.
I even got a call from the Police saying that the defence lawyers wanted to come into my home and take paint scrapings from each room in an attempt to make the jury believe that the hammer they had been found with in the car was mine not the defendents, kinda silly really because would that not be stolen goods if the paint marks showed they had a hammer that belonged to me smile but I suppose they were going along the line of burglary v aggravated burglary the latter being when the criminals take weapons with them into the burglary, standard burglary carries a far less maximum sentence than the 14 years for aggravated burglary.
I of course told them to piss off my home had already been invaded once and they were not going to invade it again.

Which is probably why the prosecution offered no evidence on the burglary charges; the perpetrators human rights to a fair trial were being compromised...

... and if the press had kept their noses clean by not hacking Millie Dowler's mobile (and other such diabolical things) perhaps there would not have been a need for Leveson or ultimately Maria Millar to steer legislation through Parliament to control their actions rolleyes

The printed media is out of control and has a self-belief that it is there to dish it out but not receive it. So when Leveson hung all their dirty washing out in public, and they failed to drag any Ministers in the process they just said 'Sod You' when Parliament (who we elect) told them how they would be regulated. And years later there is STILL no regulation. So Maria Miller was fair game as they knew there would be no comeback.
The answer is simple. Just stop buying newspapers, they go bust and its sorted.
But what will the working classes wipe their arses on during tea breaks Chish :lol2:

Certainly not Maria Miller

Now, call me a cynic....
Maria Miller has been tucked up by the media just like Andrew Mitchell was by the corrupt Police Federation.
Ms Miller had the unenviable task of implementing the Government's policy on media control in the wake of the Leveson enquiry which will place controls on the way these unelected dictators of the 'art' of spouting half-truths to a gullible nation will operate in the future.
It is a tragedy that her career has been ended in this way.
The press is all too powerful and unashamedly distort the truth for their own nefarious purposes. That they have scored a hit on this occasion is dreadful and I sincerely hope that her replacement - tipped for even higher Office - will strengthen the resolve to bring these dreadful people to account.
It's a bad day for democracy.
I have seen the most inane drivel and outraged posturing on so many forums about this woman and here, for the first time is something that I agree with about this issue.
If she, and the other MP's kept their snouts out of the trough, didn't claim for every minute and ridiculous thing that no normal business could claim for- while bleating on about austerity and 'we're all in it together' while fucking the entire country over in numerous ways- then maybe the press would have nothing to pull her up about

"and then stick two fingers up at the EU if they try to overrule it. "
It's a myth that the EU demands people stay if they break the laws of the host Country.
It's just not true.
If you disrespect the laws of your host country, you can be deported - it is written!
France have done this twice now in recent times with the Roma. Once under the rule of President Sarkozy and more recently under Mr Flanby.

I think you'll find that many times in the past, those who should have been deported, like the Italian lad who stabbed the Headteacher to death, get a judgement from the Court of Human rights that they must stay in this Country. That's who would get the two fingered salute !!
John
He who hesitates is lost...
Get shot of them before the ECHR has a chance to meddle.. besides, all the EC can do is impose a fine. Just add it to the long list of the other unpaid ones wink

An Apple a day keeps the bugs/patches/updates away....

Erm sorry missus, but my iPad gets loads of app bugfix updates every day, and a new OS about twice a month at the moment! flipa
*takes Cubes Apology and stores it for a later date*
Allow me.. *clears throat*
Firstly, the vast majority of iPad app updates are via the App (not to be confused with Apple) developer (third party) so not really Apple updates are they eh? *poke*
Secondly (nose in air, little finger sticking out) iPad is ios so not the Apple Desktop Os of the current Mavericks (osx 10.9) flavour where stability for the most part rules. While it is conceded Mavericks along with it's predecessors SnowLeopard/Mountain Lion has an amount of bug fixes/updates marched out occasionally it is nowhere near the bajillion or so the likes of Windoze churns out to it's fading fan base.
Thirdly and perhaps the most important point is that you are a SH Moderator & should know better than to besmirch the good name of the Apple at the same time as flipping me the bird particularly when blathering on about your irritations of the iPad. I've been left with no choice but to consider reporting your profile (insert a disgusted look here)

Linux?

which version / distribution ?
last time I checked over 50 different distributions/versions and that's before you start on the Koppix or others. Therefore suggest if people still on XP they'll probably prefer a Windows version rather than having to learn Linux and how to configure, hunt for drivers, etc.
Ubuntu on my old creaking XP machine

When can we expect English football to be played by English players and managed by English Managers?
And will the game benefit from that?
At least one might be able to understand wtf they say (or will that be a bad thing?)

I didn't invest but I'm not crying over it. It just seems to be a typically English jealous reaction to someone else having the gumption to make a few bob quite legally by people who missed the boat.

It's nothing to do with making money, it's how much we as the British Tax payer lost out (or maybe it's 'sold out' due to the seemingly incompetent Business secretary seriously undervaluing a company prior to offering it for sale. Who made money on the sale is secondary.
It's everything to do with making money on a personal front.
How much extra would have been made if it was valued (if it was possible to value) higher? Always easy to be wise after the event.
I sold a car for 3,500€ recently. Someone came along after and said they would have given me 5,000€ Yeah. cushty but a bird in the hand is always worth two in the bush. At least it was a done deal whilst the other dreamer came up with a plan how to short change me and with a possible consequence of losing the deal altogether.
And what difference would that have made to the average tax payer?
Diddley Squat, that's what. In basic terms, HMG would only have pissed it up the wall rolleyes
Surely, it's every man for himself in the cut-throat world of high finance?
If you didn't invest and didn't benefit from the sale of the century, little point in lambasting everyone else about it. You can't change what is done.

As for Vince Cable... well, he should have been strangled at birth like all Liberals.
I think France played better without Dusantoir as captain, to be honest.
Perhaps his untimely injury just before the tournament playing for Toulouse was a mixed blessing....
