The Cams - available in three sizes and detachable. (The old chat equiv is 'small cam')
How are detachable cams superior to multiple room windows though? Nobody ever moaned about not having enough windows when the facility was available, but the did moan when the ability to have a multiple chat window instance was messed with from time to time, doh.
The 'quality' of the new cams are far superior to the old chatroom. The ability to detach them and put them where you want them (if you so wish) is a nice addition over the old fixed ones. Multiple room access has nothing to do with it, that's a whole different question. And yes, we miss the ability to be in more than one room at a time.
Four sizes of text helpful for those with a sight problem. (the old chat equiv is 'small font')
But don't most browsers have a zoom function though? Either way, I have no recollection of anyone ever moaning about chatroom text size over the many years I have been here; I'm not saying it isnt a valid concern, I am however saying I don't EVER recall it being an issue.
True, it's a personal preference but those who need it now have it to use (if they so wish).
The increase in the room size to allow more people into popular rooms. (old site limit 70, new site limit (currently set @ 100).
Yeah, granted, thats nice, however many of the old rooms (that frequently had 70 members such as the cd/tv room) now seem to have have bugger all members in them... cant think why though?
That's really a question you have to ask of the members who created those rooms its got nothing to do with the 'superiority' - The superiority is that you can have 30 more people in the room.
Oh and, the way the new chatroom populates the user list in each room means that said chat software becomes overburdened with 50 users in a room, much less 70 or 100.
Not had that problem myself, have you raised a support ticket so they can see what your problem is?
New software allows quicker development of 'new' functions.
I cannot claim to have ever performed a review of the old chat software vs the new; however, as you seem to have this knowledge, can you please enlighten us vis a vis the chat platforms that were being used vs the chat platforms that are now being used? in order an objective comparrison can be made?
The old chatroom software was completely based on Adobe Flash and was over 5 years old (ancient in IT lifespans). As Elliot has put it in another thread it was becoming a nightmare to support and add the kind of functions the members were asking for.
The new chat is based on Javascript/XMMP Jabber (Flash remains only for the cams) and runs on XenVM (if I remember correctly), which is the current standard adopted by numerous other sites for chat systems.
The bottom line here is that nothing is perfect. Yes the old chatroom did have the odd issue, however I think you will find that most folks raising support issues about the old chatroom were doing so over peripheral issues.
Today the number of possible permutations of Operating systems, browsers and security software being used means that nothing is ever going to be perfect 1st time out - it's simply impossible to test every combination.
Conversely the gripes being aired about the new chatroom seem to stem from a fundamental dislike of the new software, a dislike that is causing long standing members such as wakeycouple et al to chime in, not on account of them being 'ludites' or other nonsense, but rather on account that they feel the site has taken a step back.
A lot of the 'gripes' could have been solved had people taken a few minutes to read the help screen or view the help tutorials in the Support Centre or even read through some of the forum posts for answers. It seems that some may not like 'this or that function' and that is their prerogative, some do like it, and feel it's a step forward and that is their prerogative also.
I mean, is the Yorkswongers room even on the new chat or is that another room that has taken a nose dive?
I've seen it there a few times. But probably best to ask the room host why it's not showing everyday. Alternatively, you could start the room yourself....
To end:
No, it's not perfect yet and some things could have been done/handled better (hindsight is a wonderful tool). We've suffered from many of the issues that have arisen over the past few weeks (cams crashing, disconnections etc) and yes they are frustrating at the least. One hopes that it will settle down quickly and the remaining issues resolved by Elliot and the team at SH. The way to move forward is to provide constructive not destructive feedback to improve the site and offer solutions to individual dislikes or the 'why' behind what doesn't work for you. That's all we do, and it has always had a positive response from the folks at SH Towers.
